Hello users of hexbear the mod team wanted to make this post as the past couple weeks of federation have been quite eventful.

First off, I want to apologize to any hardship, stress, discomfort, alienation, or any negativity users have experienced as a result of federation. I want to especially extend apologies to marginalized comrades and those that have voiced their disapproval, disagreement, or concern about federation.

Second, in every vote based discussion we have had on federation, the votes for federation and votes for federation with large instances have trended to be near-overwhelming majorities. In the spirit of operating the site in accordance with the desires of most users, we have gone with these decisions.

Third, I want to remind everyone that you are able to set your default feed in your user settings. This is an important tool, as setting your feed to Local prevents posts from federated instances from showing on your feed. You may further curate your feed by setting it to Subscribed, and ensuring that you are only subscribed to communities you wish to see posts from. The Subscribed feed allows you to for example unsubscribe from the_dunk_tank while subscribing to all the other hexbear communities, preventing you from seeing federated instance posts as well as the_dunk_tank posts mentioning other federated instances.

We are now federated with two instances with more than 200 daily active users:

lemmy.ml

lemm.ee

Forth, I wish to remind everyone that there is a pinned post in the hexbear community that allows users to nominate a federated instance for defederation, it can be found here: https://hexbear.net/post/277518

In closing, we would like to state that this post is also a space for Hexbear users to comment on how federation has been for them.

As we are in one of those weeks when decades happen on this site, your feedback is crucial to us in deciding the direction of this forum. As such, we ask of you two questions:

  1. What are your thoughts on the Fediverse, and how has your experience changed through federation?

  2. What would you like to be done going forward, in an ideal situation?

Once this feedback is collected, we will sift through the answers to find the most popular measures advocated for, as well as the overtones of the experiences submitted, and plan what is to be done accordingly.

I'm going to repost most of what I said yesterday, along with a bit extra on the end. Sorry, feeling lazy and rather drained on the whole thing.

I'm disappointed.

All we are doing is isolating ourselves from ideological participation, and thus leaving the politically deactivated non-participant libs that are otherwise amenable to hearing our side at the mercy of fascists without opposition.

My position is that time should be allowed to play out to ban fascists and clear house, this is a process that takes time when federating because initially there are a lot of them and they don't all make themselves known at the same time. As time goes on however and more and more get added to the banlist the issue would die down, leaving out the fascists while leaving the non-political libs still capable of hearing what the left has to say.

I've said many times before, I'm not here to create a socialist play house. I want to create socialists. And if this place is just creating an insular distraction for socialists to hide themselves away from capitalism on the internet then it is not something I will support. I get why some people want that, but I don't see it as good for socialism. I have the same negative attitude towards most communes, where people just end up building them for escapism from capitalism, not for influencing society and building real socialism. I don't want a digital commune for escapism. I'm not really sure where I'm at with it right now, but I do feel quite negative and like I'm edging close to leaving, I keep asking what the point of being here is, how it's productive for socialism, and I can't answer that anymore. If I can't answer that, I should be somewhere else - I'd end up going to any spaces that are simply connected to as much as possible where I can do wider influence, but if many of us do that also we just become considerably weakened without the large collective of people that is considerably weakened in strength.

I also think that if I leave hexbear I probably drop lemmy entirely because it just wouldn't be worth starting socialist spaces on the other instances, it would just be too slow and as soon as socialists get wind of hexbear or lemmygrad they'd abandon ship anyway. I'm still doing stuff on stormfront of course(even if I don't want to be there), I guess more of my effort would end up there.

I dunno. I'm not really sure about the matter. I feel very drained and flakey over the systematic isolation the bear has gone through though, through both internal and external forces.

Lastly, I think federation as a tool fundamentally shuts out "outside" voices to the status quo. Functioning as a way not just to marginalise, but to literally cut out marginalised activists if they're ever saying anything that is remotely opposed to the status quo or rocks any boat at all. I think the end point of federation (if reddit dies) is one giant status-quo instance where the status-quo reigns supreme like never before, while every single voice of critique that ever existed on reddit - shitredditsays, gamingcirclejerk, socialist spaces, radical lgbt spaces, etc etc - all get banned, shut down, or defederated if they're individual instances. The best that can be hoped for is that there's a liberal federation and a completely separate socialist federation. Getting this to happen however seems far-fetched if socialists are defederated and can't create new socialists, so my expectation is that there would simply be a liberal federation while the socialists user-churn until death. This of course all assumes that reddit shits the bed enough for the liberal federation to survive. If that doesn't happen both dies, and ironically the lemmyverse being split and gaining the negative reputation it's building because of all the defederation makes that outcome much more likely as every act of defederation is making the entire platform look less and less viable as an alternative to outsiders.
