The impression I get, is that the AI companies have a big list of ISBNs and are likely doing automated search and order of the books wherever they can find them. The obscurity of the orders is likely because these are the hard to find books that they couldn't just order on Amazon.
The idea of scanning every book to create a new library of Alexandria is great, if only it was done with noble aims instead of to train proprietary AI models and destroy the books.

I see your library of Alexandria and raise you the Tower of Babel, which as we all know, came crashing down… I wonder for how long society will let the AI companies build their massive edifices.
Edit: upon checking my bible stories, ‘crashing down’ is not quite the right description of what happened with the Tower, but that’s not really the main point.
Haha I'm sure we can still draw some parallels. Something about trying to build up to be equals with God.
