Canada needs a domestic social media service. That much is clear. The only question is how in the world it will compete.
I downloaded a Canadian news app after RIF went down, it has the most vile comment section I have ever seen.
Ask yourself who would comment on a news app instead of Reddit. The answers write themselves.

They're typically less tech savvy, older, and trend Conservative. They're also the segment of that demographic that wants to write comments (i.e. they have stronger/more extreme beliefs)
It's likely to be the more extreme rural Conservatives.

The only people we can trust less than industry to handle this is anybody we might elect to government.
I mean... the CBC is doing pretty alright for itself.
It wouldn't and if by some miracle it started to someone would purchase it.
government funding? Canada has a pretty good track record of separating journalism from the government
