First of all, I am a spice fiend. I’m living at home with my (25F) parents (67F and 73M) and my mom got a habanero plant that produces some hot as hell peppers. For context, I ate one raw one time, having eaten raw habaneros a handful of other times no problem, and it was hotter than the one chip challenge, had me in indescribable pain, hotter than any habanero that has passed my lips before. I also eat habanero hot sauce no problem. Anyways, I eat one every day in my morning omelettes no problem because cooking them makes them less evil and still spicy with good flavor. Today I looked into the fridge and to my despair, no eggs. I had already cut up my habanero so I decided on making a fried chicken burrito with cheddar cheese, spinach, the habanero, and red bell pepper. I decided to fry up the chicken with the habanero and red bell pepper. I got the peppers real nice and seared and noticed I kept coughing. No big deal tho, I was hungry. My dad came down stairs and started having a massive coughing fit and his eyes were watering, he said he could smell them from upstairs and was coughing. I poked fun at him for not being able to handle being around the spice and laughed. When my mom came home from the grocery store, we were bringing groceries into the kitchen and we could barely talk to one another bc everyone was in fits of uncontrollable coughing spasms. My parents are mad at me and my mom is going to throw the pepper plant away. I simply did not realize that I was releasing a ton of gaseous Capsaicin into the whole house. The scovilles for pepper spray is 1/2 million (500,000) to 2 million or more. The scovilles in this habanero ranges from 150,000 to 350,000 but honestly I think these habaneros are hotter than 350,000. I never want to be pepper sprayed bc if this is a fraction of the discomfort it causes, it must be absolutely unbearable. Don’t be stupid like me.
TL; DR I created a very diluted pepper spray in the house by frying extremely spicy homegrown habaneros and my family has been coughing non stop and are very angry at me.
