Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

No idea how this would work in practice but some sort of pattern recognition for what might be a drop of water on the phone screen as opposed to a touch input.

I like how the comments just assume you're scrolling SM or texting people in the shower but I think it would be rad to not be worried about getting my phone wet so I could use it to listen to music in there. The only other option is to turn voice commands on and start shouting at it over the sound of the shower.

Or even, like, using the thing outside in the rain.

You can get waterproof Bluetooth speakers that are designed to go in the shower for less than £10 in the UK. The sound quality isn't amazing, but they're not much different from a phone speaker, especially with the sound of the water 👍

I have a JBL Clip 3 I use in the bathroom when I shower. Sound quality's pretty good but I just listen to podcasts with it rather than music.

Struggling to see how it's different from watching tv while you iron or listen to music while cooking

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 hours ago (2 children)

I listen to music in the shower, I'm not sure why this would involve taking the phone into the water?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago) (1 children)

Even just reaching out to touch it while I am wet will make the phone wet. It doesn't even have to come in with me.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 hours ago

Okay, it's never occurred to me to do that, fair enough.

I just set a playlist going

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 hours ago

So I don't have to have the music so loud

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 hours ago

Seriously, everyone jumping to the worst possible interpretation, like they've never wanted to listen to music or had an audio book they didn't want to put down.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Like...in the water? Did you mean a water shower?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Nah the other kind of shower mate

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 hour ago

Meteor or golden? I hate to nag, but the preparations of either one differ a little.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Holy shit! Can't you people put down your phone for 15 goddamn minutes?! Just allow yourself to hear your own thoughts without an algorithm leading you.

FIFTEEN MINUTES!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 21 hours ago

Do you get angry at everything other people do or is this just projection?

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Showering so boring these days, I need to doomscroll.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 19 hours ago

Reason why I listen to music. So relaxing having a hot shower witg a nice tune :)

[–] [email protected] 40 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Are you seriously using your phone in the shower? Is that a thing people do?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago

I do turn on some music occasionally, and I keep the screen visible to be able to tell the time. But I don't touch it often while showering, only to reactivate the AOD if it turns off for it not being light enough in the bathroom for its taste.

It's an emotional decision not a rational one I admit

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Mfers will use their phone daily in the bathroom but the second you step in the shower it's a crime against humanity

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago) (1 children)

Well, science, kinda yeah. It is a crime against science.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 hours ago

I think you have a poor grasp of the scientific process

[–] [email protected] 24 points 1 day ago (6 children)

Mfers will use their phone daily on the side of the pool but the second you toss it in the deep end it's a crime against humanity

Finally, a shower thought about showers

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 day ago

Anyone not able to Livestream themselves in the shower on request from the mods should be banned

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago

OnePlus did something like this, can't speak about the effectiveness though

Fyi even if your phone is water resistant that doesn't mean it's steam resistant

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

Good thing the phone is going to be cold enough to cause condensation then eh

wait you take it IN the shower? not just off to the side on the toilet to skip songs or something?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 hours ago

I always bring my phone into the shower, to skip songs if needed or to answer it, if client calls. Been doing that for years, phone is 5 years old, still works fine.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

If i were you I'd put it in a ziplock bag for use in the shower

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago

I think you're overestimating the risk

How about instead of that we tackle the problem by the source? Taking showers is so last century.

Dry cleaning for humans. Boom! Problem solved!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

Hmmmm I still think this problem would persist with non water liquids

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I bought a waterproof WiFi speaker for the shower. I listen to a podcast while I shower and my phone sits on the counter far from water. As soon as I get dry, I switch back to earbuds. Works great.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

Watched my first YouTube video in the shower the other day, it was about the afd party in Germany. Very informative I didn't know just how far right wing they were since I don't speak German and don't know a lot about their politics.

hop in your washer an dryer with clothes 2 birds 1 stone and your phone scrolls itself from the spinning

We would've never gotten to the moon with this attitude

I think technologically this is something an engineering team should tackle. It would probably benefit people who use touch devices for work in dirty and wet environments as well.

How long do you spend in the shower that you have time to doom scroll? Maybe it's time to switch to baths if you have a tub. If you don't, I would boringly suggest just not taking the phone into the shower if you know that the touch sensor will be wonky. It may speed up the shower and lessen your water consumption as a side effect. That's good for your wallet and the environment. The internet can wait 5-10.

I get the meditative effect of a hot shower after a long day. I enjoy that on occasion as well. At no point did I ever think the experience would be improved by a cell phone with a camera being present.

Some phones do try to detect water droplets

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago

Ugh It technically is a thing but it sucks...somehow ads get opened when my finger is hovering but refuses things I touch when I press specific links, or try to move that stupid magnifying window to copy a sentence.

But yes, would be amazing
