Last month, we released split tunneling on Linux in Beta, and we’ve now added an ‘include’ mode as part of the latest release!

Thank you to everyone for helping us test and providing valuable feedback as we continue to improve our Linux app.

Here’s how to get the beta for:

✅ Debian

✅ Ubuntu

✅ Fedora

https://protonvpn.com/support/linux-beta

Please also note that:

The new Split Tunneling feature is not compatible with the Linux kernel 6.16, we are working on a fix. Until then, to use split tunneling, downgrade to an older kernel version.

Your existing Split Tunneling configuration will be reset on application start, the addition of the 'include' mode feature made this necessary. Stay safe,

Proton protects your digital life: your emails, files, and passwords. In an emergency, it may be critical that the people you trust can access this information securely.

Proton's Emergency Access Feature

With Emergency Access, you can designate up to five trusted contacts who can access your Proton Mail, Proton Drive, Proton Pass, and Proton VPN if the unexpected occurs.

How it works:

  • Choose up to 5 Proton users as emergency contacts.
  • Trusted contacts who make an access request can access your account after a set wait time. During the wait time, you can approve the request immediately or deny it. If you do nothing, the request will automatically be approved after the wait time.
  • You can revoke or modify access at any time.

Emergency access preserves end-to-end encryption.

This feature is now available with paid Proton plans.

If you want peace of mind and flexibility in critical situations, set up Emergency Access today and make sure your loved ones are never locked out of essential information.

Sorry for the absence, it has been a bit hectic! News from the Proton Team:

Hey everyone,

It’s finally here! Split Tunneling is officially rolling out in beta for Linux, starting with Fedora and Ubuntu (latest versions only).

This is an early release, and we’ll keep on making improvements together with your help. We wanted to get it out there for anyone who wants to test-drive it and help shape how it evolves.

What’s in this release:

  • Exclude mode only — you can pick apps to bypass the VPN
  • Fedora + Ubuntu support
  • Works only with the official Proton VPN Linux app

🔜 Coming soon:

  • Include mode — route only selected apps through the VPN
  • IP-based rules
  • Debian 12 support

⚠️ A few caveats:

  • You’ll need the latest version of our Linux app
  • Feature is available only for those on a paid plan
  • The feature won’t be available for (unofficial) Flatpak versions of our app, so please use our official installer from our website.
  • Bugs and limited functionality are expected (beta life)

Let us know how it works for you, and what you’d like to see next! We are going to keep making improvements and changes to this feature over time, so give us as much feedback as you can.

Stay safe,

Proton Team

Maybe I should've hopped the train way earlier, or maybe I'm just a whiny bitch, but I do NOT want to see pop-up ads on my paid service, especially for an even more expensive plan. Like dude, come on.

I am downloading a .deb file from https://proton.me/download/PassDesktop/linux/x64/ProtonPass.deb and running it on Debian 13 (with KDE desktop environment, X11) app launcher menu which has:

Program: proton-pass

Command-line arguments: %U

Always when i run it (after it has been completely shutdown, no tray area icon)

it asks for selecting theme, setting protection for automatic locking, downloading phone app. So it is very annoying. Happens long time for all previous Pass and Debian versions I have tried.

What to try to fix this?

Hey there. I'm having a lot of trouble with Proton VPN. I get disconnected frequently. I have speed issues as well. This started tonight Sept 9th around midnight EDT.

EDIT: Thanks guys. It seems it was on Proton's side of things. Maybe they were doing updates or something? I can't find any reports anywhere.

Turn off IPV6? (lemmy.world)
submitted 2 weeks ago by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

I appreciate that ProtonVPN offers ipv6 support for their linux client, however my home internet (Tmobile) doesn't work at all when ipv6 is turned on

So I have to turn it off via settings:

IPv6 Tunnels IPv6 traffic through the VPN. Can enhance compatibility with IPv6 networks.

My question is, does turning it off post any privacy risk, e.g. IPv6 leak? or compatibility issues in general?

Thanks!

Any idea what this is about? I doubt Proton has that many trackers, so I was thinking maybe the individual emails? But those would just be triggering when I click on links, which I thought Proton stripped anyways, and I wouldn't think /e/os would attribute those to Proton either.

Hey everyone! Proton Drive for Windows now lets you easily and effortlessly import your Google Photos library into a private, encrypted space only you can access.

Why move your photos to Proton Drive?

