Madam Speaker, last night the Minister of Public Safety made some shocking admissions. He is the minister responsible for confiscating law-abiding firearms owners' guns. He does not know what the firearms safety course is. He does not even know what a firearms licence is. I invite him to come out to my local range, the East Elgin Sportsmen's Association, and learn the things he needs to know to do his file.

Since the minister does not even know the basics of Canada's gun laws, will he halt the government's confiscation of firearms?

I suppose you didn’t hear about the new EULA for Take-Two/2K/Rockstar games eh?

Long story short they have explicit permission to install a root kit on your system which is a popular type of malware. If the developers knowingly install a root kit on your system and someone who is savvy enough decides to abuse it, well… let’s just say the outcome isn’t pretty for the end-user.

I love BL1 & BL2 but this is justification to put those games to rest or run them offline or in LAN, having a back door to people’s systems on any online game will backfire.

If Nadeko/Invidious isn’t working here is the original YouTube Link.

[-] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago

but the issue is that my VPN is blocked now, and a self hosted invidious or piped won't help with that, right?

If I’m not mistaken this is incorrect, when you self host Invidious you also must host their companion tool to help skirt around YouTube’s blocking system.

https://docs.invidious.io/installation/#linux

You have to run this command on the same public IP address as the one blocked by YouTube. Not necessarily the same machine, just the same public IP address.
You will need to copy these two parameters in the config.yaml file.
Subsequent usage of this same token will work on the same IP range or even the same ASN. The point is to generate this token on a blocked IP as "unblocked" IP addresses seems to not generate a token valid for passing the checks on a blocked IP.

Documentation here is a bit outdated but I assume this is how it still works, just automated without the need to manually run their commands.

Absolutely baffling nobody has mentioned Invidious or Piped.

Use a public instance or self host your own. Pair it with Freetube and you can skip in-video sponsorships/ads.

While YouTube has been making it difficult for these services to stay alive they seem to alway work around them.

Unpopular opinion, if you’re going to use a Debian based distro you should just use Debian.

Yes, it is command-line/BASH heavy however, once you learn it it’ll make all the other Debian based distro’s even easier to manage. Only real difference is system directories are in different locations distro-to-distro.

Others mentioned A.I and data-collection however, you also have to think about all the different laws around the world, if a new law conflicts with their TOS they gotta update it to stay compliant.

This has been an issue for over 4 years. not sure why it seems to be neglected by the maintainers/contributors.

Edit: Maybe it was patched? I don’t have the time at the moment to dive deep into this topic, will try to get back to this later today.

Edit 2: briefly looking around seems like this persisted in 2023

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation released new Leger polling showing 55 per cent of Canadians think that stopping illegal gun smuggling is the most effective way to reduce gun crime.

“The poll shows that Canadians know the real problem is illegal gun smuggling, not firearms owned by licenced Canadian gun owners,” said Gage Haubrich, CTF Prairie Director. “Planning to spend potentially billions of dollars on a program that Canadians don’t think is effective is a waste of money.

“Law-enforcement experts are telling Ottawa to focus on smugglers instead of licenced gun owners and this poll shows Canadians agree with that commonsense reality.”

The federal government originally announced the gun ban and buyback scheme in 2020. The government has started collecting firearms from businesses, but the government has not yet taken a single gun from individual Canadian gun owners.

The Leger poll asked Canadians what they think is the most effective way to reduce gun crime. Results of the poll show:

  • 55 per cent say introducing tougher measures to stop the illegal smuggling of guns into Canada from the United States is most effective.
  • 26 per cent say banning the sale and ownership of many different makes and models of guns as well as using a government buyback program is the most effective.
  • Eight per cent say neither of these options.
  • 11 per cent don’t know.

These results echo what police organizations have been saying for years.

The National Police Federation, the union representing the RCMP, says Ottawa’s buyback “diverts extremely important personnel, resources, and funding away from addressing the more immediate and growing threat of criminal use of illegal firearms.”

“There is no evidence that gun bans are effective in reducing this violence, particularly when 85 per cent of guns seized by our members can be traced back to the United States,” said the Toronto Police Association.

The government said the buyback program would cost taxpayers $200 million in 2019. Just buying back the guns, not including administrative costs, could cost up to $756 million, according to the Parliamentary Budget Officer.

Since then, the government has banned hundreds of other models of firearms as well as accessories, increasing the potential cost to taxpayers.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has promised to “reinvigorate the implementation” of Ottawa’s gun ban and buyback program.

“Ordinary Canadians and the experts both know this policy isn’t going to make anyone safer so the government needs to stop wasting money on this scheme,” Haubrich said. “It’s time to listen to Canadians and scrap the gun ban and buyback.”

