For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is The Postman (1994), an Italian-language comedy/drama by British director Michael Radford, who is otherwise best-known for 1984 (1984). A shy, uneducated fisherman’s son gets a job as a mailman, only to discover that he has only a single customer: Pablo Neruda, the legendary Chilean poet who, in this timeline, somehow survived the fascist coup in 1973 and hid in exile on a remote Italian island. The protagonist learns poetry from Neruda and uses it to woo a local lady. Light, feel-good antics ensue. This was nominated for several Oscars in 1995, including Best Picture; it is also one of the highest-rated Italian films on Letterboxd, so let’s check it out.

BONUS: Between the features, we will watch Land Without Bread (1933), a surrealist, 30-minute documentary from renowned auteur Luis Bunuel, whose films have appeared numerous times on the ‘tube, including The Exterminating Angel (1962), The Young and the Damned (1950), and The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972), among others. This shows poverty in rural Spain, and the wretched condition of the peasants, including many staged, bizarre events to shock the viewer out of their passive complacency. Considered a classic of documentary filmmaking.

Next is High Sierra (1941), a film-noir crime thriller starring Humphrey Bogart as a career criminal who has just been released from prison. He sees his newfound freedom as an opportunity for his next big score as he sets his eyes on the cash reserves of a fancy resort. While staying there, a dancer (Ida Lupino) falls in love with him joins him on the run; will these lovebirds evade the arm of the law, or are they doomed? Well, this is from the Hays Code era, so you can probably guess. Director Raoul Walsh is otherwise best-known for White Heat (1949) and The Roaring Twenties (1939), that latter of which we previously watched. This is considered one of the better noirs of the 1940s.
