I've discussed compensation with a couple of coworkers at my current job, and my big takeaway is that they're all really bad a negotiating and self-advocating. I've got coworkers in the same responsibility band doing a much better job than I am and genuinely making ~20% less than me. Because they never counter-offered when they got hired or promoted, just accepted the first number they saw.

A loootttt of people cant afford to risk the friction of accepting a job but being stubborn about pay. Being another week without a paycheck is likely the dofference between homelessness and keeping the lights on

This was me. After I "proved" myself to be a "worthy" employee, the raises came. I also work in an environment where things are still pretty old school though, so take that will a giant grain of salt.
