Planned obsolescence is a practice when goods are created with an artificially shorter lifespan in order to not only cut costs, but also force consumers to make repeat purchases. In some cases that practice may even cost MORE to create an intentionally faulty good for the producer.

This also happened with lightbulbs. After ol' Eddie boy made them they used to be made out of thick glass with fat filaments. They lasted too long so they started being made with thinner glass and filaments to break and burn out faster
