Matrix has baked in encryption, can be self hosted and has a large team of developers behind it so it is least likely to not be vapourware. The clients are not great but that's a fine compromise. With their newly released rust SDK some might become faster. But I guess it's trash because you can't spam emotes in it.

- Matrix has less features than aforementioned alternatives, it doesn't even have proper media sharing code, all embeds stay as it is
- UI is bad, comparatively
- matrix also asks for money for additional features which is not the case for guilded and revolt
- matrix is more like telegram chat than an actual server
- Matrix is fast if you self host, which is free. I have one we can use if necessary.
- Its actually secure, self hostable, and encrypted, unlike the others you mentioned.
- UI rules, and it has apps on every platform.
- No, 100% of its features are available if you self host: its an open source project.
- It has spaces, ie collections of rooms, which are the same as discords if that's what you're thinking of.
What features are paywalled? Afaik synapse is completely free and open source and so is element and a ton of other clients.
iirc there are some features you will get after buying element home subscription. not to mention matrix also crashes sometimes and quite often you might have to wait for a long time
Yeah, it is often slower than Discord. The reason for this is that it's decentralized and encrypted. It's slow because it's secure. I'd rather lose a few minutes of time than have the US government spy on me.
