For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, first up is Heretic (2024), a horror film that asks, “What if Hugh Grant was a sicko?”, and runs with that premise. Two Mormon missionary ladies go door-to-door, only to knock at the wrong house, when a deranged maniac (Grant) locks them inside his torture chamber of a house, in which he subjects them to sadistic Jigsaw-esque games to test their faith. Will no one stop this madman’s schemes? I guess we’ll find out. This is the most popular and best-reviewed work to date of director due Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, who are otherwise known for the failed Adam Driver vehicle 65 (2023). This is really popular on Letterboxd, so let’s give it a whirl.

Between the features is Alice in Wonderland (1981), a 30-minute animated Soviet adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s classic novel. Looks pretty surreal and cool, and there’s a sequel to it, the two cartoons being collectively the magnum opus of animator Yefrem Pruzhanskyi.

After that is OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies (2006), a French spy farce set in 1955 and starring an off-brand James Bond (played by Jean Dujardin) in his slapstick-filled adventures in fighting Nazis and bedding attractive ladies. Matters come to a head as the spy bumbles his way through international intrigue amidst the Suez Crisis, and the subsequent tensions between France and Egypt. Director is Michel Hazanavicius, the guy better-known for the Best Picture Oscar winner The Artist (2011). French people really like this movie, and ti received great reviews so we’ll give it a shot. Apparently it’s a big piss-take/homage to the classic Bond movies.

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Blorptube, right here:

Be there, comrades!

For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is Falling in Love Like in Movies (2023), an Indonesian romantic comedy about a screenwriter who meets up with an old high-school flame, only to find himself falling for her. He writes a movie inspired by their meeting, apparently hoping it can help him work through his real-life infatuation, but uh-oh, turns out the real woman just lost her husband and isn’t that interested in another relationship. Will love blossom anyway? I guess we’ll find out. Apparently, some humor will be involved, too. Director Yandy Laurens also did the time-loop romance Sore: A Wife from the Future (2025), which we have not yet watched. This is currently the highest-rated Indonesian film of all time on Letterboxd, so let’s check it out.

After that is Uptight (1968), a thriller about black revolutionaries anticipating a race war in the wake of the Martin Luther King assassination and the ensuing riots. They stock up on as many weapons as they can, only to discover that, uh oh, a mole in in their midst, and the cops are now closing in on them. Who has betrayed the cause and sold out to The Man? Time for snitches to get some stitches. The film is an adaptation of Liam O’Flaherty’s 1925 Irish novel The Informer. Director Jules Dassin also helmed Rififi (1955) and Night and the City (1950), both of which we previously watched. This is considered one of his best films.

BONUS: We will begin the night with Shapoklyak (1974), a 19-minute Soviet stop-motion animation, and the third entry in the Cheburashka series, about the proto-Pokemon of the same name.

Sorry, no Gurren Lagann tonight; it will return next week. Also, I will be absent for at least part of the night, though I expect to show up later (and I expect to be present for tomorrow’s films as usual.) I will make it up to you by leaving a pair of Ghibli films that were never shown on the ‘tube. Someone will have to queue them up for me at 8PM EST, though.

First up is Pom Poko (1994), an environmental tale about the plight of tanuki (Japanese raccoon-dogs) amidst the encroachment of humans upon their habitat. They have to use all the magical abilities at their disposal to prevent their homes from being transformed into a concrete hellscape. Director Isao Takahata also helmed other Ghibli classics, such as Grave of the Fireflies (1988) and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (2013). This is more light-hearted than those, though still with a serious message. Also, the raccoons have really big balls.

After that is Howl’s Moving Castle (2004), one of the most acclaimed works of the master himself, Hayao Miyazaki. In a steampunk fantasy world, a girl becomes infatuated with Howl, a wizard bird-man; an evil witch does not like the prospect of this relationship, so she turns the girl into an old woman. Now, she must find a way to return to her true form, as Howl wages a war against an enemy threatening to invade the country. Currently ranked #106 on the Letterboxd Top 250

Friday Movie Night, 8PM EST: British zombie apocalypses 28 Days Later (2002) and 28 Weeks Later (2007)! (CWs inside)

IMPORTANT NOTE: please use a VPN whenever visiting Blorptube, or anywhere else on the internet, for that matter. Protect your privacy.

