"Unused road" is ridiculous except in extremes. Unless people merge well over a mile back, 1 lane of traffic will make no difference. The only way "unused road" matters is for the people that haven't entered the traffic jam yet who are getting off before they reach it.

Very few people (from what I've seen) merge more than 30 car lengths out. 30 cars is not going to make a difference.

What does make a difference is the fact that we can't do a merge at speed because some people want to "zipper late." It's the zipper behavior that matters, the "at the very end" part never should've been added to that recommendation.

Looking at an actual research paper about this, the zipper merge demonstrated is not at the last possible point. A merge point forms ahead of that point and that's what should be used. The pictures from their study show the zipper occurring over a wide area with many of the zipped cars driving in the middle.

https://rosap.ntl.bts.gov/view/dot/35694

I don't know how studies like this have become the recommendations we have. They seem to me to miss critical bits.

Edit: based on my quick read, it's worth noting the study finds only minimal support for the zipper merge and only in contexts not involving trucks largely based on visual analysis from their video feed as the quantitative data was not statistically significant. We need better transparency on recommendations like this frankly and the research supporting them. We should be able to have an honest debate on the merits of the papers.

I really like the idea of peertube, but until it finds a way to pay creators I'm not sure it will ever be able to replace YouTube.

YouTube is as good as it is because people get paid.

The old school YouTubers just did it for fun, but YouTube was a lot different back then ... and as much as I hate how aggressively Google is monetizing YouTube these days, it's honestly a lot higher quality than it was years ago.

The problem with zipper merges as this person describes them is a zipper merge is SUPPOSED TO get traffic back up to speed. However, when your take on the zipper merge is "up there where the wreck is at the last possible spot I can merge" there's no time for a human to safely merge at speed. So everything has to continue at a crawl.

So the people jumping out of their lane and "zipper merging" at the last second instead of 50 feet out or so end up making things worse for everyone.

The zipper does not and should not be at the point of the physical problem on the road. Just like you should not just drive to the end of the on ramp and at the last possible second merge into the lane on your left without paying attention.

I really can't more strongly disagree with this take.

Zipper merging is to interleave two lanes of traffic when there's one lane of traffic available ahead.

It DOES NOT matter if it's done with 3 feet to merge or 300 feet to merge. There's no efficiency gain.

What does matter is some assholes trying to merge at speed at the last possible second.

The zipper point should not be the point where there's NO ROOM to merge SAFELY without EVERYONE going 3 miles per hour.

The handful of times I've seen a zipper merge actually start to work, someone rushes down to the end of the line where the problem is, nearly causes a second accident trying to get over, and then everything starts moving at a crawl again.

You don't need to zipper merge at the "physical barrier" causing the zipper merge to be necessary.

Why would a car alarm be a problem...?

Every place I've ever been, they take the keys and drive it into the garage to do any work they're doing.

Car alarm should only be relevant if the mechanic locks the car, no?

I think it's fine to have an opinion, just qualify it with "I've not been in that situation before, but ... I think bla ... because bla."

It's just about being honest.

I had a friend who's latest and greatest dating advice was to go back and hangout at the college I graduated from (at the time already) several years ago.

I thought it was an incredibly disingenuous and creepy suggestion.

Him and his partner were like "it's totally fine..."

Not a single female friend disagreed with me that, that would be very creepy and I absolutely should not do that.

He got mad that I would never listen to his (terrible) dating advice.

I'm surprised wheat buns aren't more popular. If they're good, they add their own charming character to a burger

Yeah, like the other person said this is normal for the borderlands games.

I agree with you, I don't like it either though.

[-] [email protected] 3 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

It shouldn't but people (especially in the context of something "not important" like gaming) as a mass do not operate on logic.

So I guess I agree; but, you're probably wasting your breath "yelling into the wind."

I guess, put another way, I've done it many times/used to think more this way and I think I might have appreciated more nudges that "... yeah you're right but people are going to people regardless of what makes sense."

It kind of does, early reviews and sentiment can have a big impact on how well the game does long term.

It is not; it's a distinctly British-influenced if not outright British term.

