trans surgeries being a separate comm makes sense, but would DIY need to be its own comm? /c/transenby_liberation is pretty dead these days because of /c/traa and the mega, maybe DIY could be folded into that to revitalize it and then put a link to DIY resources in the sidebar of every trans comm?

I really think DIY is a niche topic with a lot of information and shouldn’t just be mixed in a general purpose trans sub.
People go for the technical information and discussion about life saving care not everybody needs or wants. They don’t generally want it to be mixed with memes or random trans discourse, politics, or community infighting unless it really has to happen
It’s similar to transgender surgeries if anything if you’re gonna mix them mix DIY with surgeries
Another thing is that transgender surgeries might be best served by transbucket. We could just backup reddit content and make a DIY comm

If the subreddit does actually get taken down it would be very easy for me to spread word around via some of the uk subreddits that have leftists. The main subreddits are a problem but the location based UK subs and some of the minor side subreddits have good relations or crossover mods with the greenandpleasant team.
Mentioning this because I know how that diy sub has tonnes of UK users.

I don't think I have any specific sway with the transdiy team unfortunately, it's a very small team with very little connection to other modteams, maybe they would be receptive though? I don't know.
The surgery subreddit was mega important to me whenever I was going through bottom surgery all that time ago. I never had to go through with DIY so I can’t speak to that. They are both huge resources that there should definitely be an attempt to recreate here. These are importantly resources that definitely should be saved. I’d also be willing to mod surgeries, but not DIY as I have no idea.
I also believe they should both be separate comms for the reason that it’d keep the information together and easily accessible. That’s important for googling information imo.
I think for DIY, a well maintained wiki would be the best option. People can ask for DIY help in the comm, but the wiki should be pinned in every trans comm imo, and we should try to update it regularly as new information becomes available.

i’m new here, but coming from the subreddit. i’d be very down to mod transdiy. i can’t be super hands on but diy is my autistic special interest and id love to help build the wiki and try to keep the whole thing exceptionally high quality.
edit: someone really needs to pull the trigger on this, either here or elsewhere. it’s unfortunate the mods on reddit aren’t participating, but they already have enough on their plates. these communities have to get built now so they’re ready when we need them.
side note, wondering about the stability of hexbear or the blahja lemmy server. there was a small diy community in kbin i believe but it appears kbin is not a thing anymore. —- we’d want to build a community in a place where we can be confident about the stability of the servers.
Sorry for the intrusion, is there a good reference for diy? I do know my trans friends are doing diy in some instances but if someone asks for help, is there a place I can direct them?

I am wholely ignorant, but I am apprehensive to the idea that we'd be giving medical advice to one another. It seems like an avenue in which someone could get hurt. Is there some way to avoid that in a DIY comm?
DIYing medical care is often less harmful than not getting any medical care at all!
Or getting medical care from uninformed “professionals” who don’t care enough to learn ~~and casually prescribe you 50 mg/day cyproterone acetate~~.

Also still happens with roughly half of German endos who treat trans people in the first place. Some of the handful of competent ones here have literally thousands of trans patients bc the situation is so shit.
My endo was the only endo in the entire country that would treat trans people and they didn’t know shit. Not doing DIY is actually the harmful route in these conditions.
They did surgery on a grape. Memeing my way into an elective surgery with the help of the internet vastly improved my life and has for countless others. There was literally no way for me to get the surgery I needed through the standard healthcare system.
First off, if you acknowledge you haven't looked into it at all... Maybe do that before commenting. Not to be mean just like, you would genuinely have a lot more insight on the topic if you did
But also beyond the great answers others have given, I think it's very important to note that providing a structured space for such conversations to happen in actually enhances safety over the current status quo, which is that they still happen but in a more ad-hoc fashion. It allows people to gather reliable sources in one place and refer back to previous posts/stickies easier than if these discussions are happening in the mega or in c/traa. So unless you're proposing banning discussion of DIY, which I doubt, it should be compared against what is happening now not a theoretical "no possible harm" scenario

This seems very prudent. Should there be an exception to the blurring rule for people posting FFS pictures?