For this Friday Movie Night, prepare for a double dose of British zombie apocalypses, with a back-to-back showing of 28 Days Later (2002) and its first sequel, 28 Weeks Later (2007). The first film sees a man (Cillian Murphy) wake up from a coma, only to discover that Britain has collapsed into zombie-inflicted mayhem, with small bands of survivors doing anything they can to persist amidst the fleshy abominations roaming the land. These films led to a wave of imitators, pretty much launching a new era of zombie stories across every medium imaginable. Danny Boyle directed the first film; he is otherwise best-known for Trainspotting (1996) and Slumdog Millionaire (2008). Juan Carlos Fresnadillo helmed the second film, and he hasn’t done much else of note. Two more installments have been released in the past year, and they will soon be shown, but we should probably show the first two films before then.

By the way, the first film was shot natively with a 480p digital camera, and even the Blu-ray is 480p, so that is why it has a low-res look.

I will be absent for part of the night, though I should arrive later on. Someone else please queue up the films on the ‘tube at 8PM EST.

For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, first up is Kaithi (2019), an Indian action-thriller about a man who has just been released from prison, excited to finaly visit his daughter for the first time. Uh-oh, his release just so happens to coincide with a huge clash between drug-busters and a powerful gang, and he finds himself caught in the crossfire. He is soon forced by the powers-that-be to cooperate with the law if he ever wants to see his daughter again. Tension escalates from there as he tries to avoid dying. It has received rave reviews all around, being frequently compared to Die Hard (1988), and Is one of the highest-rated Indian films on Letterboxd. Director Lokesh Kanagaraj specializes in gritty action films like this, such as Coolie (2025) and Vikram (2022), neither of which we have yet watched. This is his best-reviewed film to date.

After that is Thunder Road (2018), a black comedy about a divorced cop (Jim Cummings) who goes on a feature-length meltdown after the stresses of his personal and professional career finally crack him. Will no one give this man the help he needs to get his life on track? We’ll have to watch to find out, but we can expect a whole lot of over-the-top antics along the way as he takes his frustrations out in any way he can. “Cringe comedy” and “sad comedy” are frequent descriptors in the film’s reviews, which are excellent. Jim Cumming also directs; he also helmed the werewolf horror The Wolf of Snow Hollow (2020), which we have not yet watched, though this is his best-received film so far.

For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, first up is The Adventures of Buratino (1976), a Soviet children’s fantasy that can be considered the communist answer to Pinocchio. A sentient wooden boy seeking to rescue his fellow puppets from the clutches of the evil theatre landlord Karabas-Barabas, seeking out a magic golden key that will allow him to open a portal and escape with them in tow. He meets a whole bunch of strange characters along the way. This is by far the best-known and best-regarded work of director Leonid Nechayev. A whole generation of Russians consider this a childhood classic, so we’ll give it a whirl. Great reviews all around.

After that is Ready or Not (2019), an action/black-comedy about a newlywed bride who is forced into a deadly game of hide-and-seek by her sinister, wealthy, devil-worshipping in-laws, who have decided she must die to mollify a family curse. A chase ensues as they all attempt to kill her, and she learns to be a badass and turn the tables on them. Over-the-top bloodshed follows from there Director duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett were also behind Scream (2022) and Scream VI (2023). This one is really popular on Letterboxd, so let’s check it out.

For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is One Million Yen Girl (2008), a Japanese drama about a 21-year-old woman who has just been released from prison for petty crimes, and cannot stand that she is ostracized from the community around her. She decided to save up one million yesn, and then move somewhere new, save up another million, and repeat the process, and so on. Will she be able to escape her past and begin with a clean slate, or will her criminal past constantly haunt her? We’ll just have to watch it, I guess. This is the most popular and most-acclaimed work to date of director Yuki Tanada. Great reviews all around.

After that is Lenny (1974), a biopic about legendary 1960s stand-up comic Lenny Bruce (Dustin Hoffman) and his groundbreakingly crude and acerbic routine. He may have been funny on stage, but what about the chaos behind the scenes? Turns out he was also a drunken mess. Director is Bob Fosse, whole films Cabaret (1972) and All That Jazz (1979) we previously watched. This was nominated for the Best Picture Oscar in 1974, and Hoffman for Best Actor. Great reviews for this, so let’s check it out.

For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, first up is Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (2007), a Gainax series about a dystopian future in which evil nobles have forced the masses underground with the help of giant superpowered robots. A couple of underground laborers manage to escape to the surface and quickly begin fighting against the evil machines oppressing humanity. Expect the usual anime antics from there, with characters shooting beams and glowing to solve the plot and such. Episodes 7 through 12 tonight.

