For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, first up is Riders of Justice (2020), an action-comedy about a group of Danish dudes who become convinced that a train crash was the fault of some secret bad guys, and they go on a roaring rampage of revenge together. Unfortunately for them, they are new to this whole action-hero thing, and make many bumbling errors along the way. What if living out your own action-movie fantasy was a form of therapy? This movie aims to show just that. This is the best-known and best-regarded work of director Anders Thomas Jensen to date.

After that is The Princess Diaries (2001), the story of a frumpy teenage girl (Anne Hathaway) who unexpectedly finds herself the heir to a fictional European monarchy, and her subsequent training to become the perfect class enemy. Will she succeed, or will she go back to being a normal girl? The suspense is killing me. Director Garry Marshall is better known for the Julia Roberts vehicle Pretty Woman (1990). Letterboxd loves this movie, so let’s give it a whirl.

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Blorptube, right here:

I was absent the last two nights, but things are back to normal now; I will be there tonight. For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is I Vitelloni (1953), a comedic farce from one of the most renowned directors of all time, Federico Fellini, whose Amarcord (1973) we previously watched. The title translates to “Slackers” or “Layabouts”, since it centers around five young men in a small Italian village who want to do anything but put their nose to the grindstone as they get up to various mischievous schemes, including philandering, practical jokes, and childish games. This is considered one of Fellini’s best, and one of the best Italian films of the 1950s, so let’s give it a whirl.

After that is Tombstone (1993), a western recounting the events of the 1881 shootout at the OK Corral in Tombstone, Arizona. Kurt Russell stars as Wyatt Earp, alongside Val Kilmer, Sam Elliott, and Bill Paxton, as they proceed to bring down the arm of the law on a band of bad guys haunting the town. Dudes are gonna rock. Director is George P. Cosmatos, the guy behind, uhh, Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985) and Cobra (1986). This is by far his best-regarded film, and was a box-office hit.

BONUS: Comrade @[email protected] will be showing Ingmar Bergman’s The Seventh Seal (1957) after the two films above. A knight plays chess with Death. It’s considered one of the all-time classics of cinema.

For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, first up is Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (1985), the sequel to Mobile Suit Gundam (1979), and the series that made Gundam into a national phenomenon. Expect a whole lot of robots fighting each other and war melodrama resulting thereof, as a task force assigned to clean up the remnants of an evil empire turns evil itself. Still considered one of the best Gundam series of them all. Episodes 1 through 6 tonight.

After that is Raggedy Ann & Andy: A Musical Adventure (1976), a surrealist feature from renowned auteur animator Richard Willians, the guy best-known for The Thief and the Cobbler (1992). This was the only feature-length work completed and released during Wiliams’ lifetime in a form that he intended. Accordingly, it has seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years, owing to its bizarre, yet fluid animation, structured around a threadbare plot that sees the eponymous living dolls rescuing a kidnapped toy from a pirate captain. Great reviews for this, so let’s check it out.

For this Friday Movie Night, first up is Aquarius (2016), a Brazilian drama about a sixty-something woman who becomes the last bastion in an old apartment building targeted for demolition by some ruthless landlords. She does everything in her power to maintain her tenants’ rights and derail the development plans as moneyed interests try just as hard to force her out. This is considered one of the best Brazilian films of the 2010s, and arguably the magnum opus of director Kleber Mendonca Filho. We previously watched his anti-Anglo acid-western Bacurau (2019).

After that is Living in Oblivion (1995), a wacky movie-marking comedy about a beleaguered indie director (Steve Buscemi) desperately trying to keep his production from going off the rails, in the face of about a million different obstacles, including prima donnas, bad food, insufferable crew members, and more. This is the best-known and best-regarded work of director Tom DiCillo. Great reviews for this, so let’s check it out.

For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, first up is Nostalgia (1983), a Soviet/Italian psychological drama from one of the USSR’s most renowned filmmakers, Andrei Tarkovsky. A Russian poet goes to Italy to research the life of an 18th-century composer, and things get strange and meditative from there, as he meets a man who insists that he knows how to save the world. Journeys into the mind follow, in Tarkovsky’s usual meditative style. This is considered one of the best Soviet films of all time, being currently ranked #173 on the Letterboxd Top 250.

After that is Superman (2025), the newest cape film from DC Studios, and the beginning of a new cinematic universe, this time helmed by Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) director James Gunn. Superman clashes with Lex Luthor once again as his archnemesis (and some superpowered henchmen) tries to orchestrate a war overseas. You know what to expect. A camrip has just appeared, and its quality looks acceptable. Reviews are good and it has a high score on Letterboxd, so let’s give it a whirl.

For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, first up is Kill Boksoon (2023), a Korean action-thriller about a typical middle-class mom, who Is secretly one of the world’s most effective assassins, having achieved a 100% success rate on her targets. Her boss gives her a particularly difficult job that puts her responsibilities at work and home in conflict. Can moms still rock? I guess we’ll find out. It is the best-known work to date of director Byun Sung-hyun, who does not have any other major hits to his name.

After that is Bee Movie (2007), a Dreamworks animation about Jerry Seinfled as a bee who decides to sue humanity to protest the exploitation of his species. You may better know this film as the sources of many ironic memes, playing on the absurdity of the film’s existence, in which it represents a whole category of pop-cultural detritus. Let’s check it out. Directors Simon J. Smith and Steve Hickner also helmed The Prince of Egypt (1998) and, uhh, Penguins of Madagascar (2014).

