It goes into the retirement account and is immediately converted to something else that is a hedge against inflation. Typically, some kind of productive asset or proxy thereof, like stocks or real estate.
I get that physically hoarding actual paper currency is dumb. That is not how I read the original post though.
Well okay, if you're not stuffing your mattress, then what does it matter what a certain amount of a currency might have bought in the past? You can't time travel to spend it.
