Welcome to libre

A comm dedicated to the fight for free software with an anti-capitalist perspective.

The struggle for libre computing cannot be disentangled from other forms of socialist reform. One must be willing to reject proprietary software as fiercely as they would reject capitalism. Luckily, we are not alone.

Resources

  1. Free Software, Free Society provides an excellent primer in the origins and theory around free software and the GNU Project, the pioneers of the Free Software Movement.
  2. Switch to GNU/Linux! If you're still using Windows in $CURRENT_YEAR, flock to Linux Mint!; Apple Silicon users will want to check out Asahi Linux.

Rules

  1. Be on topic: Posts should be about free software and other hacktivst struggles. Topics about general tech news should be in the technology comm or programming comm. That doesn't mean all posts have to be serious though, memes are welcome!
  2. Avoid using misleading terms/speading misinformation: Here's a great article about what those words are. In short, try to avoid parroting common Techbro lingo and topics.
  3. Avoid being confrontational: People are in different stages of liberating their computing, focus on informing rather than accusing. Debatebro nonsense is not tolerated.
  4. All site-wide rules still apply

fuck reddit and all but i'm sure some of us use it for some very carefully curated hobby related stuff or maybe still browse TrueAnon or Deprogram, which are basically Hexbear rear-guard outposts

someone suggested RedReader as the last surviving android app that somehow still uses reddit's old API.

so I grabbed it on F-Droid and

wow compared to browsing with firefox mobile + ublock it's a game changer. quick, snappy, with rich features. took a minute to get used to the UI but it's vastly superior to it's predecessors

who knows how long it will use whatever backdoor it does

EDIT, FYI: it doesn't seem to allow viewing of anything flagged NSFW despite granting permission. whatever API backdoor it uses won't allow it. sucks because some useful non-horny subreddits are flagged NSFW just to protect them from bans

Infinity also works, if you build it.
For normal non-programmer folk, the sub for it has a Top post which mentions a GCollab script to build it. There seems to be a gitlab script available on the net too. Do check the scripts tho.

When they killed RIF is fun I decided I'll never go back. And I won't. Fuck reddit-logo

Reddit on browser is a shit experience which varies from annoying to unusable.

I use revanced sync, still works quite nicely. P sure other apps have compatability patches too

Gonna keep this one in mind. I've been using ReVanced's patched version of Sync but it's based on the last update from like April of last year. It's only a matter of time before future updates start breaking stuff.

I was using redreader when the other apps were shut down. The person who made it said they tried to kill it too but there were complaints the new reddit app was impossible for blind people to use.

Also the new reddit didn't have mod tools so all their big mods had to use redreader

I tested this out today. It has a real programmers interface but it sure its fast which is real nice.

I'm still using Joey whenever I feel the need to pop over and check on the subreddit I nominally mod.

Yeah, RedReader is what I use when I need to check in on a couple of subs. I'm not logging in tho.
