I don't know how some people stay on [big social media] while constantly hating being on [big social media].

Two men are talking. One says "I hate social media now. Its all ads and ragebait." The second man says "why not the fediverse? Its community ran and not focused on engagement metrics so its..." The first man cuts him off, "Nah, I'm done signing up for any social media. Everything I've been on is just to toxic." Then the man continues to doomscroll on social media.

Most people I talk to pretend like it's too complex. They're upset about a single company controlling their social media, but scared about not having that.

I gave up trying once I realized the large majority of humans today dont know what a filepath is.

I'll retreat to my cave now.

Thank goodness. But shouldnt that be elementary? I was doing that when I was like...6...and there was no internet.

You'd think. But we are admittedly engaging in some boomer ass thinking right now.

  • I don't think so. Tech illiteracy is at an all time high and it affects everyone's life a drastic amount. This isnt driving manual or writing cursive. Its terrifying how bad people are with tech and it allows for corpos to sow more dissent and misinformation and move us to knowledge as a service with fascism.

I mean knowing what something is and using it can be 2 different things. Most people can save things to their computers or make a folder. They just have no reason to know the technical term or how the computer saves it behind the scenes, if you told them they'd likely remember.

Always hated the if someone doesn't know a specialized word in your profession or hobby they're dumb mentality

File path is a specialized term? Ctrl+f is specialized ? This has existed for over 25 years. Its scary people dont know absolute basics.

It'd be something else if it wasnt a thing that encompasses every aspect of our lives 24/7 every single day of our lives. Dont you think people should be knowledgeable about it ? Ive always been of the mind I should be educated about important things like that and have been learning my entire life so I know things that matter.

Its also easier than its ever been. This isnt changing a flat tire or some physical thing people are more scared to learn. This is veeeery easy reading and videos to educate yourself on how a staple aspect of your life functions.

While that is true and important to mention, im also getting reports from teachers saying a lot of the kids, even the older ones, also dont even know of the concept of a file. An image is just an image that can be dragged between apps. A folder is for apps. Everythings an app!

Been some time since i was substitute, so maybe the claims are a bit exaggerated. Could be the commenter was referring to this trend?

it is significantly harder to find the "right" instance if you want to actually see varied content and not just leftyslop and tech.

There is no right instance for that, because the whole fediverse doesnt have that many users, and of those, a great many post that kind of stuff. It's not my cup of tea either (at least not to such a great degree, without a community for most of my hobbies) but I'm OK enough with it to stay for the shitposts and to hope it grows (but not too much!)

With federation, you shouldn't need to consider that, browse, and participate with remote instances freely. Unless what you want to see is largely defederated, in which case, you should probably think about why it's against the social contract of so many instances.