  • Keep your memories private and encrypted
  • Transfer your albums exactly as they are
  • Avoid AI using your photos for tracking or training
  • Take a step away from Big Tech - your photos belong to you, not algorithms

How to move from Google Photos to Proton Drive

  1. Export your photos using Google Takeout
  2. In the Proton Drive Windows app, go to Photos import
  3. Choose Import from Google Photos and import your photos and albums to Proton Drive

Also, it’s not just Google Photos. You can import pictures from any folder, USB stick, hard drive, or other cloud service, creating a complete, encrypted photo library.

Photo import is available now in the Proton Drive app for Windows.

Try it now: proton.me/drive

Find out more here: https://proton.me/blog/google-photos-import-windows

As always, we’d love to hear your thoughts. Stay safe, Proton Team

[... Lumo] is the least open "open" AI assistant that we have ever added to our index. One of our reasons for inclusion is an openness claim: a model provider that calls their system "open" or "open source" or a variation on that. Lumo is "open" in that sense (Proton calls it open source) but in no other way. Nothing about it is currently open. [...]

Update 2: After excruciating 20 hours or so I finally managed to download all my photos. I cancelled my subscription, shut down my account and wish you guys all the best!

Update: I assume Safari puts tabs in sleep mode after it doesn't detect activity. As long as I keep my screen unlocked and use Firefox, I can download files. Although, they're very slow since there is not an actual export option. In my opinion, Drive needs a lot of work and Proton needs to make it easier to export out of all their apps!

Sorry, I have to vent right now. I am really sad that I will probably lose my pictures of 2024. I have a Proton Drive subscription, but it's been giving me a lot synchronization problems. I won't go into detail on them, because I have already spent so much time with Support to find a solution. There just isn't any and it's unclear they will ever fix it.

So I decided to cancel my subscription on Proton Drive at least. Turns out it is practically impossible to download my media from Proton Drive. This is my sixth attempt downloading media and it keeps getting canceled close to the end. There is no other export option than to manually select media, download them through the browser and pray that it will finish.

I tried with 500 items, as support recommended me. It didn't work. So I worked my way down to 400, now to 300 and it keeps failing. I don't know how to get my pictures away from this terrible Drive app. It's not doable to work in very small batches. I don't have this time on hand and Proton can't offer any solution either. I cannot even downgrade my subscription if it's using up more than the 15GB storage that they offer.

After I find a way to export all my media, I will close down my Proton account. This is not the way of doing business. In the best I managed to easily download all my media from Google Photos and iCloud. I regret leaving iCloud and at this point, just invest the money in self-hosting solution.

Never Proton Again

(Obligatory self post.) I normally don't care enough to share my content but thought this post i wrote the other week would be of interest to this community.

Tldr from the conclusion:

  • the messages sent to Lumo need to be able to be temporarily decrypted for Lumo to process them.
  • Lumo’s response is generated as unencrypted text prior to be encrypted and sent back to you.
  • portions of the conversation context (previous messages) get resent with each interaction.

Since my university uses DPI to ban any website even remotely related to games, I used to use the Stealth protocol of Proton VPN to connect to them in the past.

The thing is that it's stopped working recently but only on desktop, I can still connect fine on mobile when I'm on college WiFi... So what do I infer from this? Is this a bug from Proton's side or did my college figure out how to ban stealth protocol as well? But if that was the case, I shouldn't have been able to connect on mobile either, right?

Should I try contacting Proton support regarding this?

Everyone knows that the content of the notification is encrypted, BUT THIS IS NOT ENOUGH:

https://www.privacy-handbuch.de/handbuch_73.htm

Requests to the PM Team (for example, for the implementation of Unified Push) have been ignored for many years.

For some people, using a safe ProtonMail app with a dangerous FCM can be a disaster in some countries (journalists, signals, political opposition, etc.)

Please repair it!

Systemprompts in Lumo (lumo.proton.me)
submitted 1 month ago by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

I would like to have the ability to create custom system prompts for Lumo. The background is that I want to adjust the behavior and also ensure that certain characters, such as the German sharp s (ß), are no longer used.

Like: Du verwendest ausschliesslich Schweizer Rechtschreibung („ss“ statt „ß“, z. B. „Strasse“, „dass“, „Fuss“).

Lumo gives you the power to solve problems big and small, while keeping your personal data confidential. Try it now.

Less interested in the AI thing, more interested in this bit nested at the bottom of the page: (h/t Jonah Aragon)

Because of legal uncertainty around Swiss government proposals to introduce mass surveillance — proposals that have been outlawed in the EU — Proton is moving most of its physical infrastructure out of Switzerland. Lumo will be the first product to move.

Not meaning to be (too) snide by posting this here, but maybe now Proton could give Linux users a little more love and attention?
