FSD Crashes into California Highway Patrol

A video was posted by the official Facebook page of the California Highway Patrol (CHP), which reports on an October 13, 2026 accident. The video details that CHP Solano officers were responding to a fatal accident that happened on I-80 when a Tesla slammed into the accident scene and into a CHP patrol car with an officer inside. As a result, the already fatal scene nearly added two more fatalities, with both California officers seriously injured after the accident. Thankfully, the officers have already been released, while the Tesla driver sustained only minor injuries.

This all happened despite the fact that the CHP closed four lanes of the Interstate and diverted traffic to a slow lane. Part of CHP's efforts to investigate the scene also included the addition of high-visibility cones and markings, as well as emergency vehicles with lights on. The driver told the CHP that he was asleep behind the wheel with FSD fully engaged, yet the diverted lanes and emergency obstacle lights weren't enough to alert the FSD and wake the sleeping driver, raising more concerns about FSD's true capabilities and safety. There's a footage showing the Tesla driving into the scene of the accident at highway speeds.

Self driving actually becomes trivial if you put the cars on rails so they can only follow fixed routes. You could even electrify the rail or use overhead wires to supply electricity, which would make expensive batteries unnecessary. Then you just need to pre-plan the schedule and keep them away from unpredictable human-used roads so that they don't need to be in any place at the same time as another car. This can be done with some kind of external signaling system. Finally, you can decrease the number of vehicles by having some greater number of people able to fit in the car at a time. They can share space on the car which is great for meeting new people and for throughput generally, and can get on and off of it at various points along the fixed route. This also avoids the problem that all cars have where highway entrances and exits become a bottleneck when there are too many people alone in their cars.
