Why would I bother debating with a bot regardless of whether I agree or disagree with their opinion? It’s a bot. It repeats what it’s programmed to and my opinion on the validity of it is unimportant.

AI can fuck off regardless of whether it’s programmed to parrot things I like or dislike.

The above account is a bot created 2 hours ago posing as a human. Every comment, 17 so far, has been a paragraph or two long. Uses sentence structure commonly used by AI.

[-] cannedtuna@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Account less than 4 hours old, posting articles like this, AI fluff, and pro musk articles.

Bet this account self deletes in a couple hours.

[-] cannedtuna@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Yeah there’s someone on this site who makes throwaway accounts constantly. They create accounts, post a bunch of stuff in comics and news communities, then self deletes after a couple hours before they can be banned.

Any time someone calls them out on it they use their throwaway accounts to go through your recent history and downvote everything you post. They also like to make impersonation accounts to spam from.

There’s a couple threads calling this shit out here in c/comicstrips and c/support

I posted this comment in the original thread, but I’m also going to post it here for visibility for people interested in this.

404 Media and the EFF have been covering this pretty extensively.

404 just published a zine about ICE Surveillance, which can be found here printable in both English and Spanish.

404 also published the user manual for ICE’s database app, ELITE, which lets them find people to abduct which can be found here and a detailed article talking about it can be read here

In another article 404 talks about ICE’s two other tools, Tangles and Webloc, which ICE uses to track the locations of cellphones and determine the place of work or residence of the owner without a warrant. This can be used for example to track people who show up to protests and find out who they are and where they live. Read here

There’s also an article on how Flock cameras work if your interested, found here on 404

The Electronic Frontier Foundation put out a tool last year, Rayhunter, which aims to detect and record the use of cell-site simulators, or Stingrays, aka IMSI catchers. CSS’s mimic cell towers to spy on cell phones. The goal of the tool is to record and document the usage of these devices and report it to groups like the EFF.

The EFF also has a whole Field Guide to Police Surveillance which covers street-level surveillance tech law enforcement uses, and how they work.

On a side note: WIRED put out an article on How to Film ICE.

And The Verge did a review of the Best Gas Masks to buy.

You already know they won’t, and even if they do, a malfunction will always be the reason the footage was lost, unless it helps them track and arrest protestors.

Hmmm. You weren’t kidding. Account is 2 years and 7 months old and just woke up today like some kinda sleeper agent.

Hasn’t upvoted shit till today, his own post, and his first 3 posts and 1 comment are today.

Not even a lurker, just an account made for… what, this? Sharing sketchy pdf links? Maybe to track who downloads or clicks, or to share something more insidious? Or idk..

Lemmy seems to be overrun by post and ditch throwaway accounts right now posting controversial or divisive content. Because these accounts are created, post, and self delete their accounts and repeat you can't simply just block these users. This is happening on multiple instances and communities too so you also can't just filter out the offending instance.

Please add a filter for content posted by new accounts. Lemmy already has a New Account Highlightenator feature, which is helpful (tho sometimes the baby face tag gets pushed off screen if the username is long when Always Show Author is turned on), but I'd like to just not see anything from these accounts. Not a perfect solution, but could be helpful.

Edit: Looks like the bot people don't like this idea since it's already being downvoted by accounts that no longer exist.

Edit 2: Just watching them come in. Up to 8 now and not one of these accounts exist any longer. Just proving my point that they really don't want to be filtered out.