Ian Runkle, a firearm lawyer, raised more than $50,000 to file a case with the Supreme Court of Canada and challenge the government’s so-called “nullification” tactic to criminalize gun owners and confiscate our gear.

His fundraising campaign on GiveSendGo.com attracted $53,269 in donations as of 09 a.m. Toronto time today, exceeding the $40,000 goal.

Runkle: ‘I Need Your Help’

“I am going to the Supreme Court of Canada to fight for procedural fairness for gun owners,” Runkle said on X.com on May 13. “This is a critically important time and a critically important case. But I need your help:”

https://twitter.com/IanRunkle/status/1922410065274781766

Judges To Decide If Case Proceeds

After he files at the Supreme Court, Runkle will need to convince the judges to hear his case. They may refuse.

“In most cases, a party who wants to appeal the decision of a lower court must obtain permission, or leave to appeal, from the Court,” the court says on its website. “The Supreme Court will only hear cases that the judges consider to be of public importance.”

Criminalize and Confiscate Via ‘Nullification’

  • The Liberal Party of Canada and Royal Canadian Mounted Police invented the “nullification” tactic in 2020 to criminalize government-licensed firearm owners and confiscate many of their rifles and shotguns.

  • The RCMP has said that the firearm-registration certificates of individuals and businesses with many so-called “Restricted” rifles had been “nullified,” and refused to say who invented the “nullification” tactic, who ordered it, who executed it, what legal mechanism they used, and when.

  • Six cases in federal court and roughly 150 cases in provincial courts argued that “nullification” is unconstitutional, unlawful, unreasonable, or unjustified. Some judges agreed, but the challenges ultimately were unsuccessful.

Challenging ‘Nullification’

So far, it’s been an uphill battle, but I’m taking the matter to the Supreme Court of Canada, asking them for a ruling on whether the “nullification” that the government issued to thousands of Canadian gun owners was in fact a “revocation”. Nullification is a term that is not in the law anywhere, and appears to have been created to avoid the obligation to Canadian gun owners to provide reasons and an opportunity to challenge their decisions.

Your donations go directly to legal fees to help me file the documents necessary. I will be keeping costs down by doing much of the writing myself, but the costs will still be higher than I can bear on my own

Please donate to support firearms owners across the country who have done nothing wrong and don’t deserve to have their property confiscated: https://www.givesendgo.com/sccfirearms?openShareModal=true

Canada’s latest firearms restrictions have forced Regina’s Wes Stevens to travel unarmed to the 2025 World Shoot.

Stevens is one of four Canadians to qualify for the International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC) event slated for May 19-24 in Znojmo, Czechia, where a recent Canadian government policy prohibiting possession of their guns has forced the Canucks to rent pistol-calibre carbines from an American manufacturer.

“It was kind of a kick in the teeth,” said Stevens, 36. “When last fall rolled around I ordered a brand-new gun because I was representing Team Canada. So I was gonna go all out and build one with everything I wanted.

“I needed a backup anyway, so I bought a base gun and wanted this hand guard, this trigger, these grips, this optic. Everything was in the mail and then the government put in all these restrictions.”

Stevens quickly cancelled his order and obediently locked up his older gun, a Freedom Ordnance FX-9 (millimetre), because it was added to the federal government’s list of prohibited weapons in December. Stevens can’t practise with it, sell it, give it away, travel with it or even dispose of it, he said, until the government decides what should be done with the prohibited weapons.

“All restricted firearms, which would be your shorter long-guns and handguns, they were registered already from when you bought them at the gun store,” said Stevens. “There are also storage regulations. They have to be unloaded and stored separately from the (ammunition). They have to be locked up. It’s not that bad; you get a safe.

“When (the federal government) enacted a new ban, the disappointing part is they kind of circumvented the whole legislative process by an OIC (order-in-council), which was like using emergency powers to freeze the sale, transfer and use of all these firearms. They sold it by saying they’re only affecting the bad guns and they’re not affecting any kind of sports shooters. That’s just not been the case. We are 100 per cent affected by all this and it’s killed certain disciplines. We’re trying to grow in certain areas but it’s trending as a decline.”

Stevens said Canadian practical shooters are attempting to meet with the new federal government to see if it would be willing to loosen restrictions on guns used for competitions, which were put in place when Justin Trudeau was the prime minister. Some handguns can still be used in competitions provided they’re registered by their users, but the re-sale of those guns is prohibited.

The government policy was intended to strengthen Canada’s gun laws and, according to Public Safety Canada, keep the country safer by criminalizing the possession of certain firearms.

Pistol-calibre carbines can shoot four bullets in one second; most are placed within a chassis that is extended with a butt stock, which makes them easier to aim and rapid-fire.

