Hello users of Hexbear with the upcoming version of lemmy 0.19.4 we will be able to change local communities' federation to local only however it is experimental as they are developing private communities.

In a previous federation discussion, we stated that we would temporarily remove lemm.ee from our allow-list until hexbear communities and users have the means by which to set hexbear communities to not federate out, restricting it to hexbear users. Now that this tool is available, we will refederate with lemm.ee after we complete the update.

Please use this post to discuss federation in general, as well as provide feedback to the hexbear mod and admin team in regard to federation.

Hello users of hexbear the mod team wanted to make this post as the past couple weeks of federation have been quite eventful.

First off, I want to apologize to any hardship, stress, discomfort, alienation, or any negativity users have experienced as a result of federation. I want to especially extend apologies to marginalized comrades and those that have voiced their disapproval, disagreement, or concern about federation.

Second, in every vote based discussion we have had on federation, the votes for federation and votes for federation with large instances have trended to be near-overwhelming majorities. In the spirit of operating the site in accordance with the desires of most users, we have gone with these decisions.

Third, I want to remind everyone that you are able to set your default feed in your user settings. This is an important tool, as setting your feed to Local prevents posts from federated instances from showing on your feed. You may further curate your feed by setting it to Subscribed, and ensuring that you are only subscribed to communities you wish to see posts from. The Subscribed feed allows you to for example unsubscribe from the_dunk_tank while subscribing to all the other hexbear communities, preventing you from seeing federated instance posts as well as the_dunk_tank posts mentioning other federated instances.

We are now federated with two instances with more than 200 daily active users:

lemmy.ml

lemm.ee

Forth, I wish to remind everyone that there is a pinned post in the hexbear community that allows users to nominate a federated instance for defederation, it can be found here: https://hexbear.net/post/277518

In closing, we would like to state that this post is also a space for Hexbear users to comment on how federation has been for them.

As we are in one of those weeks when decades happen on this site, your feedback is crucial to us in deciding the direction of this forum. As such, we ask of you two questions:

  1. What are your thoughts on the Fediverse, and how has your experience changed through federation?

  2. What would you like to be done going forward, in an ideal situation?

Once this feedback is collected, we will sift through the answers to find the most popular measures advocated for, as well as the overtones of the experiences submitted, and plan what is to be done accordingly.

07

Other instance users, if you comment on this thread, you will be banned from hexbear and your comment will be removed.

Greetings gamers and those who wisely abstain,

It has become clear to us that even in the short while we’ve federated, the situation with sh.itholefor.nazis is entirely untenable and we will be defederating immediately. Multiple instances of ableist and homophobic slurs directed at our users, overwhelming litigiousness against even the most innocuous comments by our users, and just a general ethos of reactionary behavior. We’re done and out.

One of the concerns with embracing TC69 thought on site bans with federation is that the user would basically be just hexbear-side hidden and blocked from our comms, free to post reactionary content without the fear of Lenin behind them. That was a silly concern. We will resume our pre-federation policies regarding site bans.

Hello users of Hexbear,

I wanted to make this post to inform you that hexbear will be temporarily changing to requiring an application for new users. This will stay in effect until after the upcoming pictrs version, and the development of additional mod tooling.

After many complaints mods may begin removing Yakub memes as well as any explicit comment asking a user to post hog, the difference is that while "post hog" is allowed with extreme prejudice commenting "show us your tiny penis" is not allowed, removals will be subject to moderator discretion.

In addition, we would like to reiterate that Hexbear is a space for all our comrades, even if you may not understand their experience, please refrain from labeling a fellow user a wrecker or troll. Using conditions as a pejorative is not allowed, please engage in good-faith and remember the human!

Finally I wanted to hear the user's thoughts, opinions, comments, and proposals regarding Hexbear's recent federation with other lemmy instances.

