i mean it is normal in japan for kids (obviously older than toddlers) to walk to school by themselves though, mostly bc of walkable cities/good public transportation

Common thing really. Scandinavian here, and I think the only time my parents took me to school was my first day in first grade. 2nd day and onwards we were on our own as far as I remember.