After that is Invention for Destruction (1958), AKA The Fabulous World of Jules Verne. It is a live-action/animation hybrid about a steampunk world in which a professor is kidnapped and forced to develop a destructive super-weapon on behalf of a megalomaniac. He meets a young man and woman, also kidnapped by the villain, and they join together to stop the madman’s plans. The production design is the most notable aspect of the film, using and simulating many techniques from early silent films, such as A Trip to the Moon (1902), along with including quite a bit of animation. Director Karel Zeman also did the similarly-styled The Fabulous Baron Munchausen (1962), which we previously watched. Great reviews for this, so let’s check it out.

For this Friday Movie Night, first up is The Secret Agent (2025), a Brazilian political thriller set in 1977, during Brazil’s military dictatorship about a researcher with a violent, who moves from Sao Paolo to Recife to hide from the powers-that-be, who consider him an enemy of the state, and have sent agents and mercenaries after him. This arrangement comes to a head during Carnivale week. Reviews compare this to Promising Young Woman (2020) often. Director Kleber Mendonca Filho previously did Bacurau (2019) and Aquarius (2016), both of which we previously watched. It has been nominated for the Best Picture Oscar this yea, and received ravie reviews. Let’s check it out.

After that is The Long Day Closes (1992), a British LGBT-themed slice of life about an eleven-year-old boy in 1950s Liverpool who is obsessed with movies, and uses them as his refuge from his alienation at school and at home. What could be causing him not to fit in? Could he be gay? I guess we’ll find out. The film progresses in dreamlike, stream-of-consciousness fashion, mixing together the clips and audio from the movies he watches with the events his own life. This is arguably the magnum opus of director Terence Davies, who also did the similar-themed Distant Voices, Still Lives (1988), which we have not yet watched. This is one of the highest-rated British films on Letterboxd.

For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, first up is Train Dreams (2025), based on Denis Johnson’s 2011 novel of the same name. A logger in the early 20th century loses his family in a fire, and lives in isolation in the woods until, years later, he meets a feral woman who lives among the wolves. Will she offer him the chance at redemption for his tormented mind? I guess we’ll find out. This has received several Oscar nominations, including for Best Picture. This is by far the most popular and well-regarded work to date of director Clint Bentley.

After that is Southern Chronicles (2024), a Lithuanian black comedy set in the early 1990s, during the country’s post-Soviet period of austerity. A working-class teenager who cares only about hustling and rugby becomes infatuated with an upper-middle-class girl and starts reading poetry to woo her. Hilarity ensues as he gets up to all sorts of mischief in the bleak economic landscape of the era. This is the only notable work to date of director Ignas Miskinis. For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, first up is Yolo (2024), a comedy about an antisocial, overweight, reclusive woman who finally moves out from her sister’s home at 32 years old to take up boxing, determined to prove her worth once and for all. Can she go the distance? I guess we’ll find out. This was a huge hit in China, being currently the 17th-highest-grossing film of all time there. Star Jia Ling is also the director, reportedly losing 100 pounds of fat and gaining 30 pounds of muscle for the role.

After that is Charlie’s Angels (2000), the film remake of the classic 1976-1981 TV series. It follows a trio of butt-kicking lady spies (Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu) who use their martial-arts skills to fight crime. They have go on an international adventure to track down a kidnapped programmer, with the aid of their sidekick Bosley (Bill Murray). Expect a whole lot of punching and kicking of bad guy, explosions, vehicle chases, and the like. Direct McG also made, uhh, Terminator Salvation (2009). This one is popular on Letterboxd, so we’ll give it a shot.

For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is The Burmese Harp (1956), a Japanese WW2 drama about a soldier in Burma who evades Allied capture by disguising himself as a Buddhist monk and going into the mountains to convince Japanese holdouts to surrender. While at first, he just pretends to be a monk, he inhabits the role more and more as he wanders the countryside in search of his countrymen, and copes with the loss of the war. This is considered one of the best films of the 1950s, and arguably the magnum opus of director Kon Ichikawa, whose other WW2 drama, Fires on the Plain (1959), we previously watched.

After that is Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid (1973), a revisionist western from New Hollywood auteur Sam Peckinpah, whose Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974) we previously watched. In 1881 New Mexico, some rich cattle owners hire Pat Garrett to hunt down and kill his former outlaw comrade, Billy the Kid. A pursuit ensues, entailing a whole lot of blood and violence, while the cattle owners put their sinister development plans into operation. Is the Wild West about to be corrupted by capitalism? Yes. This is considered one of Peckinpah’s best films, and a New Hollywood classic, so let’s check it out.
