:** For today's song I picked Take Me Home, Country Roads by John Denver. My wife and I danced to this song at our wedding for our first dance. We spent a couple of months taking dance lessons and practicing a choreographed routine. Not something I thought I'd ever do, that's for sure.

No waltz at the wedding? If the Austrian ministry of culture learns of this outrage, you can expect a visit of the GeWaPo (secret waltz police).

Yes, I have received it! Thanks!

Quintidi 5 Messidor an 233 de la Révolution, jour de Mulet

This rose soap is really good, and it is getting better every time I use it. I don't know exactly how this works, but it is what it is.

Have a good night!

Quartidi 4 Messidor an 233 de la Révolution, jour de Véronique

The razor is very sharp, but not that confortable. I should probably do something about that.

Have a good day.

[BVWSC Reminder] (sub.wetshaving.social)
submitted 2 months ago by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

This Wednesday is the day, so start blooming your smush!

I was wondering about the immediate sequel: Our Mayday shave is set, and I guess in June, there will be the Lather Games. Is this correct, and do we go on hiatus, just as we did last year for August?

It is time again to suggest your soaps for the May edition!

Proposals close on Friday 4, 12:00 MEST.

As of today, I still have not received the smush from @[email protected], and this Wednesday is the last one in March. So, what do we do?

Option 1: We drop the club shave for March, and if we still receive the smushes, maybe convene twice in April.

Option 2: We shave with a soap we all have. We discussed this issue briefly on Free Talk Friday, and the only soap that has a chance to be the common denominator is Tabac. However, I don't know whether everybody here has it, and whether you would be interested in shaving with it in the first place.

Opinions?

It is time again to prepare for the Buena Vista Wetshaving Social Club April edition, which will take place on April 16. Nominate your soap here!

For those new here: we choose a soap, the lucky proponent sends smushes out to all participants, and we all shave with the same soap on the 3rd Wednesday of the month. If you want to join: simply nominate a soap, and vote for a winner!

Proposal thread remains open until Sunday March 2, 22:30 CET (whatever that is where you live).

Nonidi 9 Pluviôse an 233 de la Révolution, jour du Peuplier

I took out the frio today – a surprisingly light razor, given its size, and very sharp. I should use it more regularly.

Have a good evening!

Sextidi 26 Nivôse an 233 de la Révolution, jour d'Étain: Buena Vista Wetshaving Social Club - January Edition

Time for BVWSC again, this time courtesy of @[email protected]! Like @[email protected], both the soap and the artisan are new to me. The soap was expertly sealed, and was black, as advertised. To stay on theme, I also chose a razor with black scales.

Upon opening it, I mainly got an impression of smoke. They say:

The combination of cypress, vetiver, frankincense and musk appears fresh and dark at the same time. He [sic!] has something dry and earthy about it.

~The probably machine-generated translation did not use a recent LLM, I assume~

I found the scent very discrete, and had trouble identifying any of these (maybe because my nose is not as functional as usual these days in the cold season?). I also found the soap rather finicky to lather: I had to use about double the dose I thought initially I would need, and still slightly overshot the optimal dose of water, resulting in a rather runny, and not very protective lather (yes, I cut myself in the neck, you guessed correctly).

The experience of @[email protected] was markedly different, so probably I should try this again with filtered water and a synthetic nod (I have very hard water, which plays not too well with other artisans as well, e.g., AYLM). I reserve judgment for the moment, and will try again – the smush is big enough for a second shave.

Have a good day!

A Look Back on 2024 (sub.wetshaving.social)
submitted 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

Thanks to the newly acquired logging capacity of sotd.el (the oldest SOTD plugin for any reasonable^TM^ editor I am aware of), I've been logging every shave this year, and I thought: why not inflict the data on you?

I shaved 231 times in 2024 (roughly every 1.5 days). The move from reddit to lemmy coincides with a switch to straights – straight razors dominated my routine in 2024 (64.5%), though I still used my DE razors (22.5%) [though mostly when not at home], and occasionally I used GEM (9.5%) or AC (3.5%). If this continues, I will never again have to buy new blades. My brush collection splits between horse (45%), boar (32%), and synthetic (22.9%).

Let's go into the details, shall we?

Razors

Razor Frequency
Thiers-Issard 188 7/8 'Coq et Renard' - Straight 40
Parker Straight Razor - Straight 29
River Razors Kamisori - Straight 22
Koraat 14.2 Straight Razor - Straight 21
Ertan Süer L'Ours Russe (7/8th) - Straight 20
King C. Gillette DE Razor - DE 14
Edwin Jagger DE89 - DE 12
Greencult GC 2.0 II - DE 12
Dovo Barbarossa Stainless - Straight 11
Mühle R41 (3-piece) - DE 9
Star 1912 Type Razor - GEM 9
GEM MMOC - GEM 9
Feather Artist Club SS Kamisori - AC 5
J.A. Henckels Friodur 72 - Straight 4
GEM Flying Wing - GEM 4
Tedalus Essence - AC 3
Karve CB Brass C Plate CC - DE 3
Soviet Straight Razor Raketa - Straight 2
Merkur 34C - DE 2

My top five razors are straights, and it appears that I have somewhere a Friodur that I've forgotten to use.

Semogue 610 Boar 🐗 8
Yaqi Aqua 24mm Synthetic 6

2024 was once again dominated by the Semogue C3 horse brush. Greatly recommended!

Trivia

I had Claude explain the chi-squared test to me and apply it to my data. It turns out that the Blaireau de la République has become dedicated to Zingari Man soaps (a value of 100.40 with one degree of freedom, highly significant, p>>0.001).

I killed three soaps (Autumn Ash, Schafmilch and Marduk), and bought three others – which is net neutral overall (yay!). I unfortunately was less disciplined with razor purchases.

The BVWSC shaves allowed me to get to know several artisans that were unknown to me, and some impressed me highly. I did not yet jump the gun, though, and my thoughts for purchases are rather geared towards what I could possibly propose as not-so-well-known soaps for the club.

In 2025, one aim is to improve my honing skills – which yield as of yet rather unpredictable outcomes.

Thank you for attending my TED Talk!

Good shave today – and it's strange to see that my shaves with a straight are closer than those I get from an (admitedly very mild) DE razor.

Have a good evening.

FWIW, in other contexts where the risk of injury is unacceptable, I have seen a general consensus on recommendations for the Oneblade. It appears that it's basically impossible to cut yourself, even if you try. So if injury is a major issue, but getting an ultraclose shave and spending 30ish € aren't, you may want to look into this.

Edit: It can be used dry or with lather.

Sunday, May 26, 2024: Sunday again!

I underhydrated the lather in the beginning, and it was not as slick as it could have been. And I continue to use this soap in spite of the scent rather than because of it.

Have a nice day!

I'm tired today, and felt it more prudent to use a DE. I nevertheless managed to nick myself in the upper lip.

Have a good day!
