Parts of a business jet likely started to break off even before it slammed into the ground and erupted in a ball of flames in South Florida, killing all nine people on board, a federal investigator said Monday.

Video recorded by passersby captured the Bahamas-bound Learjet’s rapid nosedive Sunday afternoon before it exploded in Greenacres, about 7 miles (11 kilometers) southwest of West Palm Beach. Flames flickered around chunks of pavement lining the crater as shocked residents looked on in horror. Thick black smoke engulfed the crash site and little remained of the plane.

“Debris was everywhere. Debris hit my house. Everything was on fire. The road was on fire,” Anthony Blackmon, who lives near the crash site, told NBC affiliate WTVJ. “I’ve always seen it on the news, never thought it would happen so close to somebody like how it happened today.”

Yeah, they reported overspeed warnings to ATC and very high descent rates (first 10k, then 20k feet per minute), and they had an extreme vertical speed on adsbexchange of over 32k feet/min (which would be 370 mph or 600 km/h), and then 506 knots (when descent was about 20k ft/min) declining to 241 knots in the horizontal direction. Go fast enough in a dive and a plane will start to break up, like Flight 93 on 9/11 or that recent FlyDubai incident, where the rudder tore off in a dive. While it was too blurry for me to tell—it was moving very quickly—one comment on the dashcam footage of the impact said that looked like the vertical stabilizer or something had come off, and in (Florida governor) DeSantis's press briefing, he said that there was debris spread all over, which is more likely if the plane starts breaking up before it hits the ground.

EDIT: According to this, a Learjet 60 has a maximum speed of 465 knots.
