RULES (updated 01/22/25)

  1. Be respectful: no harassment, hate speech, bigotry, and/or trolling. To be concise, disrespect is defined by escalation.
  2. Encourage conversation in your OP. This means including heavily implicative subject matter when you can and also engaging in your thread when possible. You won't be punished for trying.
  3. Avoid controversial topics (politics or societal debates come to mind, though we are not saying not to talk about anything that resembles these). There's a guide in the protocol book offered as a mod model that can be used for that; it's vague until you realize it was made for things like the rule in question. At least four purple answers must apply to a "controversial" message for it to be allowed.
  4. Keep it clean and SFW: No illegal content or anything gross and inappropriate. A rule of thumb is if a recording of a conversation put on another platform would get someone a COPPA violation response, that exact exchange should be avoided when possible.
  5. No solicitation such as ads, promotional content, spam, surveys etc. The chart redirected to above applies to spam material as well, which is one of the reasons its wording is vague, as it applies to a few things. Again, a "spammy" message must be applicable to four purple answers before it's allowed.
  6. Respect privacy as well as truth: Don’t ask for or share any personal information or slander anyone. A rule of thumb is if something is enough info to go by that it "would be a copyright violation if the info was art" as another group put it, or that it alone can be used to narrow someone down to 150 physical humans (Dunbar's Number) or less, it's considered an excess breach of privacy. Slander is defined by intentional utilitarian misguidance at the expense (positive or negative) of a sentient entity. This often links back to or mixes with rule one, which implies, for example, that even something that is true can still amount to what slander is trying to achieve, and that will be looked down upon.

I feel you, brother

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 day ago (3 children)

I'm not even sure anymore really. The only thing that comes to mind at the moment is crazy drugs and sex day before I blow my brains out. I've seen a couple stories about people realizing life really is worth living after a binge like that, and it has me wondering if that would really work for me haha

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I also have that exact story. Got a bunch of drugs, hired a prostitute. After she left, took a crazy concoction I thought for sure would kill me. I'll never forget what I thought was my last breath. All I could feel was immense regret. My brain kept reminding me of all the little things I had to live for that for some reason I couldn't think of at any moment before. I woke up the next day feeling like death, but I've never felt better to be alive. 7 years later and I remember it all like it was yesterday. I would never recommend anyone to go to that length to feel something, but I understand why it happens. Unfortunately too many people take that final breath and don't wake back up. Find a good therapist to talk to. If that's not an option then a family member or friend. The people who share that story all got lucky to a degree. If you don't feel you have anyone if your life to reach out to, feel free to reach out to me or any trusted community you find on the internet. It may seem silly to talk to a complete stranger on the internet in that way, but there are an overwhelming number of real people here and not just bots lol.

Too little spare money to save much. After clearing my current debt the next item will be a chair, new curtains, then a refrigerator. Ideally.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago

I hear you.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Everything. New phone, new laptop, more clothes, more bling. Piercings. Despite always wanting I've made it through life without any tattoos so far (which I'm also kinda glad about because I'm pretty sure I would have something edgy and cringy if I'd done it when I was younger). So, tattoos. Decent healthcare, dental care, mental care.

Also, I lied. I'm not actually saving up money for anything right now. But if I had money that could be saved up, these are things that I would be saving up for right now lol.

Edit: actually real answer, enough money to do some sort of course or diploma and aim for something better in life.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm in my 40s only just started getting tattoos now I'm obsessed. What would you get done? And what diploma would you do?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Btw, sorry that I can never answer anything without waffling on lol. This is why I suck at Twitter and Bluesky. And I don't talk this much in real life. So feel free to not even read, clearly I'm on some sort of high right now.

It definitely seems like getting tattoos is addictive. I still haven't got as far as the 'what' yet myself. I want it to have some sort of small meaning but not be pretentious either. So some object / animal / creature that looks cool but I can also have some reason for, even if only I know the reason. The only thing I know for sure is that I've always wanted henna style tattoos on my hands ever since I was a kid drawing on my hands with a pen in school lol. But that would probably make me even more unemployable, so education first.

But as for an education, either something writing related or programming related. My main goal is something without a dress code or someone breathing down my neck. Preferably WFH. I don't need to be rich, just more than surviving and happy. Writing would be the more 'laid back' route for me, my writing has become feral over the years but it was the thing in school that I could get As for with my eyes closed.

