California proving once again that there is no amount of boot we won't lick. Not only are we rejecting prop 40 we're voting yes on prop 42 which makes it against the state constitution to go after billionaire wealth at all.

How is California so consistently fooled and just bad at understanding ballot proposals?

Because hundreds of millions of dollars are spent to mislead them

the opposition to prop 40 outspent the support by 250 to 1

Might as well just give up on propositions honestly. Work to abolish them and condemn them at every opportunity as just another way for the bourgeoisie to get their way in the same way their ownership of newspapers gives them more free speech than anyone else.

Simple as that. Because none of the good ones ever come to pass. We're constantly having to fend off craftily worded bad ones and they've passed a lot of awful things via proposition that have locked us into less and less choices and ability to change things for the better.

We seem to have also passed a regressive tax on the lowest earners by raising the sales tax in LA even higher above 10% which hits the working poor much more than millionaires, billionaires, and corporations as well as wealthy homeowners who should be the ones paying for fire services. What the fuck is wrong with the people around me!? I love paying more taxes so the evil defense corporations and homeowning NIMBYs can pay less.

Any faith I had in propositions has been shattered by this, the rejected public banking LA proposition some years ago and so on.

Fuck California. Fuck California liberals. Fuck Democrats. Fuck the proposition system. It cannot work under bourgeois freedom of the press to propagandize and they will just use it time and again to get people to vote to build the jail cell and noose within it into which the proletariat's neck is placed.

Have the California proletariat tried not be fucking knobs? Have they tried not having aspirations of being rich and glamorous like those celebrities on TV they idolize and accepting their class? No.

This state is full of NIMBY rich homeowners fascists sitting terrified of the spread of too many non-whites into their area, tech worker fascists, defense-intelligence-industrial complex employee fascists, and so on.

It's deeply reactionary and I'm furious at anyone pretending otherwise. The material conditions for too many people benefit from fucking over the lowest rungs of society, from the empire's imperialism, from techno-fascism, and from private property forming a cornerstone of self-value and financial stability.

It sucks but we got outspent on 40/42 by like 250-1. With that spending ratio you can convince Americans that’s there’s cheese on the moon. I thought the texts they sent out were especially deceptive too.

Further, we are doing good on all the other props. Voter ID was shot down. The highest income tax bracket rate was made permanent. We kept environmental review protections. $11B in bonds for affordable housing was approved. The state auditor can’t cancel special taxes and special taxes don’t need a supermajority (all based on current ballots in).

I’m not happy about 40/42 but I don’t think it’s all doom. And was dooming just like 12 hours ago.

    I mean not really.

They also passed one giving a bunch of grifters several billion dollars which sucks.

California sucks and I'm tired of people pretending it doesn't.

LA voters shot down DSA LA's public banking proposal some years ago for example. We still have enshrined no property tax raises ever again. We're constantly raising the sales tax which is a regressive way of collecting taxes because it hits the lowest income earners hardest just to fund basic projects that should be funded by taxes on rich property owners, corporations, billionaires, etc.

Voting for 42 in particular has locked us out of possibilities so it's not a temporary set-back it's a permanent lock-out on a possibility which is a pretty big defeat.

California sucks. California Dems are fucking fascists who like to be pleasant and thought of as better than those mid-western hicks and that's it. They voted to keep the status quo, not to improve anything meaningfully which is the same thing they always do.

I don’t entirely disagree. I look at what’s happening in my hometown / state in the Midwest and wonder if I wouldn’t be better off moving back there. I feel like California kinda fits how Marx viewed France, as a place of extremes. In many ways the left energy here is awesome, and we also have the most brutal tech capitalists and “homeowners”.

Fair. The rise of left politics right now is undeniable and bloomer but I'm still bummed about the misses.

Me too for sure. I wasn’t even too worked up over 40 because it was one-time but 42 sucks haaaard. I think I had just made my peace with it weeks ago. The pro-42 side was just too well funded and effective with their “taxes bad” message. Literally everyone I knew IRL was falling for it, I saw the writing on the wall.

Yeah. At least people firmly rejected the voter ID one. But it's small consolation; the capitalists aren't going to care all that much about voter ID when they can just sprinkle some millions around on election campaigns and guarantee themselves unending political and economic power anyway (as demonstrated by props 40 and 42).
