I genuinely think this is it. You had cynical neoliberals stripping the copper out of the walls under the guise of trickle down economics, racism, etc. Their follower base believed the rhetoric. Now, you mostly have true believer neoliberal politicians being manipulated by the cynical theorists who don't even want to do the "work" of being a neoliberal politician in America, but over time, it will shift to all be dipshit true believers.
