The disability benefits system is broken. It has not adapted to a world where disability and ill health are more prevalent, and more complex in terms of the variation of impact on people's lives or the support that could help.

Disability often results from medical conditions, and is worsened by challenges accessing health services and social care. It is also exacerbated by the barriers to participation in society and the economy – such as limited access to education, poor quality transport infrastructure, employment discrimination, and inflexible workplaces – that disabled people face.

Over the last 20 years the main policy response, in the face of rising costs, has been to make claiming disability benefits more difficult.

spoiler tags and content warnings [cw]Hexbear CoC
for sensitive content that falls under Hexbear's Code of Conduct. You can find the spoiler tag here:

Alt Text of imageAlt text of image: a screenshot of a comment box and its editing options, with a dark theme, grey and dark grey background with white text. A skinny white arrow points to the "spoiler" option, which is an exclamation point inside of a diamond, and the 13th or second-from-the-last icon in the middle of the photo and at the top of the light grey comment box that reads "Type here to comment..." in white italic font

After clicking it, substitute the second "spoiler" with your content warning and the three underscores ( ___ ) with your sensitive content.

As always, we ask that in order to participate in the weekly megathread, one self-identifies as some form of disabled, which is broadly defined in the community sidebar:

"Disability" is an umbrella term which encompasses physical disabilities, emotional/psychiatric disabilities, neurodivergence, intellectual/developmental disabilities, sensory disabilities, invisible disabilities, and more. You do not have to have an official diagnosis to consider yourself disabled.

Mask up, love one another, and stay alive for one more week.

Lecturerer referred to doing something "normally" and doing it "chinesely"

The Chinese way is using math. The normal way is measuring it. The only East Asian student in my year isnt here, but the oof size is off the charts.

What a disgusting thing to say. I know these types of jokes from high school too.

CW: Racism/SinophobiaOne of my physics teachers once said "Back in the day, we had to use calculators for this. Today, that's what we have the Chinese for".

You know what? I don't want to be reading racist shit.

Thank you Lemmy's spoiler formatting functions, and thank you gingerbrat for putting that in a spoiler!

Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to continue playing Spider Solitaire on my phone and continue processing through my current gender related existential crisis.

    Eugh.

I know this is secondary to the racism, but I also have to mentally adjust each time I see people laughing along with it. Like oh I thought people were cool. But no.

Yeah, the amount of classmates who laughed back then was terrifying. Like, a handful of people looked disgusted but the vast majority just thought it was a really witty/funny comment.

Racism is so normalized, it's astonishing how unfiltered so many people are. (Small mod note, can you please put a spoiler tag around your comment? Thank you sweetie.)

I removed it because the spoiler tag just didn't seem to be working properly for me.

Are you using an app or your internet browser for hexbear? I know the spoiler formatting can be strange sometimes depending on what platform you use it on.

An internet browser. I am terrible with technology anyway though.

No problem, sweetie, I'm not that good with it either. But I went ahead and tried to make a step by step explanation for using spoiler tags. Hope it helps!

Screenshot of the location of the spoiler button. A yellow arrow is pointing up at the button

Once you need a spoiler marking for a content warning, click on the button pointed out in the picture.

Screenshot of the spoiler formatting text.

After clicking the button, the formatting for the spoiler text will appear in the comment text field.

Screenshot of the spoiler formatting text. A red circle is drawn around the second spoiler.

The first thing that needs to be changed is the second "spoiler". This is where the content warning goes.

Screenshot of the spoiler formatting text. A green circle is drawn around the three underscores.

The second thing that needs to be changed are the three underscores. This is where the comment goes that needs to be content warned.

Screenshot of the spoiler formatting text. The second spoiler has been substituted with "CW: Content Warning", underlined in red. The three underscores have been substituted with "A story or sentence that requires a specific content warning", underlined in green.

Once you are finished writing both the content warning and the comment, this is what the comment should look like.

Screenshot of the spoiler formatting text as a finished comment. It reads "CW: Content Warning".

To make sure the formatting is correct, click the preview button beneath the text field. You should be seeing the content warning, but not the comment. When you click CW: Content Warning now, the comment should be visible directly beneath it. If that is the case, the comment is ready to be posted.
