Just be careful not to push things so hard you alienate people!

I find its most productive to share my joy or passion for things (like the Fediverse), and look for ways to relate those things to their interests and values, and if they get interested that's awesome!

Don't treat it as a failure if they don't they don't immediately switch. Don't pressure them. Don't try to make them switch while pretending you're just excited about it (people can tell when the subtext is that you want them to do something)

Share your joy, and if it seems like they have any interest or can connect with the appeal of it, ask them if you can set up an account with/for them! Not to try and make them drop Facebook, but to share why you care about this thing and participate in it together :)

That being said, it will of course depend a lot on the nature of your relationship with people. Your relationship with your mom might be such that she'd happily switch if she mostly just uses facebook to keep up with you and would be receptive to doing that a different way. And it's not necessarily bad to talk about why meta/facebook sucks, just be mindful of conveying preachyness, or making people feel overly presured to do what you'd like

Sick, I've been checking in on this project periodically

Right now I'm using GNOME and antimicroX for mouse control via a gamepad quite happily, but the option of a dedicated interface for a controller would be rad!!

My understanding has always been that doctors shouldn't share peoples private health information with law enforcement either...

Like if the cops suspect you of a crime or planning a crime, they can't just go to your therapist and ask them what you talk about in your sessions...

I have no expertise but that has always been something I thought was protected. Maybe it's changed if it's demographic and personal experience rather than medical...? I have no idea

While I understand your argument that their ideology is defined in large parts by other factors than political alignment, I do see them talk about those kinds of things, specially through the lens of demanding communism as a resolution to those problems, or calling for the abolishment of the class that facilitates those problems 😅

Yeahhh, that seems like a significant oversight... That should really at least be an option.

I appreciate the accurate and incredibly sad understanding of radicalization

During the recording of the podcast The Show People, Fry, who previously narrated all seven Harry Potter audiobooks, said: "She has been radicalised I fear and it maybe she has been radicalised by TERFs, but also by the vitriol that is thrown at her.”

As reported by The Daily Mail, Fry continued: “It is unhelpful and only hardens her and will only continue to harden her I am afraid. I am not saying that she not be called out when she says things that are really cruel, wrong and mocking. She seems to be a lost cause for us.”

“I am sorry because I always liked her company,” he added. “I found her charming, funny and interesting and then this thing happened, and it completely altered the way she talks and engages with the world now.”

He continued by saying that Rowling’s “contemptuous” comments “add to a terribly distressing time for trans people.”

It saddens me to hear it sounds he has lost a friend- watching someone descend into radialization on a personal level is a distressing thing :(

I know exactly nothing about the green party but like Jesus fuck you'd think leftists would have learned that's an important word to stop diluting given many of us are living under a system slipping into actual full blown fascism and it's an increasingly big problem globally

Its so painfully harmful to leftist causes to go around accusing your fellow leftists of being a nazi for not being your exact flavor of left. We all need to cut that shit out and grow some emotional and interpersonal maturity.

A great video on practical resistance to Nazi organizing! It's less than 5 minutes long and super simple :)

Had a really good time, I'm really glad we made signs :)

I'm not awake during the day generally so I'm kinda thinking now, maybe a way I can contribute is making signs for people to pass out or give away as a way I can contribute

There were people out handing out cookies and donuts which was pretty cool too :)

Didn't get any pictures cause I turned my phone off but a ton of people were filming as they drove by. We expected it so be a small location (we didn't go to the main one in our area) but there ended a lot of people there

Getting everyone to honk was honestly really fucking fun 😅 I waved at every car, and a couple of guys on motorcycles- getting one of the motorcycles to wave back was a highlight. There were some big moving trucks that honked, some little kids who waved from back seats, overall had a blast

I was able to build some trust and now it's extremely friendly, I live in an apartment complex with no pet doors in central NC, should I bring it inside and see if it's chipped in the morning? I don't wanna leave it outside if it might have no home, but I don't wanna steal someone's cat

It looks like an adolescent or a late kitten? The collar has nothing on it, it's just a piece of white flexible plastic with a buckle...

Removed the "HELP" since people in the other thread were able to help me figure out that I should leave it be outside

Listen to Wikipedia (listen.hatnote.com)
submitted 1 month ago by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

Listen to the sound of Wikipedia's recent changes feed. Bells indicate additions and string plucks indicate subtractions. Pitch changes according to the size of the edit; the larger the edit, the deeper the note. Green circles show edits from unregistered contributors, and purple circles mark edits performed by automated bots. You may see announcements for new users as they join the site, punctuated by a string swell. You can welcome him or her by clicking the blue banner and adding a note on their talk page.

I adore this site. I learned about it from the internet is beautiful sub eons ago and I still come back to it when I want background noise but all my options feel like too specific of a sound. Its just a lovely little mix of chimes and swells and you can toggle which languages to include to tune how frequent you want them to be

The fediverse is small, and thats both a blessing and a curse - one of its several blessings is that in a smaller space we all individually have a bigger impact on what the culture of this space is like.

On this comm (and on lemmy broadly) there's a lot of discussion about how to grow the fediverse, what to improve, but an easy thing you can do for the fediverse is right in front of us-

  • Be kind

  • Ask people what they think, and why

  • Approach folks you disagree with with curiosity rather than hostility (EDIT: no, this is not specifically referring to Nazis. I get it, they're the first thing that comes to mind. I'm not telling you to approve of Nazis I'm just saying be kind to your fellow lemmites)

  • Engage sincerely

  • Ask yourself if there's something nice you can say

  • Make this small space worth being in

A platform lives or dies by what's available on said platform and often we have this conversation in the context of "content" or posts - and we may never have as much content as reddit does. But content and posts aren't the only thing this kind of platform offers- it also offers people. It offers community, and human interaction.

Culture and community is lemmy and the fediverse's biggest differentiator, and we all have a role to play in shaping the culture of this space.

The biggest thing you can do to help the fediverse is make it a place worth being.

I quite like the new adaita font, though it has a bit less character than that new font open suse published a little while back.

But something more neutral isn't strictly a bad thing for an interface font I suppose

Hope y'all are having a good day :)