There are two mod based proposals that I wish to open voting on:

  1. Should we add sh.itjust.works to the hexbear.net/instances allow-list
  2. Should we remove lemm.ee from the hexbear.net/instances allow-list

Use dean-frown to vote for removing lemm.ee from the allow-list 11

Use dean-smile to vote for adding sh.itjust.works to the allow-list 111

Use dean-neutral to vote for keeping the allow-list as is (lemm.ee on the list and sh.itjustworks off the list) 60

As always thank you to the moderators and users for making this place amazing!

Votes as of Aliveelectricwire please correct me if my count is wrong.

Due to recent events and the discussion in the Amendments to the Code of Conduct post we are suspending provisional amendments to the Code of Conduct in specific regard to federation. As we continue to find our footing we may discuss this again.

The rule change in [email protected] prohibiting named posts of Admins and Moderators as well as direct links posts will remain for now.

Despite the suspension of the amendments, I encourage everyone to treat other others with good-faith unless they show otherwise, show considerable restraint in instance's meta posts, and abide by meta community post's requests to center discussion on local users.

Reminder that you must follow Hexbear and federated instances codes of conduct and posted sidebar rules for communities.

You may use this post to discuss further if you wish to

On Blahaj and 196 (hexbear.net)
submitted 2 years ago by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

Due to multiple factors, such as unaddressed ableist removals from the /c/196 moderators, defense of chasers, no-quarter rules regarding our users, leakage of good-faith DMs from our admin team, and a general lack of initiative to punish these behaviors, we have come to the conclusion that the 196 community on lemmy.blahaj.zone has made the fediverse an unsafe space for our queer, disabled, neurodivergent, non-western, and other marginalized comrades on this forum, and we will be defederating from lemmy.blahaj.zone until we can be confident that this will not continue to be an issue.

We have attempted to make good-faith parley with both the instance admin and the comm moderators, but we've reached a point which we feel that until these behaviors are addressed by instance administration, we can no longer continue to federate in good-faith while our users are being actively invalidated by a small-but-vocal portion of the forum. Once we are confident that these behaviors have ceased and are unlikely to continue, we are more-than-happy to refederate in the name of queer solidarity.

Thanks for bearing with us :07:

Hi all,

With regards to our recent integration into the Fediverse, it has become evident that specific rules should be outlined regarding our conduct towards it and our place in it. As such, we are making provisional amendments to the Code of Conduct in specific regard to federation as we find our footing and stake our ground as a part of the wider Fediverse ecosystem. The amendments are as such, demarcated within the dividers:

Federation

In regards to the Fediverse, a dual-pronged approach should be assumed:

Local Communities

Conduct remains as previously outlined [in the Hexbear Code of Conduct], except:

  1. Users visiting Hexbear should be given breathing room to inquire in good-faith about topics that seem obvious to well-trodden leftists. Assume good faith in even the most obvious of questions, except in cases where a user is explicitly acting in a combative or unreasonable manner.
  2. Do not ping users from other federated instances with intent to goad or mock.
  3. Do not directly link to comments or posts of other federated instances on public posts with intent to goad or mock.
  4. Disengagement rules, whilst not amended, are thoroughly emphasized regarding visiting users.

Federated Instances

Assume the conduct outlined regarding local communities, as well as:

  1. When in a federated instance, their rules (and their code of conduct) apply.
  2. Allow instances their own space for discussion, if requested implicitly or explicitly. If said discussion regards this site or its users, you are allowed to discuss said discussion within the local purview (meaning, within a Hexbear community), with regards to the rules laid out prior.
  3. Conduct that is deemed untenably toxic to the Fediverse and Hexbear’s standing within it (by discretion of Hexbear moderation) may be subject to reprisal, regardless of whether it is explicitly outlined.

We're thankful to the moderation and admins of the instances federated with us for their patience as we carve out our own little hole within the Fediverse. And to our beautiful posters, thank you for bearing with us in this week where decades happen 07

Up until now our main means of communication outside the site during e.g. downtime has been via our Twitter account. Given melon-musk's innovative destruction of Twitter as a serious or reliable platform, we'll be using a Mastodon account going forward: @[email protected].

