A big welcome to everyone that has joined these past few weeks, we're all very excited to have you joining us! You'll find that people are more than happy to help you get started and learn how to use the site.

If you feel up for it, go ahead and make a post in this community introducing yourself, asking questions, or asking about topics that you want to find communities for. This community is intended for this purpose!

We have put together some resources to help new users get started.

You can also read:

These guides were published very recently, and we will be updating them over time. If you find that something is confusing or missing, please let us know and we can improve them further.

Welcome to Lemmy :)

A few common issues:

"I'm not seeing all the content"

Lemmy allows you to filter out content based on the language, but some new users will set this incorrectly in their settings. Please see this post for help. You can also post in either this community, or [email protected] to ask for more help.

"I want to block posts with certain words"

It is possible to use uBlock Origin to do this in the web browser. See this post for detailed instructions.

Not new to Lemmy, just heard that this was a support community so I’m here!

I’ve been seeing a lot of folks share a lot of important, and insightful posts. That’s not how mine looks.

Lemmings, please give me communities that are filled with silly, low effort posts — I’d appreciate it!

Share blocklists? (lemmy.blahaj.zone)
submitted 2 weeks ago by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

Possibly another approach to my last post, but with wider scope - https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/post/25640154

Is it possible to share a blocklist of communities based on themes? I would find a non English language list very useful, but as I said in the previous post blocking an instance like *.de or *.nl means interrupting comments by users in an English post. Instance level blocking means people who speak multiple languages (and I am one myself) are hidden from me.

But if this were possible it could also be used to block communities for topics I have no interest in, such as sports or all the software I never use announcing update releases. It makes tuning my feed a chore and I think this would improve the experience for everyone's tastes.

https://lemmyverse.net/communities?order=active <- this one

I kinda always forget the link name and have to look it up.

Would also be cool to make it "more in your face" for everyone to undermine the sense of broad community and I think people at the more casual userbase end dont even know about that site!

Hi. Recently joined and wondering if this is possible. There are many instances with country codes or top level domains, naturally content there is in the relevant language. German in .de for example.

However many users in these instances speak English and participate in other communities.

Could I filter out posts from non English instances without then interrupting replies in comments because the user is blocked by instance?

Thank you.

How can I link to a Lemmy post in a way that another Lemmy user that can view the linked page without the "You must log in or sign in to vote or comment" message (when they are already logged in)?

And vice versa: how can I click on a Lemmy link and not get that problem?

The exclamation point format is this:

[[email protected]](/c/[email protected])

As an example, mentions should look like these:

[email protected]
[email protected]

This is especially relevant when promoting a new community in the aforementioned communities, as otherwise it's less convenient to visit and join your community. A standard link would take someone off-site to whichever site the community's on, instead of its copy on their home site.

Forgot to include this key point as I was writing and revising all this:
Include these mentions in your post bodies! Having it in the title of the post alone doesn't help, as it doesn't create any link to click or tap through.

p.s. when typing these mentions, the WebUI will try to provide suggestions to autocomplete, select the right one and it should do the trick. App interfaces will vary but should provide some method to do similar in their post/comment editors, either try typing the mention or looking for an exclamation point in the editor and following what the interface offers to help.

I am too new to privacy and only got FreeTube(PC) and NewPipe(phone) to run with alot of failures on better applications. Thats another problem Id need help with but primarily this post is about the feature included on this platform in the setting (screenshot).

Any idea how to get this to run that way?

I have now encountered this problem a couple times, that I wanted to look into what this and that c/community has to offer for thinkgs in my question, but there seems to be no way to search a c/community, or is there a way?

Back in the day, introducing video posts destroyed facebook, a friends chatter platform, slowly but surely. Same fate with instagram, a photography/memory platform, getting into reels and videos.

Now if I go to reddit once a month to check in what the vibe is since my "detox" I realized.

Its all designed to drain. Drain your energy, your free thought, your long term happiness. Like not even hyperbolic, this is really scary.

And we all know thanks to the c/reddit community here on lemmy: Its full of this hidden but omniprersent corpo shilling, ads and corpo censoring.

