"Make money in your sleep!" they say as they get their money by selling ineffective courses and exploiting poor virtual assistants in the Global South, neither the course buyers or the virtual assistants make money in their sleep.

In the context of capitalism.

Passive income as in dropshipping, shitty digital content, rent and, to a lesser extent, investing (bonds, stocks, etc) is indeed useless to society, is merely grifting other people out of their money. These are nothing more than economic rent

Passive income as in providing a material service, i.e. purified water vending machines that process raw tap water into clean water, are imo decent practices and contribute to improving society.