If you're on Mastodon already, please give us a follow! And if you're not, you should sign up! https://toots.matapacos.dog is an instance hosted by our very own @[email protected]. See you on Mastodon folks 😎

Current Federation (hexbear.net)
submitted 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

Lemmy.world has slandered Hexbear.net's name by accusing us of being a brigading troll instance, after days of requesting evidence they have provided none. After raising the concern that the largest lemmy instance is slandering and poisoning the well of smaller instances I was told that I was creating drama and that my only recourse is to make a post on hexbear.net, I am also asking the users of hexbear please do not harass lemmy.world or their mods/admins as well as asking hexbear users not to make lemmy.world accounts/delete any lemmy.world accounts you may have due to opsec/privacy concerns

With the cumulative updates Users may show/hide avatars, show/hide scores, show/hide NSFW content, show/hide read posts, show/hide notifications for new posts, block users, block communities, report direct messages, mods can distinguish a comment to sticky it to the top of a post. Users may set their feed in their account settings to determine if the default feed is local (hexbear.net only), subscribed (user subscribed communities only), or all (all posts on unblocked communities on federated instances).

Hello users of Hexbear in the next couple of weeks (exact date will most likely be somewhere around the 5th of August) we will be taking the site down for approximately three hours to update to lemmy 0.18.3 and begin federation., as we prepare for federation we wanted to create a primer for etiquette when engaging in the fediverse.

Please read and respect the rules of the community instance in which you are posting/commenting. Please try to keep the dirtbag lib-dunking to hexbear itself. Do not follow the Chapo Rules of Posting, instead try to engage utilizing informed rhetoric with sources to dismantle western propaganda. Posting the western atrocity propaganda and pig poop balls is hilarious but will pretty quickly get you banned and if enough of us do it defederated. Realize that you are a representative of the hexbear instance when you post on other instances.

Breaking the hexbear code of conduct on other instances will result in mod action here.

Know that your posts, comments, and DMs involving communities/users of other instances are stored on those instances databases, while delete requests are sent there is no guarantee they will be honored, especially if a different platform is involved (mastodon, etc).

In addition, a reminder that you may set your feed or search to local/subscribed/all and block users/communities to have a greater control over what content you have. Local is Hexbear only, subscribed is communities from hexbear and federated instances that you have specifically subscribed to, and All is hexbear + all federated instances. There will be a pinned post in the !hexbear community where you can nominate instances for our allow-list or block-list.

In closing, I want to remind everyone that the moderation policy of Hexbear communities will not change and will be strictly applied to any users from a federated instance. While we are not responsible for moderation policy of remote communities our admins do see reports you make of posts/comments on federated instances, and we are able to remove them, while not actually deleting the post/comment it does hide it so Hexbear users cannot see/interact with it.

Here is the list of instances we will be federating with at the beginning:

Mastodon for Sickos, this is the unofficial mastodon instance. Perfect for microblogging with the ability to send local only toots.

A collection of Marxist communities, for memes, learning, news, discussion, media, or anything you like.

No right-deviationists (patsocs, nazbols, strasserists, duginists, etc).

A community of privacy and FOSS enthusiasts, run by Lemmy’s developers

Rules

No bigotry - including racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, or xenophobia. Code of Conduct.
Be respectful, especially when disagreeing. Everyone should feel welcome here.
No porn.

Restez courtois.
Pas de contenu pornographique ou érotique.
Pas de publicité, pas de spam, pas de troll.

An instance hosting communities for some niche interests and hobbies.

Remember the human on the other side of your screen! Always strive to be respectful and kind to one another.

Rules: https://possumpat.io/post/13059

An instance dedicated to nature and science.

We follow Lemmy’s code of conduct.

Please be respectful to each other.

The main focus of this instance is the natural sciences, and the scope encompasses all of the STEM fields.

a site dedicated to TTRPG discussion, memes, news, etc.