So far I see no difference.

Say I'm on the page of a community and I'd like to search for something within that /c.

Looking at the /c's page (in a PC web browser), I see no way to search that /c.

Instead, I have to:

  1. click on the search icon
  2. find the box titled "Community"
  3. click the down arrow at the end of that box
  4. start typing the name of the /c
  5. pick the right one out of several options
  6. and only then finally do my search

Surely there's an easier way?

If not within the existing interface, then maybe... some browser extension or CSS hack?

If there would "hypothetically" be an instance owner(like what even is that, just a guy or group having servers somewhere?) that censores in bad faith, could it do that to the communities on there too? Could they just take out certain communities or delete content on it, affect the responsive moderators, etc?

Like how do I know I'm not on a community dependent on u/spez filtering out everything about insurance for his corpo bros?

I hope my questins make sense

For those on smaller instances/sites, you may have to use Lemmyverse to find communities first due to how things work here.

As to how to check whether you're on a larger instance/site...Lemmyverse helps again, just switched to instance view. If you're along the top of the grid (or list), you're in a larger instance.

For those on larger instances/sites, chances are you're already connected to a variety of existing communities. Given that, it's better to search first, making sure search isn't set to Local but instead All, before jumping into creating one. If you want to be more thorough, use the above Lemmyverse link to double check that there's not another active community already out there.

All that said, if you do find another community and it's active, yet seems not to match the approach you'd like to take, then go for making a new community. However consider giving it a distinct name and/or sidebar info to make it clear how your community is intended to be different from any similar communities.

For those switching over from Reddit that are interested in this feature, there isn't a direct substitute for this with Lemmy right away. Instead you have to create a community and set it so only moderators (which will be you) can post, and everyone else can only comment.

The plus side to this approach, despite the initial hurdle, is that you can name the community however you like, give it a distinct icon and banner and so on.

First Day (lemmy.ca)

Greetings. I saw this on a post on Reddit and decided to give it a try. Northern Ontarian who is into photography, writing, traveling, spending time at camp, biking, skate skiing, guitar, carpentry, and gardening.
One question: Are there any unspoken rules about posting/responding on Lemmy?

Greetings Fellow Kids (soundcloud.com)
submitted 2 months ago by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

i r mad lad. I am a musician of mediocre talent, and a technology enthusiast. I self host most of the services I use on a daily basis. I am a staunch privacy advocate. For someone in my geriatric, boomer group, I don't fear technology, I embrace it knowing that technology can be a double edged sword, depending on how it's used...so we must use it wisely.

I've known about Lemmy, Mastadon, Matrix etc, for some time now, but decided that I would try it out after really becoming disenchanted with Reddit. So, here I am.

Where is a good place on Lemmy where one can rub elbows with other musicians? I've already found the SelfHost section and am now looking for producers both professional, and hobbyist like myself.

Regards

Hi all. I've had an account here for awhile, and I thought it was about time I wrote an introduction.

I'm a Canadian, born in the west, grew up in the east. Politically I lean left, some days more so than others. I'm a strong believer in social justice. I believe in Canada having a strong social safety net, including universal basic income. I'm happy to pay my taxes.

You can find me on Mastodon @RandomCanuck@[email protected]. Also on Friendica. I'm a redditor too, but I mostly just graze and rarely post.

I run a small consulting business with my wife, and we've been doing that since 2000. I cut my teeth designing automated test equipment, and then control systems for automated assembly systems.

I've been a computer user since 1980, including Apple II+, IIe, III, Wang 2200, TRS-80, Commodore PET, a hand built 6502 micro, along with various Wintel PCs, a Mac SE30, Performa, Mac II, various iMacs MacBook Pros, and a MacBook Air, and Raspberry Pi.

I'm a long time staffer to a pack of toy poodles, starting in 1994. I love motorcycles, fast cars, hiking, camping and canoeing. Sci-Fi fan, most recently of the Murderbot series and Cory Doctorow’s books. I also read a lot of mysteries, history, and philosophy. Agnostic religiously, scienctific philosophically. Systems thinker. Writer.
