In that same period, Bartkus’ rhetoric on alternative social media sites was dark. “I would not acknowledge reproduction as a human right, but instead as a form of rape,” IndictEvolution wrote on Lemmy.World in July 2023. “I am also not bothered by infanticide as long as it is done humanely...”

Sadly i think this is an incident of the bomber and victim of abuse not being able to see reality beyond his experience of it.

He likely suffered at the hands of his father and/or mother and saw their ages/who they were when they had him and projected that out into the world that people shouldn't be having children.

If you have kids, what they see at home, unless they grow and meditate alot is what they will believe is normal in the world.

This is common friggin sense, but apparently not behavior, but people gotta be good to their kids. Yikes.

Holy Shit. What a dumbass.

Is other people’s choice to have kids or not really the hill you want to die on??

Well anyways, if this article is legit, looks like we’ll have a couple FBI agents joining us here. Welcome!

[-] [email protected] 43 points 1 week ago

Ugh, now I have to add "in Minecraft" to all my posts.

Look at politics since USA founding. Nathaniel Hawthorne warned us. Buddha, Jesus, Rumi, others taught unity, with self and others and vexed the greedy politicians and religious power structures that propped them up, telling us wealth is to be shared, and other teachings that ended up stripped from religiopolotical structures because they threaten those power structures.

Look at politics since USA founding.

look at the way the natives were treated, the overall general thing that you could say about the north american natives is that they respected each others existence and life. And for the most part believed in respect for nature. The Conquistadors were monsters and brought monstrous behavior that we still deal with today. Trump is just following in Jackson's steps trying to displace more people with native blood. Just the new displacement is happening to those with blood from the south

They're human. The best and worst behaviors of human beings are human behaviors, and we can mitigate or exacerbate that. Society needs to look in the mirror and decide whether we want to be the better or worst collective selves. Our politicians reflect back to us our collective choice. It took a long time to get here. If we don't like where we are, we'd better collectively get busy working on ourselves and setting better examples. Then we may put a healthier reflection of ourselves in leadership positions.

Finally some exposure for Lemmy in the news.

[-] [email protected] 46 points 1 week ago
[-] [email protected] 40 points 1 week ago

Quoting the article

"I’m glad I’m an extremist,” he wrote. “Makes me WAY less tethered to this turd of a planet.

Very very screwed up. People like him are dangerous to society.

[-] [email protected] 22 points 1 week ago

He could have offed himself instead of harming others then

[-] [email protected] 19 points 1 week ago

thankfully he was the only death

Fucked up if true. I don't like kids and I'd never have any myself but it's fucked up to deprive others of that choice, especially those misfortunate enough to be infertile against their wishes, and to do so by murder of innocent souls.

[-] [email protected] 23 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

It was a suicide. That's all. The rest of the stuff drawn from his philosophy was what he used to rationalize his own suicide to himself. It wasn't the actual reason he killed himself, it was just how he motivated himself to go through with it.

[-] [email protected] 11 points 1 week ago

This puts it better than what I was suppose to write which was "what came first? the desire to blow shit up, or 'the cause'?".

I do find it odd that lemmy's first major insident isn't from .ml or any other Tankie instance, it's .world.

Does speak to the mismanagement of the moderation. This dude was fucked up in the head and only taken care of after this terrorist incident. You can call out moderators and be banned, you can be a dickhead edge lord who would later be a terrorist, and never get touched until the mods deal with it after.

Keep in mind that Lemmy.world has almost the same amount of monthly active users as the top 7 other Lemmy instances combined (according to FediDB). It's statistically very likely that they're from there.

[-] [email protected] 21 points 1 week ago

Correct, but for an instance that tried to stop posts about Luigi, has wanted people to "Debate" flat world and transphobia, they just didn't do anything with the communities that lead to this attempted attack.

Meanwhile I know people who proved a mod wrong and got banned, and the mod hasn't been punished.

Any link for this incident? Probably a report on [email protected] ?

Yeah. It’s kind of like saying you’re suprised rape happens more often in India than Iceland. (population differences distort probabilities).

[-] [email protected] 11 points 1 week ago

He was on Lemmy for a short time two years ago.

[-] [email protected] 16 points 1 week ago

He was much more active, and posted on the .world antinatalist fourm. The admins have removed posts/comments 3 days ago before the headlines rolled out.

If you check what a few members have posted (I'll try to gather what I can, I hate people who say something and then go "well google you dingus, and I hate being a hypocrite even more), he was active for a while beyond those 2 years, telling people some horrid shit.

