F-em. Late 2014 Mac mini plex server (also running all the 'arrs) still going strong. I'm not buying a new one until it shorts out and dies.

I have a Black Mac Mini as my primary desktop device. It has always been flakey.

When I tried to trade it in on an M1 MacMini, they didn’t even offer me a Gift Card!?

I’m currently in the process of migrating everything to Linux, where possible.

Homer Simpson: “Ooo! A new community to subscribe to.”

(Things would have to get way worse than they already for me to drop Apple as a platform. But I’ve already canceled every subscription I had with them over Hong Kong & Trump. I’ll buy used for the rest of my life if I have to.)

Thank you for reducing your reliance on them. Every step away from Apple is progress that should be applauded.

The iPhone is the hardest to replace as Linux phones won’t be good until 2029.

The amount of investment into the alternatives quadruples after the developers fix all these issues:

5G

VolTE

GPS

E-Sim

Lack of apps

RCS

2015 i7 MacBook Pro, still purring like a kitten.

Pretty sure they'll run linux just fine

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 weeks ago

Can confirm they do

Can confirm, Intel minis run Linux just fine.

What distro are you using? Every one I've tried on my 2017 iMac I've run into driver issues.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 weeks ago

I don't currently own any Apple hardware, I was just speculating

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The Mac minis don't really have that problem.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Okay but...I don't have a Mac Mini?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Right, macbooks and imacs have far more trouble with drivers than the minis do. That's what I was saying. His distro might not be helpful, as he was using a mini and not a macbook or imac.

Oh I see. Good to know.

Since these products are now considered vintage, Apple no longer guarantees that parts for repairs will be readily available.

Since when does Apple supply repair parts?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Apple supplies parts to authorized service partners.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 weeks ago

Right, but they can't sell them.

Vintage: “Apple stopped distributing them for sale more than 5

Feels like just yesterday I bought this thing. That said I'm tired of this POS being so slow, I just can't justify buying a Mac Studio Yet.

Why? Nothing else comes close in terms of overall experience.

It's efficient, quiet, fast, and I prefer Mac OS over Windows and Linux for my use case.

Honestly the new base mini is a good buy. Until fairly recently in the Mac timeline, the minis had slow hard drives holding them back.

I hate to break it to you, but that was 7 years ago. Unless like 2.8gbps read and 1.6 write is considered slow by 2018 standards.
