With the Fallout show Ive been nostalgic for NV but Lemmy got me on this pinko commie operating system and I cant figure out how to make Wine, Steam, Proton, and Mod Organizer 2 all work together like a big happy family. DAE Science <50?

Not the ideal way to do it, but I literally just pirated the game [1] and installed it as a Windows application with stock WINE-staging. I then installed Vortex as a Windows application with stock WINE, installed some mods, and played some modded FNV on Linux. It played just as well on Linux as it did on Windows even with all the mods.

Point being, the way that worked best for me was to just treat it and all its mods as a Windows application and let stock WINE handle it for me.

[1] I purchased the game on Steam but I couldn't be arsed to find the Windows executables or get it to work with Steam and Proton.

Which Wine are you on? 9.x or a something downstream?

[-] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago

9.8 Staging currently. I'm on Debian, but I get WINE from the WineHQ repo.

Just did it myself on Linux Mint:

You want SteamTinkerLaunch, which the Git page mentions there's another program I can't recall the name of right now (proton something) you can use to install it.

If you're on a Debian based OS the version of YAD you can get is laughably out of date (0.4 vs the minimum 7.0) so you'll have to compile that yourself but that's ezpz

With STL enabled and set as your comparability tool launch it and install MO2 and mod away to your heart's content

I used Vortex instead because I hate everyone else and like watching them cringe when I say that. 0 issues.

Oh, proton will need to be ABOVE 8.5c to work with certain mods. 9.0 works great ime

Wow is that why YAD is so terrible. Literally put me off from using STL, its so slow. Thank yoooouuuu

Alas Im pretty attached to Mod Organizer 2.5s qol improvements and STLs script for MO2 is still installing 2.4 I think. Under Wine 9 MO2.5 runs but not games, under Proton 9 games run but not Mod Organizer. Im also playing GoG releases and trying to find out how to run them outside Proton since Proton is linked to Steam. Ill probably try Glorious Eggroll Wine next.

I like running MO2 because these specific kinds of headaches fill me with determination and I like seeing people cringe when I say that. Infinite issues xD

I got Fallout working!

I forgot to install dxvk in Wine!

My tips in this endeavor for others:

In Wine 9 and above use Winetricks to install the latest Visual Studio as well as the LAV audio codec, Quartz.dll, and the dxvk graphics api.

Install Mod Organizer 2.5 in Wine and set games up as you would in Windows.

If using another Wine or Proton version just make sure it has qt6 runtimes.

If you use Mod Organizer 2 version 2.4.4 or below, nix the qt6 requirement. 2.4.4 works fine for older games but is missing support for some newer titles like Baldur's Gate 3.

I have it all working together myself, I can help you, if you have a matrix or discord

I just started playing it and it’s pretty fun so far.

I made a low INT character, because playing low INT on Outer Worlds was pretty fun

[-] [email protected] 13 points 2 weeks ago

No spoilers, but as a low INT character I recommend doing any surgical operations that you have the chance to do. It's a fun time.

I haven't run into any of those, so I have no idea what that’s about, but I will! hahaha

Low INT is weak, but also extremely fun for roleplaying. The number of skill points you get when you level up is based on your INT. Base it's 10, but it can go up to 15 with maxed INT.

Conveniently doing a run right now since I never completed it thanks to a game breaking bug back in ~2011. It do feel fun just charming people to get your way. But man the game is pure jank (at least on Windows). Routinely thinking "I could be playing F4 right now" but the writing keeps me going.

I should have posted somewhere else for tech help, sorry @kingthrillgore.

Which are your favorite side factions and why? I love the Kings for obvious reasons but also the Chairmen for being uncomplicated (unlike the Kings) and committed to being a calm, chill casino operation and nothiing more.

I prefer the Kings because I usually end up with Rex as my first companion and I remember to keep the King in my favor for my NCR runs.

Don't be sorry about NV bugs. Its buggy, but its not being made worse by Bethesda at least.

I wish we could go independent and have some sort of counsel meeting where we put King in charge of Freeside officially, he has such a solid moral compass. But maybe he needs to exist outside of the actual law or he'd be as corruptible as anyone else.

Modding these games to a worlable state and then breaking them with yet more mods is my happy place! Sort of coopted your post in that regards though. Seeking validation from the FNV/196 community overlap is heckin valid <3

[-] [email protected] 3 points 2 weeks ago

I'm eager to revisit NV and 3 soon... I did 4 modded survival mode about a year ago and that was some fun shit.

76 is also on my radar as I've heard it has improved tremendously to be a respectable offering, even if not the best in the series.

Guess that's just how the fallout falls baby. Fallout New Vegas ring a ding ding

I fail to see the problem
