I suspect public executions don't have the intended impact of inflicting terror but rather are more likely to radicalise and galvanise family members and friends into swearing revenge when witnessed.

i don't think they're for terror? we did all those gizmos and drugs to make it appear more humane to appease the sensibilities of liberals who crave idealized death but are disgusted by personally witnessing the reality of it.

it's just wrapped around that firing squad is more reliable, has been romanticized in a lot of media, and we're way more desensitized to people getting shot than we were when it was phased out.

The US (and Europe) has a long and shameful history of using public executions for terror, especially to terrorize black people, indigenous people, and women. Not that this particular one is designed to do so but I wouldn't write it off yet.

Firing squads executions in media are almost always presented in a way sympathetic to the person being executed or failing that in a way sympathetic to an executioner who will be portrayed as haunted or traumatized by it.

While I think you are describing a real trend I'm not so sure the average lib is far along enough with the desensitization for this to not backfire.

    Now? sure

3 years from now after a democrat president has normalized public execution by going after "Russian assets"? I don't like those odds
