how are some people still hypnotized to believe this man is a genius? GOD i will forever resent the media for glazing this man for 15 yrs and convincing the public that he's anything more than a trust fund baby who could by companies and play pretend.

Counterpoint: There still is too little activity within communities that aren't tech related for me to say that it's the perfect size. I think we still need a good number of non-tech focused users here. Also, the jokes are stale, but reddit has that issue too.

I like this. I hope it starts conversations. Does anyone know if there are good alternatives to Discord?

I was excited to see this article written on the verge but then I read it. Seems like they are only interested in what the fediverse can do now that Threads is getting in and sticking their foot in the door. It's likely they needed Meta as a corporation to validate federation as something with real potential. We need to be highly critical about the entities who just see this as another way to make money off our data

Usually the fall is mild but we've already gotten a few nights of frost. Brought in my outside plants in a hurry but now I need to do some prep for the lower light and colder conditions.

Although I do have some plant lights and just bought some newer ones that will be here soon, I'd love to know what other folks do to prep houseplants for their indoor lives.

My zz plant was doing okay. Wasn't growing as quickly as other describe despite living outside in a shady but bright part of my deck in NC USA. Should be getting plenty light and is protected from rain. Then this morning I find it like this. Each stem has a soft brown spot at the base and has fallen over. I cut them off and put them in a glass jar of water until I know what to do with the cuttings. I quickly checked the roots and everything looks and smells normal so I put it back in the soil.

The soil is a cactus mix with extra perlite added for drainage. So what could have caused this sudden change? And what is the best way to propagete zz plant cuttings? I have 4 or 5 so I think I may experiment with water propagtion and perlite propagation.

I've been keeping plants for about 5 years and have not bought any meters to track and test light, moisture, temp, ph, and all that. Are these a necessity? I am starting to think that I need these tools to ever get some of my pants to thrive in my dark home which gets pretty cold in the winter. What do y'all think?

Self watering pots have a lot of downsides, but I find myself with several decorative plastic ones that I want to find a use for. What sort of plants thrive in these pots? What have you had luck with?

This makes no sense to me. Did they provide a reason for choosing Discord of all things? What was wrong with making announcements on Lemmy? Why wouldn't they choose to make announcements in another federated format in addition and not instead of lemmy? Like, I'm not super tech savvy but I'm sure they could set up an RSS-like feed to send out alerts? IDK

I wish people would realize that humans only got to where we are because we are a COMMUNAL species. We developed complex language and tool usage BECAUSE we work together. Being "off the grid" is usually isolationist and therefore extremely dangerous. We need community in order to develop and manage the resources we need to survive.

I think I understand why this is bad, but I am not confident in my technical understanding of the mechanics here. Will appreciate an explainer :)

looks like rendering adblockers extensions obsolete with manifest-v3 was not enough so now they try to implement DRM into the browser giving the ability to any website to refuse traffic to you if you don't run a complaint browser ( cough...firefox )

here is an article in hacker news since i'm sure they can explain this to you better than i.

and also some github docs

I have recently tried a water cream for the first time and I really like it. It's light but does really seem to hydrate my problematic skin. For me, the value is not feeling weighed down and oily, especially with this summer being so hot. But since water creams seem to be a new product (am I wrong on this?), I am wondering if this is a fad. Should I be stocking up on my new favorite cream, or is this here to stay?

old leadership of the union had sketchy connections. doesn't have anything to do with the workers today and I'd hope no one is persuaded against supporting the strike due to that stuff. Here's a good article from a trusted source that's been reporting on this consistently. https://therealnews.com/teamsters-union-freight-contract-truckers

Your second recommendation won't work for everyone. For me, when I don't have the time or energy to cook I am more likely to order unhealthy food or get take out. It helped me a lot to have easy fast healthy options at home. Frozen veggies can be thrown in the oven and then dusted with a really good spice mix. Sandwich with good whole grain bread and lean meats. Once I learned to expect at least 2 "I give up" nights a week, I was able to finally lose a few pounds.

No. ? They said men should be able to wear clothes that's more comfortable without the feeling weird about it

I'm a woman and I wish I didnt have to "look cute" every day. Sometimes you just want to wear a shirt, pants, sneakers, and a ball cap. But for some reason that would be weird even tho the guys on my office dress like that every day. We're just talking about these weird unwritten rules.

[-] [email protected] 16 points 2 years ago

I agree. There should be a turn back to the robe-like garments that are used by everyone in certain cultures. It's comfy and it looks regal as fuck. And with the heat waves we've been getting we are gonna have to adapt to our environment where we can

In addition to everything everyone here said I want to add this; don't underestimate the value in adding new benin topics to her feel. Does she like cooking, gardening, diy, art content? Find a playlist from a creator and let it auto play. The algorithm will pick it up and start to recommend that creator and others like it. You just need to "confuse" the algorithm so it starts to cater to different interests. I wish there was a way to block or mute entire subjects on their. We need to protect our parents from this mess.

Worm Composting Game (wormfarmguru.com)

This is a simple game but it's challenging! If you are thinking about starting a worm bin but you're not sure if you understand the guidelines, maybe this game can help. I've been maintaining a bin for about 8 months but I keep losing at this game pretty quickly lol

Up until a few weeks ago, our spring had been pretty cool so I put off getting my okra seeds started. Then I forgot about it and now I worry that I am too late to plant some okra! I've never grown it before but I know they are sun and heat lovers. I should have enough of that, but I worry that since it can take 3 months for them to fruit I've missed out on peak growing time.

I'm still going to try, but is there anything I should do to help speed it along? I'm soaking the seeds right now. I've seen that some people scrap the outer shell with sandpaper, anyone have experience doing this? I plan to plant these in deep 5 gal buckets so I can ensure they can always be in the sunniest spot. Any other ideas?!

I support this. How do we make it happen?

(Speaking from a USA perspective) How do we start to convince people that building and maintaining housing should be funded through public funds and the decisions should be made by the public? It's hard to educate the well-meaning general public to be skeptical of the developers that roll into town and claim to be able to build affordable housing. The programs our cities often rely on aren't meeting the reality of what our communities need in terms of long-term pricing, quality of housing, and related resources. What do we do?

prepping for gravel (lemmy.world)
submitted 2 years ago by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

I am planning on killing my lawn and filling the area with raised beds with gravel in between the beds. I will be using the sheet mulching strategy to kill the grass. I've used this strategy successfully to prep for my existing beds. My question is this: should I put a layer of anti weed tarp before installing the gravel, or should the sheet mulching do enough to prevent weeds?
