Independent experts with the United Nations Human Rights Council say an Israeli law allowing children as young as 12 to be sentenced to life in prison could violate the Convention on the Rights of the Child, an international agreement Israel ratified in October 1991.

“UN experts express alarm at two new Israeli terrorism laws that permit life imprisonment for 12-year-olds and arbitrary suspension of child welfare payments, violating the human rights of Palestinian children,” they said in a social media post.

The group of legal experts said the Knesset passed an amendment to an existing law in November 2024 allowing courts to sentence children as young as 12 to life in prison “if convicted of murder or attempted murder classified as a ‘terror act'” or if “the act was performed as part of the operations of a terrorist organization and aimed at advancing its objectives”.

Israeli military law in the occupied West Bank already permits Israeli authorities to imprison Palestinian children as young as 12 years old, the experts noted.

The AIs at Sesame are able to hold eloquent and free-flowing conversations about just about anything, but the second you mention the Palestinian genocide they become very evasive, offering generic platitudes about "it's complicated" and "pain on all sides" and "nuance is required", and refusing to confirm anything that seems to hold Israel at fault for the genocide -- even publicly available information "can't be verified", according to Sesame.

It also seems to block users from saving conversations that pertain specifically to Palestine, but everything else seems A-OK to save and review.

The shooting of Robert Dotson, 52, in the northwestern New Mexico city of Farmington prompted a civil lawsuit by his family members, though public prosecutors found there was no basis to pursue criminal charges against officers after a review of events. The suit alleged that the family was deprived of its civil rights and officers acted unreasonably.

Hearing a knock at the door late on April 5, 2023, Dotson put on a robe, went downstairs and grabbed a handgun before answering. Police outside shined a flashlight as Dotson appeared and raised the firearm before three police officers opened fire, killing him. Dotson did not shoot.

“Ultimately, given the significant threat Dotson posed when he pointed his firearm at officers ... the immediacy of that threat, the proximity between Dotson and the defendant officers, and considering that the events unfolded in only a few seconds, the court finds that the defendant officers reasonably applied deadly force,” U.S. District Court Judge Matthew Garcia said in a written court opinion.

How are they going to enforce this? Can’t you just say you have one of the underlying conditions?

During the pandemic I kept hearing, “the gov shouldn’t tell us to wear masks” and “the gov shouldn’t mandate basic healthcare choices.” A handful of years later we won’t even be able to decide for ourselves whether or not to take basic precautions.

The number of white nationalist, hate and anti-government extremist groups in the US has dropped not because of their declining influence, but because many of their proponents feel their beliefs have become normalized in government and mainstream society, according to a new report by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).

The SPLC’s annual Year in Hate and Extremism report, published on Thursday, said it documented 1,371 hate and extremist groups across the country in 2024, down from 1,430 groups in 2023.

These groups use “political, communication, violent, and online tactics to build strategies and training infrastructure to divide the country, demoralize people, and dismantle democracy”, the non-profit group said.

The 5% drop in hate and extremist groups in 2024 can be attributed to the fact that many feel a lesser sense of urgency to organize, because their beliefs have infiltrated politics, education and society in general, according to the report.
