came up with a couple history teachers I know, honestly thought the premise was fine. the goal is getting students to empathize or put themselves in the shoes of the speaker regardless of the communication medium

The fact that all of the comments here are engaging with the premise shows off that it's funny and engaging, imo. Silly sounding & prime to be memed, but "what if [social media] was around in [historical period]" is an online classic.