Given that we’re rather small at the moment, there aren’t terribly many instance-wide rules. As of right now, the main rules would be:

Don’t do anything illegal - anything against the law is basically prohibited here. We’d like to keep our instance relatively above board.
Stay on topic for the communities - Stay on topic for the community you’re posting in. Also respect their rules. The rules of which are left up to the mods of said community.
Be kind and respectful - We want this to be a positive place, regardless of a person’s ideals, values, and opinions. Just remember the person on the other side of the screen. Hate speech, name calling, or other rude/derogatory behavior is not generally allowed.
Please respect the rules of and do not harass others in remote or local communities - The fediverse is a wide, wide place. There’s multiple communities in existence that even predate our instance here dedicated to the subject of TTRPGs! Please don’t go into other communities and disrespect their space. You can even subscribe and participate in those communities in addition to ours!

A place for people to discuss Pathfinder and Starfinder tabletop RPGs

Rules:

Be civil, kind, and respectful of others; both asking for and giving advice should be courteous. Treat everyone in the community as if they are your friend.
No bigotry, harassment, or attacking people in the community (including racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, or other abusive behavior).
Keep content PG-13, this community wants to welcome all players and be respectful of those who may not want to be exposed to explicit content.
Keep content related to Paizo products. There is an offtopic community on this server for non-Paizo (Pathfinder or Starfinder) related discussion. Additional communities can be created as the community wishes.
There are specific communities here that are dedicated to art and looking for groups. Please keep those topics to those communities and leave the others for discussion.
Self-promotion is allowed, but please keep it to a minimum of one post per community per week. Promoting of others (i.e. Humble Bundle, Kickstarter, podcasts or youtube channels) is allowed, but within reason. Don’t spam the community with it. If requested, a self-promotion community could be created.
Do not post copyrighted material. We are going to maintain the standards set forth in Paizo’s Community Use Policy.
Do not post pirated material.

This is a statement from the news megathread crew:

First and foremost, this site and the news megathread's user base are not a monolith, and there are frequent discussions about who to support and to what degree. Nonetheless, we nearly universally acknowledge that the West's role in the world, through organizations such as NATO, the IMF, and the World Bank - among many others - are deeply harmful to the billions of people living both inside and outside of their imperial core, both militarily through wars of aggression and coups, and economic means, giving them unpayable loans, imposing austerity, and applying sanctions to keep these countries in permanent debt peonage. These organizations constitute the modern imperial order, with the United States at its heart - we are not fooled by the term "rules-based international order." It is in the Left's interest for these organizations to be demolished. When and how this will occur, and what precisely comes after, is the cause of great debate and discussion on this site, but it is necessary for a better world.

We do not, as a site, have an official line regarding Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and a wide variety of viewpoints are represented in discussions. This includes many users with varying degrees of support for Russia, which some people may find confusing or objectionable. To understand this perspective, it is essential to understand two things: the historical context that led to the invasion, and theoretical concept known as "critical support." Critical support means that we acknowlede and recognize a nation's flaws, and do not uphold it as an example to emulate, yet we believe that the nation's success is in alignment with our goals. While Russia may be a capitalist country, it is still a thorn in the side of the modern imperial order, but on the other hand, whle Russia may be a thorn in the side of the modern imperial order, it is still a capitalist country.

Understanding the war in Ukraine requires understanding that neither history nor the war began in February 2022, the Ukrainian government has been at war with its people since 2014. The Maidan protests started with many legitimate grievances but were heavily backed by western funding and support, especially to the right-wing groups that overtook the movement and accomplished the coup of the Ukrainian government. The people whose democratically elected candidate had just been removed by the western-backed coup were unhappy and many did not recognize the new illegally appointed government as legitimate. This group was especially prevalent in the eastern part of Ukraine and formed the basis of the separatist movement (always referred to as "Russia-backed separatists" in western media). The new government in Kyiv attempted to suppress the separatist movement with its army but the army refused to start shooting their own countrymen. This led the Kyiv government to turn to far-right paramilitaries like Azov, Aidar, C14, Right Sector, and Donbas battalion in order to attack the people of Donbas, these paramilitaries were later folded completely into the Ukrainian military. Crimea was spared this fate as it was annexed by Russia and didn't have to deal with 8 years of war. Multiple ceasefires, including Minsk 2, were brokered by Russia and European nations and signed by the Ukrainian government but were then simply ignored and the shelling of Donbas continued for 8 years. While Kyiv was waging war on its own countrymen with far-right paramilitary groups it was also promoting the far-right within itself. Stepan Bandera, a Nazi collaborator and genocidal murderer, was made into a national hero. His birthday was made into a national holiday and the street near the Babi Yar monument, a monument commemorating the largest Nazi massacre in Ukraine, was renamed in his honor. Far-right people were placed in high positions in the military and police. Politicians ran under the slogan "Military, Language, Faith". Official use of the Russian language was suppressed, despite it being the majority language among eastern Ukrainians. The Ukrainian people still desired peace with Donbas and Zelensky ran as a peace candidate, however after he won he refused or was unable to stop the the shelling of Donbas. In 2022 Russia recognized the Donbas Republics as sovereign states, Ukraine responded by further escalating their artillery attacks on the Donbas Republics, Russia responded with the invasion of Ukraine.

