Not for any real purpose yet but I think it would be a fun project and could help us get used to using secure communications outside of our phones. Does anyone have experience setting one up? Also there was a guide posted somewhere on Lemmy recently that I am having trouble finding if anyone could share.

https://meshtastic.org/ is probably the best place to start, they have some basic steps on how to choose a device, flash it, and connect to that device, assuming it doesn't have its own keyboard and screen (beyond a tiny OLED for status messages, anyways).

Note that you can pick up most devices from Aliexpress. https://lilygo.cc/ also has devices, but they more premium. Keep in mind frequency restrictions by country.

I've scrolled past a lot of Lora stuff on YouTube in my casual browsing. Meshtastic seems to be the big thing now. I usually watch the swedish guy though.