The initial prohibition on “assault-style firearms” came May 1, 2020, making it a Criminal Code offence to possess any variation of nine listed models, including AR-15 and M-16 rifles, mainly semi-automatic weapons and two types of pistols. Another 324 specific models were added in December.

According to the subsequent media release from Public Safety Canada: “The Government of Canada has taken further strong steps to tackle gun crime and to uphold its commitment to keep cities and communities safe.

“As part of its comprehensive approach, on December 5, 2024, the Government announced the prohibition of more military style assault-style firearms. Accompanying the prohibition is an amnesty order, which expires on October 30, 2025, that protects businesses and owners while they come into compliance with the law.”

Financial compensation would be provided to companies and individuals for their guns after a collection plan was put in place, according to the media release. Stevens said he has not been told about the government’s collection plans, so his “handful of guns” are safely locked away.

“Over 19,000 non-restricted makes and models, equating to over 127,000 variations of firearms, remain available for hunting and sport shooting in Canada,” according to Public Safety Canada.

Long story short, my bank/credit-union doesn’t support debit-visa and the only way I can make online payments through my bank account is via PayPal.

PayPal is a pain in the ass to work with and I would like to use Privacy.com’s virtual debit/credit cards however, they lack support for banks/credit-unions outside the US.

Note: I like to use my CC as less as possible hence why I use my bank for majority of my online payments.

"Today's Liberal government announcement is as deceitful and deceptive as every other action they've taken on the firearm file. Since 2020, the Liberals have insisted that their relentless targeting of exclusively licensed gun owners has had no effect on hunting or sport shooting. This is clearly and entirely false. In fact licensed gun owners are the only group that have been targeted by everything the Liberals have done on guns.

Since 2020, the Liberals have insisted that there are innumerable replacements for the firearms they were banning. The Prime Minister himself even announced on CTV that inevitably the Liberals will have to ban some firearms that license gun owners have been using for hunting, but they can simply replace those firearms with others that are not on the list.

And as predicted, almost every year since then, they have generated lists of the firearms that Canadians have spent untold sums of their own resources replacing their banned firearms, all the while trusting the government at its word. The Liberals have gleefully and overtly enjoyed the misplaced trust of gun owners and the damage they have caused them.

The CCFR cannot adequately condemn the Liberals, the NDP, and the Bloc Quebecois for supporting this treatment of only those in our country who follow the rules to the letter. It is yet another betrayal and a black mark on Canada's history, its relationship with the government, and its relationship with the RCMP. The conduct of all the above towards law-abiding, hard-working citizens is nauseating and immoral.

It should not be overlooked that while the government is damaging the above-mentioned relationships beyond repair, gun toting criminals are still kicking in Canadian doors and letting bullets fly on Canadian streets. Liberals haven't lifted a finger to stop this.

The CCFR is laser focused on fighting these measures without end. We will not rest until these measures are repealed and those who show such contempt to society's most trusted citizens are held accountable for their actions."

Good afternoon y'all.

I recently installed Steam on a laptop running a fresh install of Debian 12 & KDE Plasma. I've done this dance numerous times on other hardware however, this time when installing games through Steam they hang at 100% Downloaded & Installed and only complete when i pause them, one occasion two games simply wouldn't install and took me a full day fighting with Steam to finish them and clear the queue.

Steam can't seem to move files between drives (note: one drive is an SSD and the other is an HDD) or uninstall files and i assumed this was a permissions issue at first however, comparing the directory permissions from the laptop to my desktop (also running Debian 12 & KDE Plasma) i see nothing out of the ordinary.

Any suggestions are appreciated - Some things I've already tried.

  • Purged steam from the system (including ~/.steam)
  • Cleared 'Download Cache' in Steam settings
  • chown & chmod (777) the common directories (~/.steam/steamapps/common)
  • Waited numerous hours assuming the HDD was ridiculously slow - moving/deleting files in the CLi shell works without issue!
  • Tried different download regions/countries

So recently I just come across Earlyoom and it has completely resolved my desktop crashing and better handles my memory, I was wondering if there is any other software that I’m missing that could potentially improve my systems resource handling?

Distro = Debian 12, KDE Plasma 5

Please post all your Gun Politics or Ban-related ideas, initiatives, comments, suggestions, news articles, and recommendations in this thread.

First and foremost, this is a Canadian Gun community, so keep it at least decently related to both of those things. Just because an election is coming up, doesnt make any and all canadian politics fair game. While these threads are typically looser about off-topic posting, there is no need for personal attacks and flamewars.

Credible sources providing new information will of course be fine to post regularily, but as time passes we may start sending new post talking about old news here. To prevent the main community being flooded with dozens of similar threads, text posts complaining about/asking about/chatting about the OIC will also likely be sent here.

This normally runs every month, but we will try having it repost a new thread every 14 days for now.
