This is so fucking relevant to me right now, just yesterday I heard a woodpecker on my walk and I made it my mission to spot it in that giant tree. Then in my later walk I saw a red cardinal. Later I was talking about how it’s kinda cheating when people pick ostrich, peacock, penguin etc as their favorite birds, and it slowly dawned on me that I’m becoming a bird guy.

A coupl years back I bought binoculars with the sole (soul?) purpose of watching birds. Seven years ago I didn't give a shit.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 4 months ago (1 children)

It's your sole soul purpose.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 months ago

Lol that did not help! I'm going to have to look that up later.

You were right the first time. Sole means only; soul is a religious concept; sole means the bottom of your shoe: sole is a fish

Thank you for the clarity :)

Just keep in mind that the one with U is the one that's YOU.

Concepts like "soul music" work fine with this, because they are about an untameable essence of the self.

But if I've forgotten an exception, do please point it out, dear lemmings.

Me too. I live in an area now with hawks, ravens, and I can hear a Great Horned Owl at night, but never been able to spot it. These all make me inordinately excited.

I like a lot of birds, but let's be honest; the peacock really is the most beautiful bird, it's not even a close competition.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 months ago

That was my pick too and then my girlfriend penguin. In my opinion those were boring picks, so I added the stipulation of size.

Cardinals are great, that are really pretty birds that are common enough that you can probably spot one daily in most parts of the US is you take a walk.

My grandfather used to say if you don't learn something new each day you'll be dead by tomorrow.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Was that a threat? You must know many things being still alive and all lol

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 months ago

haha, hopefully lemmy will make me immortal.

Did you know a cat's penis is sharply barbed along it's shaft? I know for a fact the females were not consulted about that.

I wanted to figure out the call of a bird, then I downloaded Merlin, and now I bought a 400mm lens to get sick photos of birds. What the hell happened

[–] [email protected] 9 points 4 months ago

Came here to shill for Merlin, too

Look, Raymond: a yellow-crested warbler.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 4 months ago

Not excited enough. They may be common, but they're still birds.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I just put up a bird feeder, I'm doomed

[–] [email protected] 5 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I started with one. Now there's 4 and I designed a squirrel feeder.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago

Need to design a squirrel yeeter, damn things eat too much.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 4 months ago

It's true. As a young boy I wanted to see tits so bad but nowadays all I need is just look out the window

[–] [email protected] 7 points 4 months ago

Apparently I was born old.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 4 months ago

Yup can confirm, it's already got me lol

[–] [email protected] 6 points 4 months ago (1 children)

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 months ago

The cool birdwatching type.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I legit can't imagine ever being indifferent to birds

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 months ago

I too hate how the CIA uses them to spy on us

[–] [email protected] 5 points 4 months ago (1 children)

My bro killed a coyote the other day and left the carcass near our house. Now we have condors. They're so fuckin cool.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Oh I have always wanted to see condors! Like from when I was about 5. There were only about 60 then. Then they rounded up all 22 of the last California Condors in 1987..... Now there's over 500 and you get to see them! No lead in your brother's ammo, I hope and expect.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago

Thats a good point. I'll ask him about that.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Me, except I can only identify waterfowl easily. Mostly different types of ducks.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I have you tagged as "Duck expert" based on one of your previous comments or posts, so that checks out.

Close. Ive been noticing more bluejays and cardinals around here the last couple years. Mockingbirds are always around but dont see them as much

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago

Maybe it's the hearing loss. I can still hear birds perfectly.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 months ago

I really got into it this year (early 30’s) and I am straight kicking my younger self, when I knew someone with 5 pet birds and I didn’t care!