A complaint I've had for a while is that the Proton Mail bridge auto starts with the ProtonMail Bridge configuration window open. If you're like me, everytime you restart your computer, Proton Mail Bridge jumps up in your face and you immediately close it.

TIL (today I learned), there's a flag you can pass on the command line "--no-window" that starts the app without opening a window.

If you edit your system startup entry (this varies by operating system) and add this flag to its command line arguments, Proton Mail Bridge will still start, however, it will start to the tray and no window will appear.

As an example on KDE Linux:

  1. Search for "Autostart"
  2. Press the "See Properties" button on the Proton Mail Bridge Autostart entry
  3. Go to the "Application" tab
  4. Add "--no-window" to the "Arguments" text box (it should be an empty text box, if it's not make sure there's a space between any existing arguments, e.g., "--foo" -> "--foo --no-window" not "--foo" -> "--foo--no-window")
  5. Press "OK" and the next time you reboot your computer, Proton Mail should auto start in the background to the tray.

Today we are announcing a new privacy feature coming to Kagi Search. Privacy Pass is an authentication protocol first introduced by Davidson and recently standardized by the IETF as RFCs. At the same time, we are announcing the immediate availability of Kagi’s Tor onion service.

In general terms, Privacy Pass allows “Clients” (generally users) to authenticate to “Servers” (like Kagi) in such a way that while the Server can verify that the connecting Client has the right to access its services, it cannot determine which of its rightful Clients is actually connecting. This is particularly useful in the context of a privacy-respecting paid search engine, where the Server wants to ensure that the Client can access the services, and the Client seeks strong guarantees that, for example, the searches are not associated with them.

Crytek posted a status update today on Reddit.

Stillwater Update 2.0.1 – PC Steam, Ps5, Xbox Series – week of September 16th-20th

  • Visually enhanced Stillwater Bayou map returning to rotation.
  • Fixed bugs that could cause dedicated servers to crash.
  • Resolved additional infrequent crashes possible during gameplay.
  • Fixed an issue where a black screen might appear when launching the game for the first time on Windows 10

UI Specific Changes coming with Stillwater Update 2.0.1 – same as above

  • Clicking on Bloodline Info above the hunter in the lobby now opens the player profile.
  • Currencies in the menu header (top-left) now display in their respective colors.
  • Streamlined 'Quit' button interaction for keyboard and mouse users.
  • Updated 2D icons.
  • Added a shortcut command for 'Inspect Equipment' in the Lobby screen.
  • Favorite filter improvements.
  • Owned items will always appear first in the inventory.
  • Removed Gear from the Top Navigation.
  • Removed the 'Sell' confirmation popup window from the Gear screen.
  • Blood Bond prices are now more prominent when purchasing skins.
  • A distinct gold popup added for items requiring Blood Bonds to purchase.

And because of the clear emphasis on the need for reworking and improving the UI we also have this list of in progress changes targeting release in our October Update. Some fixes may arrive earlier, but it is important that we now shift to blending the work of bug fix patches with previously planned content updates.

Update 2.1 (incomplete list, this partial list focused on UI specifically) – All platforms, TBD October

  • Hunter paper doll loadout slots available in the Gear screen.
  • Dedicated play button in top nav.
  • Full shortcut button & key binding pass for clarity, consistency, and ease of use.
  • Filters and sorting remembered between games.
  • KDA shown in player details from Lobby.
  • Individual charms attached to any number of weapons again, no single application restriction.
  • Teammate's hunter level shown in the lobby.
  • Affordable and unaffordable traits are easier to visually differentiate.
  • The Grid View is set as the standard view for Recruit Screen.
  • "Show 3d item" added to the contextual side panel.
  • 280+ assorted minor bug fixes

Beyond the near-term updates above, our Road Map goals from last year continue with improvements and features still in development but not yet ready for release such as new ping limits, improved team chat functions, trade window improvements, and third slot matchmaking for duos wanting to add a random teammate. More details on those improvements will come as they approach release readiness in specific updates.

Thank you all again for your patience, your support, your feedback, and your criticisms. All of it is vital to improving the live service experience. We are mindful of both our successes and our shortfalls, and we are focused on the strongest future possible. We will not achieve any of it without a supportive and dedicated player base.
