Reading theory, finally. This post inspired me: https://lemmy.ml/post/22417306

Wow that's a great thread

I am writing a go program which I will be releasing as FOSS soon. I don't think I can share much about that without doxing myself, but that has been fun and I think it will be useful to some people i know. I got Warcraft 2 battle chest running through lutris with my old iso. Playing through the orc campaign right now and I am trying hard not to get pulled into modding yet. All of this vintage gaming is causing some wrist strain though lol. Thank goodness for modern control schemes!

I will be summoning some seitan and other holiday recipes so that I have some more practice before we have some carnists (and others) over. I like to cook, but the holiday season adds some anxiety to that because I feel like I need to prove that my food is just as good as others.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago

Oh yeah holiday season is harsh. I feel like no matter what you do somebody is unhappy because it's not what their grandmother made back in 1982 or whatever.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago

Best of luck on your project. Also if you haven't already look into a vertical mouse. Can help with the wrist strain for at least your mouse hand. Helps my carpal tunnel syndrome

Still working on my music mostly. I've gotten really into playing the trumpet lately but my main instrument is still the guitar. I'm currently learning some 90s rock songs, like Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago

Maceooo! Blow your horn!!

although... I guess Maceo Parker was a Sax player lol

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Oh no I missed this.

I have taken my 3d printed sluice out for use. I dug around in a river a bit, I think I picked bad spots as despite finding many indicator stones I only found 1 sapph and a handful of zircons (although one might be cutting quality). However!

There's gold in them thar plateau!

First time finding it, pretty neat. Tiny amount though.

We just had some rain so it's running a bit high. Gonna be a little busy for the next while launching a website and end of year stuff but I'll be sneaking back out there as often as I can derilict my duties.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

This is so cool. I love that you are finding literal treasure 💖

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago

It's been a really fun thing to take up. On a certain level it's just digging holes and sifting things so it's great to have a simple, repetitive task to relax with.

On the other hand though where to dig and how to sift is all underpinned by interesting physics and geology. Because I'm a massive dork trying to piece together where stuff is going to be deposited, and seeing demonstrations of principles of fluidisation and stratification by like "wow the shiny thing is there!" is satisfying.

I have been chomping at the bit while trying to stay patient and positive during my recovery period. PT is being slow about getting me in and my stir-craziness is starting to get the better of me. At the same time though I'm grateful that things are the way they are. I know there are many people worse off than I am and my heart goes out to them. Limitations suck.

I spent the last week slowly but surely cleaning up the back yard and removing/burning overgrown shrubs (WHY ARENT YOU YAUPON?!?!?!?) so that our dogs have more space to run and play and potty. The weather has been crappy and rainy which sucks for most things but worked out perfectly for burning brush. Silver lining, or something.

Besides that life has been pretty standard. I've been trying desperately to get back to reading my books but it seems like distractions continually pop up and prevent me from "getting in the zone" where all I want to do is bury myself in a book. This week's priority is to do more reading, distraction be damned!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Hope your recovery goes well! And don't overdo things too quick. I did that one time and it drastically set me back even further than where i started 🤦

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago

Thanks for the kind wishes. I'm doing my best to stay disciplined and within what my body tells me I can handle. Once this side heals I have to have the same things done to the other side, so I need to learn to live with it for a bit lol.

I'm trying to turn my web dev hobby/education into a freelance career. I have a business site with a few demo sites up and everything.

I have been wanting to make my niche mostly "leftist businesses" but I won't turn down a lib or whatever just as long as it's not like a hate site. I'm trying to get some feelers out into the community more now due to the political climate shift after this last election. I just really wanna try and help any marginalized group for any activist projects they might be starting. I have a bit of an advantage in that regard because I'm a bit known for being about and loud leftist in a severely conservative stronghold of a city. I just need to keep networking.

I've mentioned it in weekly threads before but I've started taking wheel pottery classes. It's very nice to just hang out with some clay.

I brought earplugs this week and it was way less overwhelming than previous weeks. I haven't gotten used to being out in public again!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

What do they have you making so far?

Neat! Looks like some progress between the pieces. Better than my awful pot haha, it's sister pot has cracked during drying and needs surgery.

I'm guessing they get smoothed after getting 'leather hard' or whatever? I don't know anything about wheel pottery.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You'd think... But the order of production is top right, bottom, top left lol

All we've done so far is throw, we learn about trimming this week.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Oh in that case, running out of beginner's luck? :p

I suppose taller things are harder?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

To be honest, I don't know!

I think I'm still not confident or comfortable with the basics. My partner is catching on a lot quicker than me, but has agreed to book some practice time in the studio (where you just play with clay vs keeping anything) before doing another course.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago

Well hopefully your partner is a good teacher! and can pass on their wisdom. Or maybe can do one of those romcom scenes with the hands on yours guiding hug.

Still, no substitute for just messing around when it comes to any craft. As long as you enjoy the process there's not really any disadvantage to taking longer to get the knack of something, unless you're trying to make a living of it.

