He probably had an extra decade of experience if he was being paid so much.
I had a friend who was angry and appalled when she found out how much more the older men at her library were being paid than the new college grads. It didn't seem to have occurred to her that they'd been probably working there for 30 years.
Then that's on the company for hiring somebody worse.
If the extra value was having worked at the company for decades and knowing complex and obscure company-specific process details inside and out, that's not possible to hire. It only happens with retention, after decades.