Hexbear is unwaveringly supportive of LGBTQIA+ rights and we unequivocally denounce the reactionary laws enacted in many countries in the anti-Western bloc, including Russia, Iran, and others. It is worth noting that some countries in this bloc are experiencing positive trends towards social progress, such as Cuba and Venezuela, while some countries in the Western bloc have either never supported LGBTQIA+ rights, or are experiencing a backslide. Tragically, some people have the perception that LGBTQIA+ rights are a Western export, ignoring both the bigotry that exists in Western countries, and the long history of LGBTQIA+ people in non-Western countries. The war in Ukraine, however, is not being fought over LGBTQIA+ rights. Neither side upholds these rights, nor will victory or defeat cause them to change their laws. The battle for LGBTQIA+ rights around the world is, as it has always been, really fucking hard, but if we make the mistake of trusting the imperialists to have our back, we will soon find a knife in it.

It's been a long journey since we announced this back in December 2021. Welcome to the new Hexbear!

~~If~~ When you encounter a bug, please report it here. Please give us as much detail as you can (how to reproduce the bug, the platform/browser you're using) so it's easier for us to fix!

Known Issues
:

A list of issues, not exhaustive or in priority order. We're looking into all of these and will be deploying a variety of hotfixes over the next few days/weeks with fixes.

🚨 A lot of these are bugs that exist in upstream Lemmy 🚨

  • On some errors, infinite rotating spinner with no error message

  • Includes resetting password via password reset link

  • Can't navigate away when text is entered

  • Issue logging out if initial pageload was not on homepage

  • Reporting posts does not work in portrait mode on mobile. Temporary workaround: rotate to landscape mode
  • Jerboa broken due to api changes
  • Inline gifs/images are able to render way too big
  • portrait mode for tablet width/aspect ratios probably should not show sidebar, too much wasted space.
  • disabling "Show Read Posts" in user Profile hides featured/pinned posts from the homepage
  • Highlighting then clicking reply to automatically quote includes "undefined" before the quote.
  • Sitewide Featured Post titles turn blue when moused-over, becoming illegible on the blue background
  • comment permalink is too easy to misclick when aiming for upbear or username.
  • Post shown occasionally changes out from under you while browsing, comments remain the same

If you are open to volunteering, we are looking for frontend developers who can help figure out and fix some of these UX issues. If you think you can help, please send Layla a message on Element (@layla:chapo.chat).

None of this is possible without your continued support. If you enjoy the site, please consider donating via our Liberapay or Patreon :hexbear-retro:

Edit: sorry for the second spurt of downtime folks, we are trying to solve the performance issues

MOSTLY kidding. We have spun up our own cytube server so we are no longer beholden to the weirdo CHUD dev that owns cytu.be.

Join us at our (probably permanent unless something bad happens) new website: https://live.hexbear.net/

Movies will now be hosted here: https://live.hexbear.net/c/movies

and music here: https://live.hexbear.net/c/music

We literally spun this up in about 2 days so if there are any issues you run in to please create a thread on /c/feedback or reach out!