I was absent the last two nights, but things are back to normal now; I will be there tonight. For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is Le Deuxieme Souffle (“Second Breath”), a crime thriller from renowned French auteur Jean-Pierre Melville, the guy behind Le Cercle Rouge (1970) and Army of Shadows (1969), both of which we previously watched. A gangster breaks out of prison and goes to Paris to join his buds and continue his gang stuff. He wants to leave the country, but he needs some money, and so, he finds himself roped into one last job. Uh-oh, a police inspector is on his tail. Will he get away? I guess we’ll find out. This is considered one of Melville’s best films, and one of the highlights of French New Wave cinema.

After that is Best in Show (2000), a mockumentary comedy directed by Christopher Guest, the writer of this This Is Spinal Tap (1984), to which this movie bears many similarities. Unlike its predecessor, though, this one focuses on the wacky world of dog shows. A lot of crude and slapstick antics ensue as the film showcases each of the competition’s canine contestants, along with their eccentric owners. Great reviews for this one, so let’s check it out.

For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, we are finishing the classic Gainax series Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water (1990), covering the final episodes, 37 through 39. Join a rag-tag group of unlikely heroes on a steampunk adventure to find and save the lost city of Atlantis from an diabolical organization determined to rule the world. Stargate (1994) and Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001) pretty much ripped this series off. Oh yeah, and did I mention that Hayao Miyazaki wrote it, and Hideaki Anno was involved, too?

After that is Nadia: The Secret of the Blue Water: The Motion Picture (1991), the theatrical follow-up to the TV series, with neither Hideaki Anno nor Hayao Miyazaki being involved. Is it good anyway? I guess we’ll find out.

Last is KPop Demon Hunters (2011), an English-language CG-animated action feature about a trio of K-pop idols who take up demon hunting to protect their fans. They have to protect their secret identities while also fulfilling their obligations as world-travelling musical superstars. Chicks are gonna rock. Director Chris Appelhans previously did the Aladdin ripoff Wish Dragon (2021), which we have not watched. Good reviews for this, so let’s give it a shot.

For this Friday Movie Night, first up is A City of Sadness (1989), a Taiwanese drama following the saga of a family embroiled in Kuomintang’s White Terror in Taiwan in the late 1940s, amidst the Communist victory on the mainland. The story stretches across a few decades as the fash splinter them apart for their suspected treachery. Director is Hou Hsiao-hsien, who is otherwise best-known for the coming-of-age drama The Time to Live and the Time to Die (1985), which we have not yet watched. This is considered one of the best Taiwanese films of all time, so let’s check it out.

After that is Sexy Beast (2000), a British comedy about a gangster (Ray Winstone) who has retired to Spain, only for another gangster (played by Ben Kingsley) to show up at his doorstep and pressure him to come back to London for another big score. Hilarity ensues as Kingsley’s character causes havoc with his violent and temperamental personality. Director is Jonathan Glazer, the guy behind The Zone of Interest (2023) and Under the Skin (2013), both of which we previously watched, and with which this film has little in common, other than being well-reviewed.

For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, first up is Christiane F. (1981), a German teen drama about a teenage girl who starts clubbing in Berlin in the 70s, and begins a romance with a handsome, charming guy. That would all be fine and good, except that she also gets into heroin on the side. I’m sure this will go well. Apparently, this movie is one of the most commonly-shown films in German schools, which makes me curious. Generally compared to stuff like Trainspotting (1996) and Requiem for a Dream (2000). This is the best-known and best-regarded work of director Uli Edel.

After that is Four Lions (2010), a British satirical comedy about a quartet of jihadists who plot an attack against the West, only to be pulled apart by their conflicting ideologies, particularly in the conflict between their fundamentalist understanding of Islam and their consumerist mindset toward Western pop culture. Apparently right-wingers didn’t like this film because it “glorifies terrorists”, which is a better endorsement than the reviews, which are great. This is the only notable feature film to date of director Chris Morris, who has otherwise been active in TV and radio.

For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, first up is 13 Assassins (2010), an Edo-period samurai action film from the master of gore himself, Takashi Miike, whose Ichi the Killer (2001) and The Happiness of the Katakuris (2005) we have previous watched. It is a remake the 1963 film of the same name, which we have not watched, and unlike most remakes, the reviews are better than those of the original. In 1844, a bunch of samurai decide to band together to kill an evil lord who has his eye on the shogun’s position; dudes will to have to rock to keep him from attaining even more power. A whole lot of stabbing and bloodshed ensue. Great reviews for this, so let’s give it a whirl.

After that is Freaky Friday (2003), a remake of the 1976 Disney family comedy of the same name. Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan star as a mom and daughter who wake up one morning to find themselves inhabiting each other’s bodies. Hilarity ensues as they try to fill each other’s roles, and each gains a deeper understanding of the other’s struggles. Director Mark Waters is best-known for Mean Girls (2004), though this film is well-regarded, too. This movie is really popular on Letterboxd.

I was absent the last two nights, but things are back to normal now; I will be there tonight. For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is State of Siege (1972), a French-language thriller from renowned Greek auteur Costa-Gavras about the US-backed regime in Uruguay’s fashy crackdown on the communist guerrilla rebels. The insurgents capture a Usian torture specialist and give him some of his own medicine, their interrogation forming the frame by which they recount the history of the struggle against the Uruguayan regime. We previously watched Gavras’ similar Z (1969), which centered on Greek fascism. This is considered one of his best films, so let’s check it out.

After that is Local Hero (1983), a British satirical comedy about an American businessman (Burt Lancaster) sent by an oil billionaire to buy up a refinery in a remote Scottish village. He finds it full of strange characters who will not let him negotiate the terms how he wants, and seem interested in almost anything else. Hilarity ensues. Oh yeah, and a young Peter Capaldi is there too. Director is Bill Forsyth, who is otherwise best-known for the similarly offbeat Housekeeping (1987), which we have not yet watched. Great reviews for this one.
