Back in the day I used to really like browsing soundcloud, listening to mashups, indie artists, and whatnot. Eventually soundcloud got too big and took down a lot of content (probably due to copyright) and introduced paid "pro" accounts. Is there a place like the early soundcloud on the fediverse?

Nice. Maybe I'll post some of my stuff there so I can have a third place where nobody listens to my music lmao.

What kind of music do you make?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I guess stoner metal (but also occasionally folk metal-ish), but the biggest influences on what I write are the Sword, Mastodon, Sleep, and Black Sabbath. But also sometimes I might make drum n bass or a trap beat, but I don't usually upload those lol

I was just scrolling by with no skin in this game but I love the Sword and Sabbath so you sir hooked my interest.

Right on, I've found my people haha. I have some of my music on youtube (same name as here). I have more on SoundCloud (also same name as here), but those are generally first pass mixes and don't sound as good imo. Check it out if you get a chance, I'd love to get some fresh ears on it.

Funkwhale is interesting, but feels more like a plex/subsonic/jellyfin server than a social media place. I can't follow artists on Funkwhale and listen to their latest posts. There isn't a "feed" anywhere, it's more like a giant shared-music server (unless I'm missing something).

Yah it's more like grooveshark years and years ago.

[–] [email protected] 20 points 1 year ago (2 children)

there is FunkWhale
not sure how it compares to SoundCloud, but it is certainly some sort of successor to GrooveShark

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Wow Grooveshark. What a flashback.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I got KeePass before I got Grooveshark. I still have my account info!

Man I miss Grooveshark. Used to be awesome! Forgot what happened to it?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It got taken down because there was so much licensed music uploaded to it, I believe

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Well that was the whole purpose. What makes this Funkywhale any different?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Federation, probably harder for music labels to go after so many instances?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I think the opposite. Most of the instances are closed/invite only, so there's no way to know if there's any improperly licensed music there. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Ah that’s funny, kind of like private trackers

That's a name I haven't heard in forever! They built so much hype around Grooveshark and I dont remember it ever even working.