I genuinely will try to gather what I can whenever I put on my biohazard suit and check some instances.

So this guy is 25, and his dad is 75. Hm.

Hasn’t talked to his dad in a decade. Dad did stalk him out on Instagram to cyber bully him about 4 years ago, though. Hmm.

Mom’s age isn’t listed here, but she’s 63. 12 years younger. Honestly was expecting a larger age gap. Same last name as Sophie. Hmmm.

The father: Despite my past history of both alleged and documented abuse, restraining orders, estranged family, and seemingly multiple people in my orbit that have expressed a hatred for living, I want you all to know I consider myself to be a loving father and a good person.

[-] [email protected] 9 points 1 week ago

The article allows the dad to speak in his own defense, then ever so casually sprinkles in bits of evidence that dad was a shitbag that likely led to his instability. It's art.

His son, he said, ended up graduating with honors from Yucca Valley High School. Richard Bartkus did not attend the graduation.

How did they connect the user to this account though? Post history doesnt show anything that could lead to it.

Using the same username is not proof they're the same person online.

[-] [email protected] 25 points 1 week ago

they probably have access to his electronics and web history

he lived with his mother and sister. I am sure he left a logged in system somewhere

[-] [email protected] 15 points 1 week ago

Likely through a post on another platform, reused username, or an email address and tying it back to the account.

[-] [email protected] 10 points 1 week ago

Same username as his YouTube channel

[-] [email protected] 9 points 1 week ago

Warrant served to lemmy.world to get IPs? (Perhaps a gag order?)

I'm gonna assume the perp isn't in a mental state to care about using VPNs or Tor

transphobes continue to be weird losers, shocking

[-] [email protected] 38 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Isn't that him expressing his support of "trans stuff"? Still, quite a wild statement to "despise nature" though.

[-] [email protected] 55 points 1 week ago

An edgelord approving of "trans stuff" because he sees it as an affront to nature, but good because he "despises nature". if that's what "support" sounds like I don't want it.

[-] [email protected] 25 points 1 week ago

Yeah, his comment history definitely shows a very fucked up way of thinking.

tbf i think he means bioessentialism, cause antinatalism is against the fact that it is "in our nature" to reproduce, therefore we should, and it's easy to conflate the two.

I do agree that he is an edgelord tho, and probably doesn't fully understand antinatalism in its full depth

Still, quite a wild statement to “despise nature” though.

I think it requires privilege not to despise nature.

[-] [email protected] 17 points 1 week ago

Idk why but I feel bad for this dude. Like maybe if a couple things had gone differently in his life he wouldn't have ended up doing this. Like if this dude had been born a bit earlier before the Internet could connect him to bizarre and radical views like this, he probably would have been fine. Anyway, that kind of explains a bunch of comments I saw on another post about this bombing defending the bomber, they were probably part of the same sublemmy that radicalized him.

[-] [email protected] 9 points 1 week ago

I mean, ACEs probably had a lot to do with it. But to our power structure, things like this is a small price to pay, if it accumulates even more wealth in the accounts of the already obscenely wealthy sociopaths running the planet.

Also, if your states' feds weren't already here (they were), they are now, in droves.

In those public postings, Bartkus argued that procreation without consent of the unborn is unethical and unjustifiable in a world struggling with environmental harm, violence and overpopulation.

Such a strange paradox.

[-] [email protected] 22 points 1 week ago

How do they propose to obtain the consent of the unborn?

[-] [email protected] 9 points 1 week ago

He's an antinatalist!

[-] [email protected] 8 points 1 week ago

Exactly. And realistically, they would need to be at least a teenager before they would truly understand what they're accepting.

People on this thread are quick to blame "society" for his actions, which is fair. But I'd like to point out that social media is a huge part of society in the modern world.
Lemmy has a pattern of edgy people advocating for violence against their political and ideological opponents. That culture can radicalize people, and push already radicalized people over the edge, and when that happens it usually looks less like Luigi and more like this.
You just gotta ask yourself if this is behavior you want to encourage, deliberately or no.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 5 days ago

Yeah, Lemmy is a bit wack. I've seen antinatalists on here. Gross.

[-] [email protected] 12 points 1 week ago

We've got to do something about these mods, folks.

[-] [email protected] 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Expect more as the stressors in society increase

This is the result of people feeling hopeless in a dying world

Instead of fixing the domestic abuse, economy, and environmental issues that led to this we will increase spending on our police state to kill anyone who dissents.

We can clutch pearls all day about how horrible this 25 year old is, but we would be doing the same in his situation because the things he experienced lead people there.

Expect these kinds of things to happen more
