If he was 100% honest with each of his sons it would have never happened. He is bound by his own doing.

The Master, well, tried to take over the world with sterile mutants thinking they'd become the dominant race. (i dont remember if he actually knew that himself though)

He didn't, and to his credit, he does blow himself up if he finds out they're sterile.