Note: You will need to create a new account for this. Neither your cytube login info or Hexbear login info will work for the new site!

In my troglodyte nerdgasmic haze I overlooked the fact that we already have a Friday movie night, therefore, I think it would be best to change the date to the same time on Saturday instead, so people can catch both the Friday movie and Evangelion if need be! However if this is not ideal then we can keep the same date but stream on another cytube server, either works and I'm happy to do both so nobody gets left out (because its literally just clicking ctrl c and v a few times lol)

!!!!! IMPORTANT UPDATE !!!!!

PSA: If you want to watch free anime thats bad and you should not head on over to gogoanime because that would mean that you cuck all those Japanese animation studios who overwork their staff!

Since the vimeo upload limit resets on a weekly basis, I have been able to pirate 7 new Episodes of the original 1995 Neon Genesis Evangelion for public viewing!

However, it seems the last viewing was a bit inconvenient for the majority of users (citizens of the great Satan) since in hindsight youse probably instead had to get up for work/morning fap/etc. etc. Therefore, the new time has changed to one that is hopefully more convenient for everyone.

Please feel free to say if this new time is actually more inconvenient, otherwise, inshallah it will be so.

I'm also open to streaming Episodes 1-3 next week at 11PM Tuesday CST if anybody wants to have a catchup session, so please make it known if anyone wants this too!

Votes are in! Here’s what we decided to subject our psyches to this month!

====================================

6/8- U already missed it

13/8 - "THEY LIVE"(1988) and "COME AND SEE"(1985) Double feature. - Friday the 13th special! Where-in I skip the vote queue because it's the number holiday and it's festive and nobody can stop me from doing it without using more effort than it's worth. (CW - Come and see is a pretty brutal war movie. Lots of gore and hopelessness)

20/8 - Monty Python's "MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL"(1975) and Monties' Python "MONTY PYTHON AND THE LIFE OF BRIAN"(1979) Double feature (feat Monty and his python) - Monty Python

27/8 - "SHREK"((2001)a space odyssey) and "Tank Girl"(1995) Double feature - Because I used the first slot for spooky day and now I have to smoosh the two together. ~~IF YOU HAVE A WORKING LINK OR COPY DM ME. Y'all didn't include the links and now I gotta do effort. >=[~~ nvm, we good.

====================================

Movies play at 08:00 & 20:00 CT every Friday. Music plays all the time. Well… Like half the time. Queue more albums.

DM me for any questions/concerns or if you wanna schedule something. I miss having DJs and really the Friday thing is just momentum, we can do movies whenever. Like, go queue one right now that's fine.

:vote: here

This Special Movie friday is from an Idea we had where the first Friday of each month will be a comm specific movie friday, this month being c/latam.

This Friday we were planning to have a Spanish Language Movie Friday. so Post your favorite publicly posted or pirately hosted movie for Cytube Fridays, some restrictions will be that the movie you nominate must be made in Latam

this Friday its going to be a double Feature so that mean that the 1st and 2nd most voted movies will be the ones we watch

Movies usually play 08:00am & 8:00pm Central Time Cytube is a finicky beast and usually accepts Youtube, Vimeo, Daily Motion, GoogleDrive(requires plug-ins, ez pz)and occasionally others if it feels charitable that day. Here’s the manual

X-post for @thelastaxolotl. Thanks for picking up the slack.

====================================

7/2 - Pink Floyd's The Wall - Back when bands were like "Yeah, I support feature length album videos."

7/9 - White Tiger - A Russian war film about the incomplete defeat of fascism. English subs. CW for gore, cause it's a war film.

7/16 - Godzilla vs Destroya/ Godzilla vs Mothra - DOUBLE FEATURE!

7/23 - Zootopia - :sicko-yes: :bunny-cop: :sicko-flipped:

7/30- Gentleman of Fortune (1971) - One of the people's favorite unlyrical comedies, about good-natured director of the kindergarten who, like two drops, looks like a recidivist who escaped from prison. Criminal investigators decided to use this similarity to search for stolen archeological items.