Programming would be the route with harder work and probably involve doing jobs that don't thrill me as much as writing. But it would also help for my art because I start making games in my spare time and exercise the writing, drawing (pixel art) and music making part of my soul at the same time.

Also, by all accounts, teaching English as a foreign language sounds like it nets a decent but humble little income too. And would also be fairly laid back and allow time for side projects.

Uh, basically the story of my life is being undecided about what I really want to do with myself.

Your tattoo idea is really sensible, really solid idea. Main thing I'll say is save the money to do it right 100% worth it.

Funnily enough my friends a programmer even though she's good at writing! She's wfh on a really good wage even though she only started it a few years ago

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I didn't ask about yours but I did see lurking (and upvoting) in women's stuff that you got a unicorn! I think a mythical / fantasy creature is an awesome idea. And I'm assuming that's your start?

Also, to avoid another double reply, jokes about the USA aside, hope you have a great time there.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yep a unicorn! I've got 5 now I think the unicorn might be my favourite. I'm not allowed another one for a year cos 5 in 2 years is excessive (making up for lost time)

And thanks mate sure I will

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

making up for lost time

I deeply and spiritually identify with this statement right now. Me too, or at least I aim to. I'm glad to hear that you're choosing to feed your soul and I hope that each one of those tatts makes you feel more like you.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Thank you so much for that, a few people have been weird about how many I've got in such a short time. They really do make me feel more like me

[–] [email protected] 2 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Honestly, if you dig tattoos and have the money to spend on them, why not? A friend of mine also got a bunch of tattoos in a really short time, probably also like 4-5 within a year or so, and has been very happy with them. Tattoos are for your enjoyment first and foremost, so who's to tell you when you've had enough?

I just got my second one back in November and am really happy with it. Already brainstorming ideas for new ones. Really does feel like once you've started, there's no stopping. But money's always an issue for as long as my apprenticeship is going on

[–] [email protected] 1 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Ha that's true! I hope your future is filled with inking that brings you lots of joy

[–] [email protected] 2 points 9 hours ago

you too, thanks 💜

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 day ago

A house. Kinda feel like I cannot buy anything I don't strictly need because of this.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Car tires. Literally.

Also funds to fix my car if it breaks down.

I'm fucking owned by my car I need to go to work in this god forsaken country with no public transport.

Let me know if you want any self-repair advice.

I plan to move abroad, so that.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Hoping to get my driving license, London and public transport didn't give me a need to drive despite knowing how to (shh), and at my age it could be a great benefit moving forward so I figure a small refresher and the exam will do me good.

Also been saving up, separately, for an upcoming holiday to the Netherlands. My mother's health can take a turn any day, so I wanted to take her to my favourite part of the world while I still could. Got a few things planned.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 23 hours ago

Good luck with your exam!

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 day ago (8 children)

So probably mostly for retirement. The problem is that I've been moving between counties and studying and doing stuff so I'm afraid it will be impossible to collect it from all the countries together so that I can get a normal pension, so I will have to work quite long and yeah if I'm lucky and get old then I'll be probably very poor.

No clue tbh, I've kinda reached all my savings goals. Can buy a house outright when the time comes to settle down (not so easy, not even sure about the country let alone cityat this point), and still got enough to live a relaxed life. Guess I'll just top up the retirement fund.

Windows for my house. I'll be saving for a while..

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Have you thought about moving to a house with Linux?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's funny you say that. I have a home lab that runs Linux already.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 22 hours ago

Saving up for a down payment on a house. It feels so daunting!

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago

I'm going on my first trip with my girlfriend and I'm saving up for a stay in the mountains. We both love hiking, so I think everything will work out.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 23 hours ago

My recent bigger purchase was a video game, so probably a different video game somewhere down the line. I'm trying not to spend too much money right now unless it's money I've gotten from donating plasma. Kind of like pocket money for small stuff.

Other than that, I've got all I need right now, pretty much

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago

To finish med school. Got about a year left, and i'm sort of broke. I'm getting by. Everyone talks how i'll have cash later on but damn i'm broke now.

I'm dreaming about a new tent for camping, a car, and to buy more expensive food.
