DM Spam (lemmy.blahaj.zone)
submitted 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

The wonderful @[email protected] has developed a script to help deal with DM spam.

With this script, when a user is permabanned, DMs sent from the account in the previous 24 hours will automatically be marked as deleted.

We have set the time to 24 hours to ensure that the majority of pre-existing (non spam) DMs are preserved in the event of an account being banned. That being said, if you lose a DM to this script that you need recovered, please reach out to myself or Kaity, and we can restore it manually for you!

what was the point of nicole? to show that the fediverse wasn't ready for a low harm bad actor?

Phew. I've felt dreadful looking into my inbox lately, because I really don't want to see the gore image.

I wonder if we could get an option in account settings to restrict who can DM you. Like the options could be everyone, nobody, and a setting where someone can send you a request but not any images unless you accept the request. I think that this would be a good feature if this kind of spam gets more common, and prevent things like unsolicted nudes or gore.

That will have to come from the lemmy devs. I'm hoping that they're working on something like that given the scale of the issue, but not being involved with the lemmy dev team, I don't know what the plans are

Lemmy 0.19.11 disables picture rendering in DMs

Dont render images in private message (#3043)

That's part way there, but it doesn't stop the text DM spam, nor does it actually remove the NSFL content

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Indeed, but at least it's an improvement

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago

That is very true!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I have received an image in my dms from PD 0.19.5

That’s fabulous news!

Those poor dungeon masters

I'm just trying to play a game 😭

Speaking of which, is there any way to delete DMs in Voyager? The only options I see are user info, or block.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

No, deleting DMs is a mod thing. In this case, we're doing it directly from the database

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I never realized how easy that would be to abuse. I’m really surprised Lemmy doesn’t have an option to let users delete DMs

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 week ago

I'm hoping that it's in the works

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 week ago

I don't know if it is still true but I was told this is a Lemmy thing and that only admins could delete DMs.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 week ago

Thank you Kaity <3

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 week ago

Thank you for that ^w^

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago (2 children)

meh. I would prefer just deleting archiving and having various views for myself.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 week ago

Since you’re on piefed it won’t affect you

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Understood, but at the moment, you can't even do that because you can't delete DMs through the user interface or set controls on who can send you DMs. Until we get options in lemmy that let people take control of their own approach to spam DMs, this is the best we can do, because unfortunately, "do nothing" just means spam impacts everyone, and given the nature of some of that spam, that's not an option.

Edit - I just noticed you're not a blahaj lemmy user, so this won't impact you in any way. It's specific to users of this instance

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Does anyone know why I can't report the dms? I just got one and it said "couldn't create report". The user wasn't banned yet, I checked the profile.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago

Something is broken with reporting DMs. I'm hoping it will be fixed when we upgrade. If not, we'll have to go digging to see what's causing the problem
