There is no social housing left. Meanwhile, people are having to put up to 80% of their salary towards private rent in some parts of London, according to this 2019 article:

Buying homes as investments really needs to be de-incentivised. Mega tax on residential properties that aren't occupied by the owners? I don't know enough to know the answer, all I know is that renting costs way more than monthly mortgage repayments, yet I'm on a low wage and wouldn't get accepted for a mortgage. Meanwhile greedy private landlords are making renters pay off their mortgage at a profit.
