the devices can be powered by on-site battery packs topped up by solar panels.

I believe this is the case for a lot of the very fast chargers, it's easier to install batteries pack to smooth the consumption rather than upgrading the grid to handle the occasional peak consumption.

The possibility to easily change the USB port definitely weight in the balance in favor of a fairphone when I picked a new phone.

Now two other members of my family have a fairphone 5 as well.

Those who have taken the entire dish onto their plates, leaving others’ plates empty, and who, having taken it all, say with a straight face and a clear conscience, “We who have everything are for peace!”—I know exactly what I must shout at them: You are the first to be violent; you are the instigators of all violence!

And when, in the evening, in your beautiful homes, you go to kiss your grandchildren, with a clear conscience, you probably have more blood on your hands—unaware of it, in God’s eyes—than the desperate person who took up arms to try to escape their despair will ever have.

But let’s not fool ourselves: violence isn’t limited to weapons; there are situations of violence.

A speech from the Abbé Pierre on the national TV in France. The man itself has been accused of multiple sexual aggression so he's not someone to admire but he did do a lot for homeless people.

English isn't my first language so it's hard to find the word to describe it.

It's definitely a unique drink, very herbal. The green is not on the herbal side, the yellow a bit more on the spices like vanilla, liquorice.

The best way to drink it is to slowly sip it in a wide glass. Like a perfume, the flavor profile change with time. So the first sip will not taste the same as the second sip.

I sometime "forgot" a glass for an hour and two and when I came back it was a completely different drink, sill as delicious as the beginning.

On the expensive side, one recently seen this display in a monastery's meeting room in France. 3m high, 5m wide filled with bottles of chartreuse, some more than a century old, some very rare editions where less than ten bottles were produced.

Any of these bottles could be sold for several thousands.

Wrong, there was a vote few months ago at the UN to make food a human right. Only two countries voted against it, the USA and Israel.

So the US don't consider food to be a human right.

5 min charging, but 15 min to park the car, plug the car, find that you need to download an app, scan the qr code, download the app, create an account, verify your email, verify your phone number, no I don't want a subscription, no don't send me customized emails from your partners, enter the 10 number of your credit card, verify the paiement on the bank app, click on "start the charge", it failed because the car was already plugged, unplug the car, redo steps 4-12, start the charge, plug the car and it's finally started charging.

This is my biggest issue with EV charger, having to jump through all that to charge the car just because they want to have their app on my phone.

With today's technology, we could just arrive at the station, plug the car and that's it.

The station can recognize the car, could get the paiement data from a shared database between chargers and start charging both my car and my credit card automatically.

The story of the liqueur is fascinating.

To start the original manuscript was an alchemist recipe for the elixir of life, it might have been brought back from Constantinople by one of François Annibal d'Estrées ancestor.

Since it seems valuable but he couldn't do anything with it, he brought it to the best herbalists he knew: the cartusian monks.

The monks worked on it for a while but it's only in 1755 that he brother Jerome Maubec managed to refine the recipe to create the first chartreuse "Elixir de Santé". The recipe was written down in a manuscript and kept secret at all cost.

A lot of events happened after that, the monk got expelled and the monastery was seized by the French revolutionaries. They came back few decades later. They created the brand "Chartreuse" in 1840.

In 1903 the monastery and the brand "Chartreuse" was seized by the French government and the monks expelled once again. This time the monks saw the wind turn in advance and moved all the production equipment in Spain to protect it and started the production there. From 1903 the Chartreuse was produced in Tarragona (Spain) by the monk.

At this period the recognition of the liquor grew internationally. In 1925 it appears in the novel "The Magnificent Gatsby".

The monks finally regains the brand after decades of trials and the right to move back their monasteries.

In 1935 a landslide destroyed their facilities at "la Fourvoirie". They saved what they could and moved everything to Voiron, to be close to a train station for logistic. (I have a picture of my great grandfather supervising the transportation of the barrels after the landslide, I can share it if I manage to find it again).

They moved the distillery to Aiguenoire in 2018.

The monks created a company that produce the chartreuse, all the technical steps (bottling, labeling ...) are done by this company under the monks supervision but the recipe is still kept secret and only a few monks have access to it. So, despite the million of bottles produced every year, the critical steps of the recipe, the mix of plants, are still done by the monks themselves in secret.

Chartreuse can be hard to find in the US right now since it grew in popularity since the early 2010s but the monks don't want to increase production. From what I understand their mindset is that there is no point of increasing the production for a trend that might be gone in a few decades.

This is the best one in my opinion (after the VEP, but the VEPs are in another budget range)

I saw this bike made by an independent bike shop for himself.

It's an electric longtail and can carry a 300kg europallet, plus the toolbox on the front, plus an extra person or material on the bike rack!

Here is the link to the shop website: https://www.cycles-penet.fr/

So, to give the context I was driving to a city 2 hours away from my home and the shortest path is through mountains.

I was surprised by the snow but, apparently I was not the only one. From afar I saw this big geese-like bird jumping on the road but realized when it tried to take off that it looked much bigger.

As I got closer I realized that it was probably a Vulture. The closest match I could find is the griffon Vulture, there is some in the area.

It did not look hurt, it was trying to fly but could not take off.

So, I had to reinstall windows as a dualboot, because I need some CAD tools for work. It was painful but it's not thebaubject

I'm running nixos with systemd-boot and I installed windows on another drive. I started to research how to add the entry on the boot list so I don't need to go in bios to switch the boot order each time I want to change OS.

Most of the information I find is about grub on nixos but I finally find information on how to add a manual entry. On the Arch wiki I find some information but now I have to blend all that to make it work on my laptop.

It's late and I'm scared to mess up my boot partition so I go to sleep to work instructions on it the next day.

The next day I'm ready to do all that only to realized that there is already the entry for windows is already in the boot menu, it has been added automatically.

So I spent all this time to think about how I while have to adjust my system manually only to realize that nixos already did it automatically for me.

To be fair they were also using encrypted messaging to talk to each other like WhatsApp and Signal, they even show their mom how to use it which is extremely suspicious.

when the DGSI [a French security agency charged with counter-espionage, counter-terrorism, countering cybercrime and surveillance of potentially threatening groups] has questioned Bastien about what he thinks of Macron. A photograph on his computer is mentioned, which according to them details the President's security arrangements for the July 14th parade. (...)

The device in question (an aerial photo taken from the press) is highlighted in such a way as to draw a dick. A dick.

The link is made with Bastien's passion for drones. The implication is that he could have used a drone to attack this dick-shaped device using explosives.

This is to protect our children of course.

As usual, so anyone who is against this law can be depicted as someone who is supporting pedopornography.

I believe this is a very good initiative. France is allowing collective self consumption.

It means that in an appartement building or in a neighborhood (up to 2km radius) people can organize in a collective to redistribute electricity to each other. If someone has extra production one day then he can redistribute to other people in the collective. For free or at the price they agreed upon in the collective.

It does not need any extra hardware, it's using the existing installation from the national utility grid.

This is exactly how I imagine a solarpunk community would work.