Ive actually had to scale back a lot of hobbies due to time constraints. But I have been working on building a portfolio since i am concerned about my employment long term. Havent made as much progress as i would like but I've been trying to get back onto a stricter schedule so i can work on it a little bit each day.

//

Unrelated but had to say goodbye to one of our dogs today. She had been part of the family for 12 years. Shits rough.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago

I'm so sorry for your loss 😞

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago

Shits rough.

I'm so sorry.

Many of us know this feeling very personally and deeply. I've been there before and dread the day I'll feel that way again.

Somehow animals pour out love that is seemingly endless. Each one is unique and irreplaceable, and it can take a long time before the memories are enough to bring your heart peace.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago

Loss is always hard, and a bitter price to pay for love. I hope you have space in life to grieve.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago

It is a bummer how many people echo that they don't have time for anything else but work, I'm feeling similar pressures and it sucks.

Sorry for your loss 🙏

Tell us about a personal project, hobby, side thing, activity that you’ve been getting into lately.

A friend recently gifted me a PinePhone so I've been playing around with it and testing various linux distros on it. I've elected to use postmarketOS running Phosh and it's surprisingly usable as a phone. When it does break (due to user error of course) I can plug in a keyboard via USB-C and open a tty to fix it, or open an SSH connection to it (assuming that didn't break due to user error too).

Now, it's been fucking hot here due to a heatwave and my place—generally being much warmer than outside due to gigantic east-west facing windows (seriously, they take up nearly the entire wall)—that I haven't been able to take my ADHD meds the past few days. So being able to do nothing but tinker with linux on a phone has been interesting, but fun enough to distract me from the pains of living in this terrible accommodation lol.

Also, thanks Australia for forcing me to use a new phone due to the absolutely scuffed 3G (+ the 4G/5G devices we won't tell you about until we block them randomly!) shutdown. Fucking e-waste producing gremlins...

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 weeks ago

Neat! I've always wanted to try a pine phone. I recently decided to try the iPhone after using Android for a decade and I absolutely hate it. I find it really hard to use which is funny because of its reputation.

been just preposterously busy with work as i just got kind of thrust into a new role as a sysadmin for which i am entirely unqualified, lol. but! in order to swim rather than sink i'm now learning Powershell, which will hopefully be useful long-term. we're also in a season of needing a lot of work on our home; my wife and i just finished rebuilding a fence that blew over in a windstorm, and then as we were preparing for a flooring project we found mold in some drywall that we've had to isolate and will need to mitigate, and just this morning we had someone out to do a yearly furnace check and we need a new actuator in the furnace. hopefully by the time this is all done i'll both know powershell and also be a functional handyman, ha! which is something i never had any interest in before.

outside of work and home repair, i'm trying to start a habit of yoga in addition to my meditation practice, but that's been tough because the room i usually do yoga in is the room that closed off due to the mold remediation! lol/sob.

also just trying to stay on top of cooking. my wife and i make a giant weekly pot of Nigerian style jollof rice, and that's been a great relief so we don't need to figure out lunches for the first few days of the week.

so, boring life stuff but busy. never a dull moment.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago

I like the PSKoans powershell module. It teaches you about the language through unit tests that are presented as a questions that you are expected to answer. Best of luck on both of your new learning pursuits!

I have all the equipment to start kratky hydro like Frosty and now NaevaTheRat but I haven't really gotten started. To be honest I think my new project has been my personal health, I was more tired than usual and having headaches and this caused me to actually go to the doctor for the first time in a few years. They were of course extremely unhelpful so I downloaded a medical textbook from Anna's archive https://annas-archive.org/md5/b99067cc9d12841cc79f85ae6c62df76 and read about diagnosis and treatment and then went to aliexpress and bought medical equipment. I've learned I had high blood pressure so I've been taking steps to change that dynamic, mostly by increasing the amount of greens I eat by a lot, exercising every day and trying to get less mad at my job and its been working. Now I am trying to figure out why I'm not sleeping well and doing daily monitoring. I think I have OSA so I'm going to try to lose 10 lbs (which is apparently much harder than I thought, a few years ago I lost 36 kilo with major life style change but losing 4 is taking forever) and research the mouth guards. There is so much misinformation and bullshit though it is hard to know though lol.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Had to look up the kratky hydro thing but looks pretty neat!

Also i hate how unhelpful doctors are. Product of healthcare systems trying to churn patients out as fast as possible. Hope you're able to lose the weight and figure out the rest of the health stuff.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago

I already got the blood pressure under control! There is a serious problem when the doctors become disease management specialists and assume people don't do what it takes to get better, but I suppose it is true in their experiences.

My friend is doing kratky in an apartment in NYC and grows fresh lettuce at high rates, its so cool but I'm so lazy lol

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

I accidentally looked outside of this instance on some of the wider Lemmy posts and saw someone who is presumably American complain about lemmy.ml promoting "oppressive, violent, ignorant political ideology. " LOL Which country just elected Trump and is funding wars around the world again? Hm
