Playing an instrument. Not on stage for others but at home all by myself just for myself. :)

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Same here, also piano! I improvise a lot, just for fun. I don’t hear this as often from people playing other instruments. Great outlet

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Same. Piano here.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Thats cool, what instrument and do you write your own music?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Piano as well. I don't write my own music, but love to play with the old ones like playing really fast or slow or loud or .... sadly I am not of good in improvising on the piano but with singing its fine.

Edit: typo

Coding cuz it's interactive and it allows for generating a lot of detail.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

First I've heard of coding being regarded as a creative medium but I get it and I like it!

What's your biggest or best project been?

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

And biggest project is like a massive process that I make pictures of, like of the debug output that helps me make it. It's about nature embracing every space it can live in, including digital space.

And best? Well I get a lot of positive reactions for pussy mirror, which is a collab with someone else. It's AR and it's a bunch of cats that mirror the audience, like on a screen or wall by projector. It's not my favorite but it's engaging for all audiences of all ages and cultures. I love to creep people out by talking about the neural net used for visual detection.

If you're a bit technical you can try it out. Install a beginner IDE like Process and try to draw a tree using an L system. Maybe it's accessible via Python too with a library that allows you to open a window and draw some lines and colors.

I swear I'm normal, but pussy mirror startled me there. That does sound like a cool project tho!

BTW I've edited the post and added a pic.

Startled you in what way?

On the internet, those words rarely have a sfw meaning.

Well, the innuendo is on purpose. It was our working title and it stuck.

I'm gonna say coding as well. You can do all kinds of stuff. From programming a little robot that runs across your house, to more elaborate projects with proper soldering and engineering. Or you design a game, come up with an entire world inside your computer screen. Maybe with physics that work unlike we know from the real world. Many people also use coding to solve the small problems of their lives. Sometimes bigger ones. Write a website to connect people. Sell used stuff in the neighborhood...

The process itself is creative, too. At least for most of the part. Some amount is boring, hard work, too. I think I can admit that.

Planning and running my homebrew ttrpg campaign. I've sunk nearly three years into fleshing out my setting from plate tectonics to modern geopolitics!

You need an artificer?!

You sound like a good dm.

Arguing with strangers on the internet.

Seriously though I've never been good at anything artistic. I'm a programmer by trade and occasional dabble in the odd personal project lately, and I have a lot of hobbies. I experiment with electronics, I'm an (really really) amateur blacksmith. I feel like those engage the parts of my brain art might, but I don't feel like they're any sort of self expression. They're more academic pursuits, I do them to learn and learning itself is kinda the end goal.

To be honest I'm not sure I know what "expressing myself" in an artistic sense would be. I use words to convey my thoughts and emotions but I'm certainly no writer.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Thats all good! You don't need to write like Nabakov to enjoy expressimg yourself, any medium in whatever skill level you can that scratches the creative itch is a good medium.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I think you’re doing pretty good at expressing yourself

Started using an AI art generator. Its great fun and can get some interesting results..

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Oooooh you're gonna get flack for that. I think that can still be used to get your creative juices flowing or atleast bring the image in your head to a first draft.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Ah well, Correct you can upload an image of your own.

Video game assets/customizing :) I used VRChat as an excuse to design a persona (in my pfp) and I made a game prototype to pay homage to my first car. I wanna do way more stuff but I'm still learning

Writing or making beats for fun.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Writing, for sure

I love painting miniatures. I like to find or create a vibe in the sculpt and follow that to the best of my abilities. I'm a software developer so I already expend a lot of creativity in at work but there's a degree of freedom in it that I miss otherwise. I just like making stuff.

I write and record/program music, often by myself but sometimes with others. I never release any of it though. Last release I did was in 2014 but it wasn't my music. I was just the drummer for my friend who doesn't play drums.

Doodling on a tablet with Clip Studio is amazingly good, it has all the layers and features of a full blown illustrator clone

Cooking. It gives me a chance to be creative, plus I need to do it multiple times a day. Also, you get to share the fruits of your labor with friends/ family. Definitely helps that I don't have any friends who are picky eaters.

Yesss cooking is an underrated creative endeavour!
