Note for the other Americans: This is is the look that the Klan co-opted, because racists love co-opting existing symbols.

I didn't know where else on the fediverse - lemmy to post this

This is Semana Santa (Holy Week) in the southern city of Malaga Spain. They conduct mass religious processions throughout the city for the entire week starting from Palm Sunday all the way to Easter Sunday with the biggest, largest, noisiest events happening on Good Friday.

There are over 40 brotherhoods that host major processions that include marchers carrying iconic images from the passion of Christ biblical stories. They come in a variety of colours including these guys in white tunics and white hoods .... a traditional style that has been used for hundreds of years before it was popularized by others in our modern times.

For the record, I'm not the religious Christian type ... I'm probably more atheist than anything ... I just enjoy watching this because I was in Malaga three times to see this annual event during my holidays many years ago. It's an amazing event to see.

To me it's the best of Europe ... in the winter it's the warmest place in Europe, especially on the Mediterranean side ... things aren't too expensive and the people are nice. Plus you can fly out from there to visit every part of Europe for cheap and even visit Morocco if want.

We spent about 6 or 7 winters there years ago in Malaga, and throughout Andalusia and three times we got to stay in Malaga during Holy Week and it was amazing. It was neat to see the changes over the years. We saw it just before they changed over to the Euro and things were a lot more rustic and rough around the edges. Now they've cleaned everything up to make it look a little Disneyesque but it's still a beautiful city.

The region hosts live events covering the entire week's events this time of year. I enjoy watching them with my friends as we saw them years ago and now it's become a sort of tradition for us. We don't watch the whole thing ... we just view them on and off all week and it makes it feel like we are there again.
