Kinda meh. I give it another episode to see it it doesn't turn around.
This happens every time this series comes up. People bashing it because of the premiss alone. Doesn't matter how often it gets repeated that the series is actually good.
Absolute stellar first episode. Going in completely blind knowing nothing of it I was blown away. It's probably going to be my favorite this season even with all the stacked shows I'm looking forward to.
My example for a perfect power system comes from a Manga instead of a light novel but I think it will work just fine to explain what I personally would love to see more of in terms of web thought of magic/power systems: In Witch Hat Atelier the magic system works by drawing magic circles with a strict and clearly defined set of rules. The Sigil in the center defines the element (fire, water, earth, etc.). Around it there are modifiers called Keystones that direct the spell's effect, influencing its power, range, and even how it interacts with the environment. Last there is the closing Rin around it that triggers the effect.
The series uses this in a clever way that never feels like a solution just made up by the author for an "in the moment" problem but like a spell that has always been there within the given set of rules as described in the very beginning of the series. A early on example for a great use of ingenuity within the systems constraints is the flight magic. By placing a half of a wind+direction+intended power circle on each side of a mage's soles they can activate the flight spell by closing the circle when they bring their soles together.
The effect is the same as in many, many fantasy series, but the magic lives within a believable set of rules. A set of rules which application has surprised me throughout the series.
They are cute and funny as a (hidden) "character", but fail to convince me as a "power system". It's basically just "whatever you can imagine we can create for you as long as you don't try to cross any arbitrary line we call if any given situation is useful for the plot". As far as power systems go I find them to be extremely boring. I like their snark as a character though so they work for the series as a whole.
See, see? I told you that it's Average Abilities cosplaying as Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle.
What's so frustrating is that I cannot find any info on a second volume.
<Mercedes and the Waning Moon: The Dungeoneering Feats of a Discarded Vampire Aristocrat Volume 2> - Lots of political meneuvering in this one. The author also is rambling and repeating the same things again and again. I think they explained 3 times in this volume that in the vampire society night is like daytime for humans. We've got it the first time. The same goes for the personality of MC's father. Yes, we get it that he is ruthless and calculating. There is no reason to explain it to the reader for the 7th time. Both story and prose are in general very unstructured and random. I don't think the author has much of a plan laid out while writing this. I like MC though and the dungeon master aspect is interesting. I wish there was more of that and less of the random rambling.
<The Mythical Hero's Otherworld Chronicles: Volume 6> - I really dislike this type of writing style where the story is written from a dozen POVs instead of following a main character. I find myself skimming entire chapters here because I cannot find it in me to give a shit about most of the POV characters. And by the time the shocking cliffhanger at the end happens I didn't gave a shit about the supposedly main character either.
I can't think of any right now with the exact same mix of tropes (timid, overpowered, school setting) but there are several with shy but overpowered main characters and a similar general "vibe". "Lacey Longs for Freedom: The Dawn Witch's Low-Key Life after Defeating the Demon King" and "Taking My Reincarnation One Step at a Time: No One Told Me There Would Be Monsters" are the first that come to mind.
Did I spot a wild Rin there?
And now there's a Chiaki.
Aoi with her little sister as well.
And a Nadeshiko to make the main cast set full.
"No, no, no! You see, having a fashionably late hype entry is more important than saving half a dozen of my fellow hunters!"

Hard to top Mother Knows Breast.
I might have become numbed to series titles, but I don't think this one is even in the top 100 of the worst offenders. Some series titles spoil the entire plot instead of just the basic premiss. I still would prefer some more catchy and normal titles though.
