Was 4 any good? I never touched the series past 2.

I played the story up to the boss then never came back to it because it felt like every single system was built by corporate goons who wanted maximum player retention through gambling mechanics and systems to manipulate people instead of fun gameplay.

I didn't come back for any further story releases because I knew it was all gonna be like that going forwards. I play games to have fun not to be manipulated by systems layered on systems layered on more systems all designed solely for the purposes of player manipulation. If I wanted that I would go to a casino instead.

I enjoyed 4 as a mindless grind kind of game. I enjoyed holding a button and letting my minions kill everything so I could get Number Go Up loot and maybe do some of the tempering or whatever to Get Number Higher. I never got into complex builds or anything. I'd just put a podcast or something on and play.

At launch though? Dear god, 3 sucked ass. Legendary droprates were so abysmal that you had meh-rolled yellows going for $5 on the real money auction house. The console version was excellent, though, and I'm glad they backported those changes to PC eventually.

I remember bashing my head against the wall trying to beat the game on Inferno. Belial was an actual nightmare that you absolutely could not get hit on to even think about killing. Attempts would take upwards of 10 minutes. Funny enough the game really got easier after that and finishing up through Act 4 took a fraction of the time Act 2 took (though Diablo was fairly difficult too).

They seriously tuned literally everything at launch to maximize the profits from the RMAH and then toss it aside at a later time in a show of “good will.” It was so blatant even after a couple of nerfs that that was what they were aiming for. Money sucking fucks.

Later on in its existence it became a much more fun game. They did a great job of turning it around years later. Late D3 remains one of my favorite ARPG experiences just because you actually felt megapowerful.
